  1. The other thing that Kottaras gives us is that late inning power bat which is completely absent from the bench right now.
  2. Kottaras watch: June 9th: 4 for 5, 2B, HR
  3. Well, I doubt at the time he traded Hardy for Gomez that he realized that Greinke was eventually going to be available for a package that included Escobar. But yes, I never liked the Hardy for Gomez trade.
  4. That's actually a logical reason for Nieves to be here, but there's no way I'm going to buy it. I don't believe for a second that Kottaras and Wolf lack some sort of game chemistry (Kottaras was Wolf's primary catcher during his great 2nd half run last year), any more than I believe that a 33 year journeyman backup is some sort of gamecalling guru that instantly improves the performance of any pitcher who pitches to him.
  5. The bullpen is the one area where we actually have some AAA depth that could step in if need be. Bell would also cost an arm and a leg and we're already depleted in the farm. If we're going to give up an arm and a leg, I'd rather get an upgrade where we really need it at SS, rather than a reliever who will probably throw 35 innings for us the rest of the year.
  6. Kottaras isn't very good for his career in throwing out baserunners, about 17%. Still, he started this year 2 for 7, and one thing they mentioned was about how he had worked hard in the offseason to improve that. Wil Nieves is 24% for his careeer in throwing out baserunners. I don't see the difference right now being anything significant at all, and I don't think we'd be in trouble with Kottaras as our starter if Lucroy went down as much as we'd be in trouble overall if Lucroy went down and we were stuck with Nieves as our starter.
  7. Well, if we got a great offer, I think anyone is tradeable. I just don't think that anyone is going to give us more for Hart than he's worth to us, nor do I think there's anyone in our farm that can reasonably replace him anytime soon.
  8. Yeah, Estrada wouldn't be a bad candidate to go down right now. Maybe could move into Nashville's rotation as a backup 6th starter.
  9. Wilson would have to clear waivers. Have to think there's a good chance that he would though, heck, Kottaras cleared.
  10. Hart's contract is actually quite reasonable in relation to his production. I think when you look at the comparable production between him, Werth, and Crawford, and see what kind of money they got versus what we signed Hart for just months prior, I think I'm pretty happy now that we kept him for what we did. He also seems like a guy who genuinely wants to be here playing for the Brewers, which I think does count for something. Hart isn't a special player by any means, but he's a good, solid, everyday starter. I'm not sold on any of our outfield prospects having that kind of a ceiling, so like it was mentioned, I wouldn't let Hart go unless we really got an offer we couldn't refuse.
  11. I'm also a little concerned about Prince's inconsistencies when deciding on a long-term deal. He's alternated between outstanding years (1.013 OPS in 2007, 1.014 OPS in 2009, .995 OPS in 2011), and nice years (.830 OPS in 2006, .879 OPS in 2008, .872 OPS in 2010). The latter are very respectable years, but for a slow, defensively deficient first baseman, not worth the contract that he will command. I don't think it's a coincidence that he's putting up a great 2011 in a contract year, and once he gets that long-term deal, I fully expect him to relax a bit and possibly a down year next season.
  12. Gamel is my first choice. Heck, I'd prefer Kottaras over just trotting Kotsay out there every day. If we are going to go with who we have currently on the roster, I'd get Gomez out there in CF, bat him 9th, and get Braun and Fielder some field days off. You could DH Braun and put Morgan in LF and have a real outstanding outfield. Or you could start Hart at 1st, Morgan in RF, and DH Prince.
  13. The more I think about it, I think we're underestimating what it will take to acquire Hardy, even as a rental. Hardy currently projects as Type A, so the O's will automatically get a 1st or 2nd + a sandwich 1/2 pick if they do nothing. Any offer they accept from us is certainly going to have to top that perceived value, which from our farm system, isn't going to be easy.
  14. I think a pretty good rule of thumb is, when your backup catcher is so bad that you actually remove him/pinch hit for him as you would a pitcher later on in the game, when you've only got one other catcher on your roster, it's probably time for him to go.
  15. Too bad we couldn't sneak him down to AAA for 6 weeks ala JJ Hardy 2009 to buy an extra year. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif He's got 5 years service time now I believe so the veterans consent rule comes into play and he could refuse it. Would have worked last year. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. Fielder would be taking an enormous risk to take another 1 year deal, even at $30M. He's having a big contract year which was exactly what Boras and Prince wanted. It would be unprecedented for him to take a 1 year deal now, especially as a Boras client.
  17. “He’s been our guy,” said Roenicke. “I still have confidence in him. He’s getting some sinkers up in the (strike) zone. They’re not down like they were earlier. “We’ve been pitching great. You’re not going to pitch great all year. I still really like Kameron Loe and I have a ton of confidence in him.” Tell me this is all just manager-speak.
  18. Players don't hire Scott Boras as their agent if they're willing to take a hometown discount. It doesn't matter how close we are, Prince will be going to the highest bidder.
  19. Not all that up to speed on the roid testing but I thought that was already going on well by the time Casey broke into the league with us 2 years ago.
  20. Eh Barmes is alright, if you're satisfied with pretty much strictly a defensive upgrade. I'd certainly prefer a bigger upgrade like Hardy, but I'd do it if there were no other available options if we didn't have to really give up much at all.
  21. Hmm. I just don't see it I guess. If by not hanging his pitchers out to dry you mean he doesn't leave them in longer than he should, I'd have to disagree on a couple counts. As far as the lineups, I guess I'm really not sure what you mean by Yost having "willy-nilly" lineups. Yost had some criticisms, but his lineups were not a very common one. I guess maybe you mean the pitcher batting 8th experiment, but I actually like that he was trying to maximize the production of his lineup. Like I said, I'm starting to warm up to Roenicke's lineups a little more, but he's been far from perfect there. Far too much Kotsay, far too long of a leash for Gomez at #2, McGehee at #5, and just really baffling reasons for keeping Lucroy #8 while he was hot.
  22. I've started to warm up to his lineups. He finally has started to ease up on Casey in the #5 hole. So my biggest complaints right now, bullpen management and the roster. The bullpen, I'm mainly talking about Loe, Roenicke needs to start properly utilizing this guy and stop treating him like a regular 8th inning setup man which he is not. It's also not illegal to bring Axford in with 2 out in the 8th, a concept which I hope RR catches on to. The roster...I'm assuming that his advisement has resulted in the assembly of this bench. Nieves and Kottaras are making Roenicke look awfully bad. If he won't make the move, sooner or later I think Melvin has to step in and intervene, which he has already hinted at. I know we're not going to have studs on the bench, but there have been better players available and passed on to this point. I would prefer to see "talent" higher than "grittiness" in precedence.
  23. I noticed that too. Obviously he's not going to be sitting in the dugout by himself with his arms crossed but Gomez genuinely does not seem bitter. I had my doubts but I think he's a good kid and I hope he still has a nice career as an MLB centerfielder.
  24. Nieves has a video of Roenicke having a tea party with stuffed animals. Its the only explanation that makes any sense as to why Nieves is still here.
  25. What do you mean? Nieves is sitting on a solid .384 OBP. Whoops, nevermind, that's his OPS.
