  1. Good. This gives them flexibility should they need to make a mid-season move to improve the ball club. Enjoy the flexibility while you can. Next year they already owe nearly 60 million just to Lohse, Yo, Ramirez, Gomez, and Braun. Thats without even considering what the other 20 guys on the roster will get, including high priced arby guys like Axford. Forget about retaining Hart or Aoki. Their practice of swiping the credit card and paying only the minimum balance until they have to is going to come back and bite them in a big way next year.
  2. I just hate this organization's approach. The way I see it, they had 2 options coming into this offseason: A) Recognize that the rotation, though potentially talented, was loaded with question marks and that looking for a low-cost signing like Marcum as insurance, realizing that if the rotation performed, the lineup is still good enough to give us a shot at the playoffs. B) Stick with the youth movement, have patience throughout spring training, and see how your young starting pitchers develop. Let them take their lumps this year, trusting what they did in the 2nd half of the season last year. Realize that there are a lot of unknowns and this might be an overall below average team this year. Both of those options seem pretty reasonable to me. I could make a case for one over the other, but I think that most would understand going in either direction. So which did they go with? Neither. They went with the mystery option: C) Feign like you're going to go with the youth movement. Panic when they're still underperforming in spring training and give up your 1st round pick and 33 million to land the biggest fish still out there.
  3. Yeah, I wish the Packers would become a successful franchise like the Brewers. +1. I hardly think that TT needs to "learn something" from Doug Melvin.
  4. Here's the thing: management on this team is consistently reactive. They are almost never proactive. That's why we've had to gut the farm. Back in December, any moron could have told Mark and Melvin, "Hey, you're relying on a rely young crop of starting pitching. They may have some growing pains and struggle in spring training. If you want an insurance policy against this, you could bring back Marcum for $4M, forfeit nothing, and get a younger starter with far better career numbers than Kyle Lohse." Instead, they wait til spring training, watch the young starters struggle, and say, "Hey, we're relying on a rely young crop of starting pitching. It's too late to be proactive on this, our backs are to the wall. So we're going to give in to Scott Boras, forfeit the #17 draft pick for an already weak farm system, and give $33M to a 34 year old starter with a 4.45 career ERA." And that is what happens when you're constantly reacting to what happens, and not planning ahead for what is very likely to happen.
  5. I think they forfeit the slot for that pick anyway, so they're not gaining anything financially either by losing the pick.
  6. But again Lohse is a better pitcher than either of these guys were when we signed them. You are also fooling yourself if you think Wolf didn't work out. I hate that we signed a 34 year old to 3 years, I hate giving up a pick. I don't disagree with those points at all. But at least be honest about the past. Wolf worked out for 2 years, and was a disaster the 3rd. "Worked out" is obviously subjective, but any situation in which you have to release a guy before his contract is up and eat a ton of dead money is hard to grade as a win, IMO.
  7. I feel like Melvin/Mark A is a recovering alcoholic who almost made it through the offseason without a drink, and now just fell off the wagon in a big way. The money doesn't bother me nearly as much as the pick. We've just done so many fatm-depleting moves in the last 5 years.
  8. Well at least Greinke has the balls to say it: It really is about the money. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/love-money-led-greinke-dodgers-article-1.1274256 And here I thought Greinke was "different", a guy who wouldn't sign for a big market and loved Milwaukee enough to maybe give us a discount.
  9. I wanted to hold out hope, but there were some people that immediately jumped on anyone suggesting Narveson would be in the rotation next year saying that there was absolutely no way he could recover from that in time. Question is -- will he even be one of the best 5? Gallardo is the only true lock, but I think Estrada and Fiers are pretty close. So that leaves Peralta, Rogers, and Narveson battling it out for 2 spots, with Thornburg as a real long shot, but maybe a decent shot at a bullpen job. Peralta probably makes it on upside -- they have little reason not to go with the most upside this year. I think Rogers makes the roster either way, but maybe in the bullpen.
  10. I'll pass. Just seems like a poor man's Ishikawa to me, albeit a slightly younger version. I would definitely rather have Gamel as I think he still has more upside. Green too only because he's more versatile and can fill in at 2B or 3B.
  11. Quite honestly, I'm hoping we can avoid the token "30+ year old corner OF/1B veteran" this year. I'd rather stick with the guys coming up through the system for the last spot or two on the bench.
  12. I didn't read it, but I think it's kind of comical if anyone is complaining about us wasting Braun's prime by not trying to win now. In the last 5 years, we've traded for CC Sabathia, Zack Greinke, Shaun Marcum, and tried to trade for Roy Halladay which he denied. I'm pretty sure no team in baseball has "gone for it" every year as much as we have. I for one am glad to see us get back to what brought us out of mediocrity in the first place and start relying on our young talent rather than gutting the farm system. Somewhere along the line, this organization lost patience and that's why we have a lousy farm system right now. I think we started falling into the trap (several times) of thinking we were "one player away", which is the ultimate illusion in professional sports.
  13. What do you honestly expect to get from a utility shortstop? He can hit for power and he can play at least respectable defense. That's good enough for me for a guy off the bench. Green will still make the team, I think. Bianchi was DFA'ed by the Royals just a year ago. It's not like giving up on him would be giving up on some hotshot SS prospect.
  14. Love the signing, but I can't shake the nagging fear that Roenicke is going to turn this into a "platoon" type situation or even have Segura on the bench most of the time.
  15. Is the Overbay signing for sure now? I liked Overbay a lot when he was here, but is it a rule that we absolutely have to have a gritty 30-35+ year old defensively limited "battler" on our team every year?
  16. I'll give it my best shot on predictions: Rotation: Gallardo Fiers Estrada Peralta Rogers Gallardo is obviously a lock, and I think Fiers and Estrada are pretty close. Peralta seems too ready to keep down now. Rogers has no options left, so he'll make the roster -- they've invested too much in him to lose him now, especially in a year that they're relying on so many young players anyway. It seems to me like they want to give Narveson every opportunity to win a spot back, I just can't see him being ready at the beginning of the season. Lineup: Aoki Lucroy Braun Ramirez Weeks Gamel Gomez Segura Not much guesswork here other than the order. Gamel to the bench and Hart in the lineup when he's up. Bullpen: Axford Henderson Badenhop Gorzellanny Gonzalez Kintzler Sanchez I struggled on the last spot between Sanchez and Fautino De Los Santos, but it might be neither one. Both have upside and the back of the bullpen will definitely be decided in Spring Training. I think you can pretty much pencil in the first five, though. Bench: Gonzalez Green Maldanado Schafer Khris Davis Gonzalez and Maldanado are obvious, while I think Green and Schafer are likely. I put Davis in the 5th OF'er spot because I can't see how Prince or Gindl are better options. He would be down, of course, once Hart returns.
  17. Dumb random question here, and I'm assuming it's almost definitely no, but, long-term MLB contracts aren't adjusted for inflation, are they? Take for instance Ryan Braun's contract that he signed in 2011, which will pay him $20M in 2021. If that's a flat rate, it's probably worth more like $17M (just as a complete estimate) in today's dollars. I'm just curious as to whether this is something that agents and GM's discuss in long-term negotiations.
  18. I agree that developing your own relievers is much more cost-effective, but I don't agree that this is a bargain. 5M for a first year arby relief pitcher coming off a very lackluster year?
  19. Narveson has been signed at 1 year/$840K. I would think this is a pretty good indication that they do anticipate him returning. If so, I wonder where he would fit in -- bullpen/rotation?
  20. In 2010 he only faced 88 hitters in 24 innings. I doubt the splits against those 88 hitters were anything more than complete fluke. Of course they will evaluate before they make any determinations on his role, but I would say that based on the last two seasons he seems to be trending towards LOOGY.
  21. His 4 year splits since 2009 show an OPS against around .800 against righties and around .600 against lefties. That's a long enough sample size for me. I'm not saying he should be exclusively limited to one lefty hitter, but I certainly think he's probably the last option I want in the 7th inning with 3 righties coming up.
  22. I think it will stack up like this: Axford - CL Henderson - SU Gonzalez - LOOGY Gorzellany - Middle relief Badenhop - 1 inning/ROOGY Rogers Kintzler Pretty much a completely new pen. All of the new acquisitions should make the team. I think Rogers also winds up in the pen IF he doesn't win a rotation spot. He's out of options and I don't see any way they're going to give up on him now after all this when he's finally started to have some success. Gonzalez should not face righties, and Badenhop should not face lefties except under the rarest of circumstances (no available relievers left in extras, blowout game, etc). I'm giving the last spot to Kintzler simply for lack of a better option coming to mind, but I really have no idea on that one.
  23. Gonzalez should be strictly a LOOGY. Gorzelanny should be a solid middle reliever who can face righties or lefties. Henderson probably projects as the setup man. Badenhop is basically the new Kameron Loe, who will hopefully get a lot less innings against lefties than Loe got, now that we have two lefties in the pen. Rogers is out of options and should wind up in the pen also if he doesn't win a spot in the rotation.
  24. Can we please stop being fooled every time we hear a player is "different" about where he wants to sign? "It's not about the money with Zack, he doesn't want to play in a big market." It's always about the money. It's always about getting top dollar for the top free agents. That's why they go to free agency. It was that way with CC, it was that way with Prince, it was that way with Greinke, and it will be that way with the next top FA to leave Milwaukee.
