  1. I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm not that keen on re-signing Prince. First of all, if we've learned anything the last 3 years, it's that pitching is king. Having Braun and Prince back to back in the lineup hasn't done us an ounce of good if they haven't had the starting pitching to back them up. Also, I don't like dashing people's hopes, but in my opinion, any idea of Prince taking a hometown discount to stay here is unlikely at best, absurd at worst. I haven't seen any indication from Prince the last 6 years that he's going to settle for anything but top dollar, and we're talking about a 6 year contract minimum that has a chance to be a pretty bad deal on the back end of it. Prince isn't going to settle for $18M a year to give us a chance to keep Greinke and Marcum. He's had an outstanding contract year and IMO he fully intends to cash in on it. He wouldn't take $20M a year when we offered it, why on earth would he take it now that he finally made it to free agency? I'm also concerned about a post contract year dropoff. Prince's career path has generally been an MVP caliber year followed by a pretty pedestrian year by his standards. Let him walk, take the draft picks and the savings, and use it to get a decent SS and keep some of the pitching that got us here in the first place. I want no part of a bidding war that ends up with us tying up $25M of our payroll in him each year for the next 6-7 years. Life will go on without him and we can still contend.
  2. Yeah, to me it makes no sense not to swap Morgan and Hart, but while they're winning, nothing is going to change there.
  3. I think you can obviously pencil in the top 3, Greinke/Gallardo/Marcum. I think Narveson is more or less a lock too. Wolf has certainly done nothing not to be the #4 again next year. I look at him a little differently, because if I were the Brewers, depending on what the offseason plan was, I'd consider trading him and dumping the last year of his salary. I am very wary about trusting Wolf next year to repeat this year. If Wolf was gone, Peralta and Estrada may be candidates for the vacancy. Peralta is going to get that shot sooner or later, and Estrada has impressed this entire year as a starter. Still difficult to say if he's a legit MLB starter or if hitters just haven't figured him out yet, but he's been great filling in this year.
  4. Gamel is a pretty big question mark to replace a position of expected big offensive contributions. We could probably afford to bring in Lance Berkman on a 2 year deal and have little or no dropoff at all.
  5. I actually would prefer we offer arby to K-Rod. Normally you don't want to pay that much for a setup man, but it's just going to be a 1 year overpriced deal like Gagne was. The worst case scenario is that we invest about $5M more than we otherwise would in him next year for just one year and have absolutely zero bullpen concerns going into next year. The best case scenario, which I still think is far more likely, is that K-Rod leaves and we get valuable draft picks for our rebuilding farm. His agent is Boras. He has the option to test the market and be one of the top FA closer options on the market. Do you really think he's going to come back on a 1 year deal knowing he's going to be the setup man, (which will hurt his value further after next year), not even seeing what he might get on the market? I doubt it very much.
  6. He will be. Not doing so would be insane. I'm pretty sure there are a few teams that would be willing to take a flyer on a 3rd baseman OPS'ing 1.004 in AAA.
  7. Hard to believe that him and Weeks were considered the 1A and 1B in the same draft. And to think it was at one time thought that WE had the bust.
  8. Okay, I'm lost. At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, what is the point of scalpers carrying around "I need tickets" signs at MP? Are they just trying to buy low/sell high?
  9. Any player who pops up a 3-0 pitch to the catcher should owe a pretty substantial sum of money in kangaroo court.
  10. I don't get you, RR. If your pinch-hitter's sole purpose is to bunt, why do you need to use the pinch-hitter?
  11. With K-Rod not available we are basically running with a 4 man bullpen. Axford, Saito, Hawkins, and Loe. Dillard and De La Cruz are just here for show.
  12. Red-hot Betancourt is gone. It was fun while it lasted.
  13. Not sure what the stats are on the squeeze, but I believe I heard somewhere that your odds of getting a guy in from 3rd with 1 out playing straight up is 57%. So, for the squeeze to be productive, it needs to top that.
  14. Agreed....you have Ax for the 9th, K-Rod for setup, the healthier/fresher of Saito/Hawkins for setup, Loe for a groundball situation, Estrada for long man/garbage time, and Dillard for randomly getting up and stretching. Except for the very rare occasion, there is literally nothing to handle.
  15. Pretty much none. Would have to sweep them in August and then make up 3.5 somewhere else. Possible, but very doubtful. I'd be more than content with hanging onto the division and taking the #2 seed over Arizona/San Francisco for homefield advantage in the first round.
  16. Nope, players have to be on the 25-man roster, the DL, the bereavement list, or the suspended list as of August 31. Not trying to be snarky, this is an honest question: How did David Price debut in September and pitch in the playoffs in 2008? http://www.baseball-refer...eda01.shtml?mobile=false I'm guessing he was a direct replacement for an injured player in September, but that's just a guess.
  17. Not that Marcum is the perfect pitcher, but to leave him out of the playoff rotation...that's a risky move at best by RR. Atlanta has a pretty lefty heavy lineup, though.
  18. Players within the organization on August 31 can be on the playoff roster. It doesn't matter if they're in the minors on that date. A player acquired from another organization after August 31 is ineligible. Really? I thought they had to be on the 25 man or the DL on August 31st to qualify, unless they come up September as an injury replacement.
  19. We only get 25, let's make 'em count. Rotation (3): GreinkeGallardoMarcum Bullpen (8):AxfordK-Rod SaitoHawkins Loe EstradaWolfNarveson Lineup (8):HartMorganBraun PrinceWeeksMcGeheeBetancourtLucroy Bench (6):KottarasGomezCounsellHairstonKotsayWilson The lineup is all locks, I think. Rotation too unless they do something like Wolf for Marcum. You can use Wolf and Narveson as LOOGYs. So I really don't think they need Estrada, I would scratch him for another bench bat, but I don't think they will. They certainly don't need Dillard, though. All the rest in the pen are locks. Gomez, Hairston, and Kottaras I think are as well, need a backup catcher and Gomez' outfield defense late is very valuable. Sadly I think Kotsay and Counsell are as well. Wilson is where I would draw the line, Hairston makes Wilson completely expendable once Weeks returns. I would include Gamel or Green on the playoff roster over Wilson just to have that bench bat, but I'm not sure that Melvin has the guts to make that call.
  20. Could we send Dillard down for a day on August 31st and promote Green? Then just bring Dillard back up the next day? I just would think that would make sense because then his bench bat would be eligible for the playoff roster. In the playoffs you've already got 2 extra bullpen arms because you're generally going with a 3 man rotation. We don't use Dillard now as it is, no way would we have any use for him in October.
  21. I'd love to speculate that Green was pulled last night to be added to the 40 man and then 25 man roster with any of Lopez, Counsell, or Wilson being DFA'ed, but why bother?
  22. I would like to see Green called up before September 1st so he is eligible for postseason play. He would be a far better option to have off the bench than, well, anyone currently on our bench. Unfortunately, because we are winning, we are unlikely to see anything change, though the winning has not been in any way related to bench play. This organization seems to have this odd mentality that anyone with MLB experience is better than a rookie, regardless of numbers. Even if the production proves this to the contrary, they stick with this philosophy. Felipe Lopez was just a completely pointless acquistion. You have Hairston now, so he can fill at 2B easily while Weeks is out, and is a better option every day than Lopez. For extra insurance, you can let Green have Lopez' spot. The sudden love for Felipe Lopez is hard to understand. Here's a guy who wasn't good enough to be on any 25 man roster in baseball a few weeks ago, and suddenly we have decided he is a legitimate every day starting option. I understand you're not going to replace Weeks, but there are better choices.
  23. Two things: -- Ronnie's smallball tendencies have evolved from "tendencies" to "obsessions". Small ball has its place, but good grief, I feel like we're bunting every time we have a runner at 1st and less than 2 out regardless of who is on and who is up. Stop giving up so many outs, it's driving me nuts, it has gotten way beyond predictable. Some days you're going to win or lose based on whether you had that big inning, and Roenicke plays for 1 run every inning, which just isn't a realistic approach. -- Felipe Lopez is bad. There are 30 Major League Baseball teams and 3 weeks ago, not one of them even saw Lopez worthy of a spot on their 25 man roster. He has not turned into an every day starter since then. You've got Green, but since you're pretty determined to keep him in Nashville, you've also got Hairston. Use him.
  24. Can you get those online?
