  1. Well, we're down to a 3 game lead over the Cubs, Sheets just went out with another blister, our starting pitching besides him is next to useless right now, and we're in danger of dropping another series, this one at home to an average team. Oh, and we're getting no-hit by a guy that we discussed trading Kevin Mench for in the off-season. I'm not quite sure how things could be worse for the Brewers right now. I guess I'll cling to the "we're still in first place!" thing while it's still there.
  2. While I'm assuming this was intended as a shot on my home vs. road record thread, I think we can all assume that being 17 game over .500 at the break at home and 7 under on the road DOES indicate a major difference in play, especially when you showed the biggest difference last year. Again, I'm sure you intended this as a joke, but to play along, I'm sure the correlation here is a tougher SOS so far early in the week, more home games earlier in the week, or just plain coincidence. Or a combination of the 3.
  3. I thought about the potential problem this would pose later in August when we want to add Gallardo to the rotation and are forced to remove Suppan, Capuano, or Bush. But that's a good problem to have. Who does Villy replace in the rotation next year? I think it's almost a foregone conclusion that Vargas will be gone. Will Bush?
  4. He's done all he can possibly do to earn himself a spot in the rotation, and it's time to give him the spot in the rotation that he rightfully deserves. We all know Villy can go 6 or 7, it's just been a question of whether he can do it effectively. After a handful of good starts last year, one this year, and a superb effort in the bullpen over the first half of the season, I believe he has proven he can. Villy has the stuff and the poise to give us a solid outing every 5 nights and put our bullpen in position for a victory. We already know what we get with Vargas. It's not terrible for a #5, but we know we get 5 shaky innings, and then it's up in the air. This makes him well suited for long relief. He can step into Villy's old role and handle himself well. It's time to stop being afraid of what will happen to the pen if Villanueva leaves it. He can help us win more games as a starter than a long reliever. We can't sit idly by with the status quo and hope that we have enough to outlast the Cubs until the end of the September. It's time to make a move to improve right now.
  5. BCR - Good post. Here's my take: I believe there may be some correlation between young teams and road struggles. Obviously there are some exceptions, like the Marlins which you noted. However, the Devil Rays tied us last year for biggest home/road differential. As far as whether our home record will maintain, it's going to have to. Playoff teams generally don't play as bad on the road as we do. We're bad enough on the road where a 7-3 homestand generally isn't good enough. We need the 8-1 and 9-1 homestands that we put up earlier this year. The reason I am frustrated about the differential, is that it doesn't seem to me that it needs to be that way. If we can be 30-13 at home, does that not indicate some kind of good ability to win ballgames? No, I don't expect to win 30 of 43 on the road. I don't think, however, that .500 is a lot to ask for from a team that has demonstrated the ability to win 30 of 43 at home. Now, I contemplated the valid point earlier about the fact that we played a tough road schedule in the first half. Now, however, I just can't buy that as much. Failures against the Cubs (average team), Pirates (mediocre/poor team),and Nationals (poor team), indicate to me that we just aren't getting it done on the road, regardless of who it's against. I thought we had started to turn that around against Detroit and Minnesota. Now we seem to have fallen back into the familiar funk. I can see us going something like 55-26 at home and 35 - 46 on the road. That's enough to get us in, probably. But I would like to feel in a playoff game on the road that we have some sort of chance to win.
  6. Yuck...I know we're not 24-10 anymore, but I still expect a lot more from this team than a mediocre 9-9 over a trip that spans 10 games at home and 8 on the road, especially against mostly mediocre competition. Another 9-1 homestand would be just what the doctor ordered. Sounds unrealistic, but we've done it already this year -- twice. I'd be satisfied with 7-3 or better over the next homestand, but we WILL need to continue to be absuredly dominant at home as long as we continue to suck on the road.
  7. Walkoff Grand Slam by Hardy. You heard it here first. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  8. Hardy in. Why was Reyes pulled? Didn't he deserve to get a little more PT than that?
  9. No clutch hitting from the NL whatsoever tonight. Looks like the Brewers out there. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif
  10. Does Reyes have dirt on LaRussa or something?? Still in the game going into the 8th inning? Good grief.
  11. I won't stray too much from the actual topic of the game here, but does anyone know if Sheets going today will make him unavailable to start Friday's game?
  12. Obviously a long ways before this can even really be considered, but just thought it might be fun to talk about. Do you think Fielder has a shot at ever catching Bonds at some point in his career? Obviously, at such a young age, Prince has a very long and productive career in front of him. He is currently on pace for 54 homeruns this season. Let's say he gets there, that would give him 84 homeruns at age 23. We can also assume that at his age, he is not yet in his prime. So let's assume about 50 homeruns per year throughout his career. He might have a breakout year and hit 60, or he might have an off year or injured year and hit 38. 50 homeruns a year would put him at ... 500 homeruns, around his 32nd birthday, in 2016. 600 homeruns, around his 34th birthday, in 2018. 700 homeruns, around his 36th birthday, in 2020. He'd probably pass Ruth at age 36 sometime in 2020. He'd have a shot at catching Aaron at age 37. So, clearly it would take a career where he remained productive up through his high 30's, but that would be awesome if he did. I understand that he may be a DH in the National League by that point and not a Brewer, but it's still fun to talk about our young first baseman having that chance.
  13. Yes, you should be better at home, no question. But you shouldn't have the biggest home to road win disparity in baseball multiple years in a row.
  14. I'm bringing this thread back up from the dead now, because after losing 2 of 3 to the Cubs, 3 of 4 to the Pirates, and 2 of 3 to the Nationals, I think we beginning to realize what an awful disparity this is. We don't have a bad road record because of our road schedule so far. We have a bad road record because we are a bad road team. 19-26 now. I think 8-21 in our last 29. This is unacceptable! We said at the beginning of the season that we needed to be around .500 to think playoffs, that's not looking likely at this point. I can make my peace with dropping 2 of 3 in New York, but when we start to take that tired act to Washington, it's getting a little ridiculous. You don't go 30-13 at home without a great deal of talent. They should not have this much trouble playing away from the friendly confines of Miller Park. If they don't start learning how to win on the road, the Brewers aren't going to the playoffs. That's it.
  15. Well, that oughta do it. Great series, way to lose a series to the freaking Nationals and give up 7 runs, maybe more now. How about learning to play some baseball on the road, Brewers, instead of just the friendly confines of Miller Park. It shouldn't be that much of a disparity.
  16. Who is that ump at 3rd? He cost us a run.
  17. Hey, you were right! Great clutch hit by Prince!!
  18. Getting shut out by the Nationals. Crappy lineups generally yield pretty crappy results.
  19. I would HOPE that Cappy is smart enough to know that the infield fly rule doesn't apply in that kind of situation with just a runner on first. On the other hand, what was J.J. doing??
  20. I'll be another one to admit, I am really getting sick of Ned's happy-go-lucky attitude about everything. I don't expect him to scream at his players, but seriously, how are you going to address the problems if you always act like everything is just peachy? If you played a "great game" against the Nationals and LOST, you're not a World Series caliber team. Period.
  21. No, I'm not saying we lose all the close ones, but it seems like when we trail late, we're pretty much done. My bad on the Florida comeback, forgot about that one that we came back to win in the 13th. Okay, I looked up some numbers for this year. When trailing after the 7th inning, we are 3-29. When trailing after the 8th inning, we are 1-33. Now, I don't know what the league averages are, but I have to imagine that those numbers are pretty dreadful. For a team so good offensively, a team that usually comes out swinging the bats early and well in the 1st and 2nd innings, that's a little disappointing. I certainly don't expect us to win most of the time when we're trailing late, and again, I don't know the league averages, but that looks pretty bad to me. As you can see, if we're trailing late, you can pretty much stick a fork in us. If we're such battlers, such gamers, I'd like them to show me it. Give me a reason to believe that we actually have a chance if we're down by 1 with 1 inning to play.
  22. For a team that prides itself on being scrappy, fighters, gamers, etc. etc, they really suck at late rallies. You know how some teams have that shutdown closer that they feel very confident with a small lead in the 9th? Well, they don't need one against us, they have the fact that we aren't apparently capable of rallying late and finishing the job. I think we have won one game where we trailed going into the 8th inning, against the Cubs where we went on to win in extras. I do not believe we have won a game the entire season when we trailed in the 9th inning. Not one. Correct me if that is wrong. Every time we do manage to rally back to make it close, (9th inning against the Royals, 9th inning against the Twins, 9th inning against the Astros ,) we either come up just short or blow the game later. Well, almost doesn't count in baseball. This team gets far too much credit for fighting til the very end, not giving up, etc. etc. Not saying they do give up, but I've got news -- if we're trailing after the 7th inning, it's pretty much over this year. Just no real exciting late rallies to speak of.
