  1. Hes only going by platoon advantages. I guess JHJ will only play against lefties the rest of the wayThe problem with that logic is A) it's going to give you the worse player in the lineup 70-75% of the time and B) it's not really logical. Neither is really a platoon guy, both have minimal L/R splits. Hairston carries a .704 OPS vs. RHP in his career and better defense, I will take that right now over what I think Lopez can offer.
  2. I'm not quite understanding why RR thinks that Lopez >> Hairston. I never expected Lopez to be playing every day nor did I expect Hairston to just be a bench option. It seems to me that Hairston is a better every day option at 2B. Of course, the disparity isn't great, I might be able to be sold on Lopez being the everyday guy if the logic goes beyond "he's a switch-hitter and he had a couple nice months for us in 2009."
  3. I always buy those instead of the standing room only when going with someone else even though it'll obviously split us up. Then if we can't find an area for both of us together in either of our ticketed sections, we'll stand. It's the same price, at least it was when I went, and what are they going to do, tell me I can't stand and watch if I have a ticketed seat?
  4. I think Roenicke is a solid PR/player guy. He's not going to create controversy in Milwaukee (well, not nationally, anyway), and his players play hard for him, and you can't underestimate the importance of that. (Though you would hope that most professional baseball players choose to play hard at all times regardless of who their leadership is). I've been critical of his bullpen management in the past, and though it's gotten better lately and I feel like I should give him credit, I really can't because the bullpen has been completely dummy-proofed for him. You've got Ax for the save, K-Rod for the hold, Loe for ROOGY/groundball situation, Dillard for mop-up, Estrada for mop-up/long man, and whoever is fresher of Saito and Hawkins for the 7th. There is literally nothing to decide other than how long to keep in a struggling pitcher.
  5. Here's something interesting: CF WAR for 2011: 4.1 (Morgan 2.3, Gomez 1.8) 1B WAR for 2011: 3.7 (Prince) And Prince is having a big year, and CF was seen before the year as one potential major position of weakness. This is why I don't put too much stock into the thinking that we are screwed once Prince leaves. Although 1.8 seems like an awfully inflated WAR for Gomez. I realize he's a defensive stud, but he's had only 209 AB's this year. Is it really possible that in limited time, his defense is so good that it makes him better than an average everyday starter at the position?
  6. Yeah, considering how woeful the bench is, I think we could get more value in having the extra bat on the bench. You can always bring him back up if you need him, and in 4 weeks, it won't matter anyway, you can bring in all the extra bullpen depth you want. Sometimes I forget that he's still on the roster.
  7. Multiple times in the last couple of week, Roenicke has been raving about Counsell's D. Now, Counsell is a nice defensive player, not elite, but good. But it's funny seeing how the the worse he hits, the more Roenicke starts talking about him like he's Ozzie Guillen.
  8. If the situation arises, Pujols needs to take one in the ribs tomorrow. A loss is a loss, but the thing that incenses me the most about this game is the fact that LaRussa stupidly gives us a free leadoff runner in retalation for something that was completely unintentional, stays in the game even though there was obvious intent, and then we load the bases and CAN'T MAKE THEM PAY. That was embarrassing. It felt like watching a criminal up on the stand that you knew was guilty, but the prosecution did a poor job and he got off.
  9. To me this is the worst loss of the season. To be insulted by the Cardinals, to have them show complete lack of class, to continue their crusade to be baseball's biggest hypocrites, and to strand the bases loaded with nobody out and not be able to make them pay, yeah, that stings. I have an extremely hard time believing that 20% of our losses have been worse.
  10. .260/.314/.401/.716 wOBA .312 for Casey going forward. This really should be a no brainer if Green plays better defense. Green however has a condition called lineupwitharookieingitus, which Melvin and Co. believe to magically cause runs to disappear off the board in crunch time in playoff races.
  11. Well, ideally he will not continue getting AB's anyway, since he shouldn't be starting under any circumstances and his bench bat is arguably less valuable than 60% of our rotation. Seriously, if Counsell still has a place on this team, we may as well fill our entire bench with strictly defensive specialists and use Gallardo, Greinke, and Wolf as our pinch-hitters.
  12. He's only 2 AB's away now. Just DFA him now and avoid embarrassing him and the organization.
  13. I agree with those saying not disappointed with the deadline moves, just disappointed with the personnel management in general. I'm disappointed that Melvin and Co. are carrying 4 below-replacement level players, and worse, don't seem to see a problem with it, when there are better options available internally. The talent is on this team at the top, but 20% of our team consist of guys that could probably be DFA'ed tomorrow without anyone batting an eye., (Betancourt, McGehee, Wilson, Counsell, Kotsay) Somewhere along the line, Melvin seemed to buy into the idea that veteran = good, when there are in fact instances where a rookie is better, but the brass seem content to always err on the side of the vet.
  14. No. Only in the Rocky films. I have quite a bit of heart, I'm sure more than many MLB players, but I don't think that makes me qualified to take the low-hearted ones jobs.
  15. Why do I often now hear August 1st as a minimum day they would wait to bring up Green? What is the significance of that day?
  16. How do Wilson and Betancourt get DFA'ed and somehow Counsell sneaks through? If we acquire a competent SS, there will be little need for Counsell as a defensive sub in the late innings. And he certainly has no value as a pinch-hitter anymore, so why even waste the roster spot?
  17. Still waiting on Green. Seriously, we assembled a butcher infield this season and now all of the sudden when Weeks goes down and we have a huge hole at 2nd, we're suddenly desperately concerned about his defense? If not Green then we need a trade. Plugging in the best matchup of Farris/Wilson/Counsell/Lopez every day is not the answer.
  18. Hey at this point, I'm just happy it's a month and not the season. We can tread water for a month without him. It's a big loss, but if you put it in perspective, say that Weeks is a 6 WAR player, losing him for a month, on average, should amount to 1 loss in the standings, and we could make that up with some good deadline moves. (Obviously I'm not saying we're going to be exactly one game down without Rickie as we would have been with him, it could be several, it could be +1 by some freak coincidence, no one will ever know, but it gives you an idea of the kind of impact it should have.)
  19. If you're not going to give Green a chance now, just trade the poor guy already. If he's good enough to compete for the starting 3B position next year, he's damn sure good enough to help us now when we really need him and have a chance to win the division for the first time in 29 years.
  20. Farris is on the 40 man as well and Farris is not. So I have a feeling that will be the convenient excuse.
  21. I can't believe in a pennant chase, with now having a gaping hole at 2nd, that Green's .950+ OPS is going to be held back for Eric Farris' awful stick in the name of saving one of Green's 3 remaining options. If this is the case I have zero faith left in Doug and his ability to do what's best for this team. We already have an entire bench full of Eric Farris quality players. If defense is all that matters at 2nd, you may as well just start Counsell every day and save the roster spot.
  22. Noticed something shocking on Fangraphs relative to McGehee today. http://www.fangraphs.com/...layerid=6086&position=3B Scroll to the bottom, for his defense he is listed currently as 1.8 runs above average, by far his best defensive season as a Brewer? Does Fangraphs know something we don't, or have they been watching a completely different Casey McGehee than the one I've seen this season?
  23. I'm sorry but I believe this is little more than a cliche. Some rookies acclimate to the big leagues just fine, you never know til you find out. I would say that I'd much rather have a capable rookie heading into the playoffs than continue starting a .586 OPS'ing defensive liability 3rd baseman who may prevent you altogether from getting into the playoffs.
  24. Taylor Green (Nashville) - .321, 15 HR, 61 RBI, .954 OPS Casey McGehee (Milwaukee) - .226, 5 HR, 38 RBI, .586 OPS This is getting insane, Taylor is outperforming Casey by almost 400 OPS points right now, and he may not even be the first option for 3B out of Nashville. He could come up and play relatively poorly and drop about 300 points from his AAA OPS and still be outperforming McGehee by a pretty signficant margin. Taylor, I'm sorry. I really don't know what else to say at this point. This feels just like the Nieves/Kottaras situation from earlier this year except for you knew on that one that Melvin would eventually have to cave. It's also different because Nieves only hurt us one out of every 5 days, not every day.
  25. I'd love Barmes, but again don't understand why we're talking about acquiring a starter. I'll take a vast defensive improvement at 3B and SS first.
