  1. I agree with Greinke being re-signed pretty much the difference between rebuilding or contending in the near-future years. Although, I wish we had a little better corps of "young" homegrown position players, that used to be our M.O. I'm forced to desperately root against Brett Lawrie in the hopes of convincing me that the Lawrie for Marcum trade wasn't as awful as I think it was.
  2. On the surface I would think that Wolf would need to have an awfully good year to justify a $10M dollar option, but when you look a little more at it, you're right. If you don't keep him then you have to pay him a $1.5M buyout anyway. So you really have to call the option $8.5M. If he has similar numbers to 2011 then it would be hard to say he's not worth it for one more year. That being said, I hope that we have learned that going into a season with Gallardo and Wolf as our two best starters isn't going to result in a very successful season.
  3. I sent him a few tweets. LOL @ Passan for trying to defend himself by basically saying that a cooler and a rubbermaid container are pretty much the same thing.
  4. Maybe they wouldn't, I really don't know, but... - Hechavarria, by all accounts, is a pretty highly touted SS prospect who is MLB ready. Kind of like our Hardy/Escobar situation. With Yunel signed through 2015, obviously someone has to go. Meanwhile, Toronto doesn't have much in the outfield besides Bautista -- Hart makes them a lot better offensively. - Using WAR, at least, Escobar for Hart is a pretty fair deal, salaries notwithstanding. It's possible that in such a deal, we might have to throw in a prospect to get it done, but if there's a gap, it's minimal. If salary is an issue, we could fairly easily meet them in the middle -- take Hart + Escobar's salary for this year ($14M) and we each pay $7M, next year we each pay $7.5M.
  5. Also, I can't stress enough how much respect I have lost for MLB and Selig. Considering a lawsuit to overturn the appeal result? This process is what you agreed to in the CBA. You come off as a bunch of sore losers because the process didn't turn out in your favor this time. Braun should be suing YOU.
  6. Probably that it would be totally obvious that this was done. Then again, I have no idea how the process works, but I assume that once it's sealed, it's really hard to unseal and re-seal it without it being noticeable. I can't speak for how it is done in MLB, but I administered urinalysis tests in the military. There's a red strip put over the bottle called "tamper-evident tape", but it really proves/disproves nothing. They can be effective against someone who doesn't know what they're doing, but they can be beaten, and I am assuming a courier would be a person who would know how. For the ones we used at least, it was difficult, but possible, to remove one end of the tape to expose the cap, and then re-apply the tape. It's possible that minimal evidence or tearing in the tape might exist, but we also don't know how vigilant the testers in Montreal are inspecting each sample for tampering or if they get complacement in doing so.
  7. I honestly think that the key, for Braun to be cleared in the public eye, is the courier. He (and his son) are the only ones that know. Obviously I want him investigated and prosecuted, but there's a part of me that wonders if there's a potential scenario where he could be offered immunity from prosecution in exchange for full disclosure over exactly what happened to that sample and what, if any, tampering took place. Was it ever left unattended? How was it stored? We need the answers to all of these questions, and if there wasn't any possible tampering, we need scientific explanations of how the sample could have been compromised. To me, this is the only way we'll ever know as much of the truth as possible.
  8. Yeah, I do doubt that we will make a deal even with the nice depth. Aoki is an unknown commodity, so it's unlikely that we'd get a good offer for him. Nyjer probably has the most trade value of the "expendables", but the fact that it was only 1 year and there are some perceived character issues really make it unlikely. In other words, he's worth more to us than he probably is to anyone else. Gomez is the only righthanded one of the bunch, so even if someone wants to pay a little more for his upside, it's doubtful he goes anywhere. Now Hart could possibly bring something back, but that would be a bold move at best. You're not going to trade him for prospects. But what about a top 5-10 SS? How about Corey Hart to Toronto, straight up for Yunel Escobar? #1 - Toronto is a trade partner we're familiar with. #2 - Yunel is reasonably signed for $5M a year through 2015, so it solves our SS problem not just now but for the long haul. #3 - Jays get to finally move their possible SS of the future, Adeiny Hechavarria, into the everyday lineup, and get another big bat in the outfield with Bautista. #4 - We solve our logjam in the outfield, get Schafer on the roster this year too, get another lefty bat in the lineup, get a very solid SS, and get plenty of reps for all of Morgan/Gomez/Aoki. We also get $4M of salary relief this year that Mark A. could either pocket or use on another reliever, etc, and $5M of salary relief for next year. I know it's a risk, but would anyone not do this trade, and if so, why? And do you think it's a trade that Toronto would make?
  9. You'd think they could at least invest in a Blackberry for them? It took me about 30 seconds to look up on Google that there are 3 Fed Ex locations in Milwaukee open until at least 8 pm on Saturday (one til 9 pm) in Milwaukee. The test was reportedly October 1st, the Brewer played a day game at home that day which was over by 4 pm. So we are either to believe that the tester could not complete the tests and get to a FedEx location within a 20 minute driving in a 5 hour window, or the courier either was negligent in believing there were no FedEx locations open at that time or lacked a device held by most 13 year old girls.
  10. Not disagreeing with your general point but where are we getting this that he was tested on a Friday in St. Louis? My understanding is that he was tested Saturday, October 1st in Milwaukee after a game with the D'Backs. Believe me I'd be thrilled beyond belief if it came out of this that this was the result of tampering from a dirty St. Louis courier, but before we look at that angle I'd like to see some sort of link that the test was even there rather than a rumor we took and ran with it.
  11. ...and the explanation for synthetic T being found is what, exactly? We'll see what Braun has to say tomorrow. But if the reports are correct that the only issue was the guy was supposed to ship ASAP and he, instead, unnecessarily delayed it because he though FedEx was closed. IOW, if he had been correct and FedEx had been closed, then Braun would have been suspended...that really doesn't demonstrate that Braun did nothing wrong. And yet again...we also don't know that if it would have been shipped on time that the test wouldn't have come up differently and this whole thing including his reputation being tarnished wouldn't have been avoided altogether. I don't think any of us here can speak intelligently to what happens to a sample and T:E ratios in an uncontrolled environment over several days.
  12. I don't think it's fair to completely write this off on "getting off on a technicality." Braun had passed so many random tests before. Then he gets one that sits in some joe's refrigerator all weekend, and then when it gets to the lab it registered higher testosterone levels than ever before. I don't know the scientific explanation, but does that really sound like a coincidence?
  13. https://twitter.com/#!/Buster_ESPN LOL @ Buster Olney backtracking bigtime.
  14. There's no way that Tom H would put his entire reputation on the line if he didn't know for sure.
  15. Is this official?? MLB Network was getting "conflicting reports" but saying he will be suspended.
  16. Sometimes you can find good deals at Stubhub if you're willing to compromise the quality of the team that they're playing and the day of the week. I got 3 tickets for an April 23rd game, a Monday nighter, in section 116 Row 3 Diamond Box for 48 bucks apiece a few weeks ago, not bad.
  17. If they still haven't rendered a verdict 5 years after Braun retires, how do you think that will sway HOF voters?
  18. Curious as to how we will approach things especially if Braun isn't suspended. Now I really have no idea what we will get from Aoki, that's one tough projection to make right now, but IF he does live up to the high end of possible expectations, what then? Admittedly, if Braun isn't suspended, Aoki probably doesn't get much playing time anyway. We'll have Gomez/Morgan in CF and Aoki probably just spot starting occasionally in CF and maybe once every week or two for Hart. Come to think of it, they could still work Aoki in pretty regularly by putting Hart at first once or twice a week for Gamel. Of course, if Braun is suspended, you still have to figure things out after 50 games. Aoki will surely get plenty of PT under this scenario, and if the OF situation still works well, you've probably got some trade bait on your hands. Morgan was most productive last year, but if Gomez has a hot first couple months, you could really see his trade value go up because of his defensive ability and upside. Or could Aoki even be trade bait under this scenario?
  19. Not saying I want to sign him long-term but I put more stock in his great April to mid-September (and overall career really) than his few postseason starts. I do too, but the October was when it most counted and it was horrific. All I'm saying is that I'm hoping it was just an aberration, and not a sign of how effective he becomes late in the season with an extreme workload over 200 innings.
  20. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcvaYgWc9eY Ah, happier days.
  21. Good move, but Marcum's nightmarish 14.90 postseason ERA makes me want to stay away from any long-term deal at this point.
  22. Yeah, that seems like a lose/lose for both the buying and selling team. The buying team can't get compensation for the rental that they're going to inevitably lose. The selling team loses value on their piece because of the buying team getting no future compensation.
  23. Ever since the new CBA established new arbitration/FA types/compensation awards/etc. for players, I've had a tough time really following it. The old system was pretty straightforward. Offer a Type A arby and he declines and signs elsewhere, you get a sandwich pick and a 1st round pick if he signs with a top 15 team, 2nd round pick if he signs with a bottom 15, unless they already have a higher ranked free agent in which case you got the pick from the next round, etc. Offer a Type B arby and he declines and signs elsewhere, you get a sandwich pick. Now I'm hearing all kinds of different things, like for instance, all Type A's are no longer created equal? Some type A's only bring a sandwich pick? Some type B's bring nothing? And you don't need to necessarily offer arbitration to get a pick anymore, but if you do offer arbitration, you have to be willing to offer a one year deal for the average of the highest 125 paid guys in MLB? (about $13M). Just have a tough time following this, maybe someone could better explain how it works? Maybe using Marcum, for example. Odds are, we won't be willing to offer him $13M for 2013 unless he has an absolute lights out, All-Star, sub 3.00 ERA season. So we don't offer but he stays Type A, do we still get anything, or no?
  24. Not saying that you're statistically wrong, it's just hard to believe from the way last year went that this is true. Looking back I recall being frustrated and disappointed with Greinke last year more than I was thrilled with him.
  25. With the burden of proof on Braun for something like this, I really don't see a difference between "not guilty" and "innocent". In court I get it, a guy can be "not guilty" but not necessarily innocent. He might just be "not guilty" for the simple absence of the proof of guilt. But in Braun's case he had to establish that proof, not MLB.
