  1. A little off topic, but Trenni was the "sideline" reporter for last month's Boston Marathon was able to induce an epic interview with the women's winner (who was on the verge of hypothermia) that had my running friends talking for days. BTW, does anyone here remember Bob Brainard?
  2. Our second shift Technician got canned this past Wednesday. So guess who is covering until a replacement is found (in this market)? Just when the team was starting to play well.
  3. Once the defense begins to abandon the field, the play is over. I'd say the run counts.
  4. This happened to the Brewers once, about 30 years ago. Lost to the Yankees. The local TV news and ESPN reported the final score as "3-1". Pick up the paper the next morning and the score actually was 4-1.
  5. I have done that once. Yes, a parking ramp at the Howard stop. Just seem to recall a long drive from the Interstate to Howard, lots of traffic lights(?) Last time, I drove to Skokie and took the yellow to red. I would do it again.
  6. Ironically enough, a Pizza Ranch is under construction four blocks from my home. Kinda looking forward to it.
  7. That must have been quite a game to see. Back in the day (yeah, yeah) I remember my dad taking us to the Madison Sectional held at the UW-Fieldhouse. Double header on Friday night and Consolation game/Title game Saturday night. This was before the girls had a state tournament. The energy crisis ended the double headers and consolation games. With the girls tournament now in Green Bay, I wonder about the feasibility of returning to the Fieldhouse for sectional games. And yes, I can see a D1 sectional at the Arena in Milwaukee and various D1 and D2 sectionals at the satellite campuses. I know Illinois at one time had all the super-sectionals at various D1 gyms. Don't know if they still do, stop following Illinois long time ago.
  8. The principle can be withdrawn anytime. Up to $10K in earnings can be withdrawn to purchase a principle residence.
  9. Now that the Games have closed, some final thoughts: The last two Olympics NBC would cut away during the CC to premiere some lame program. At least this time they signed off before going to programming. I think the 'stach is somewhat overrated. Was up until 3:30 Friday watching the curling match, despite swearing in 2014 to never watch John Schuster again. I figured the match would be decided in the tenth end, so took a catnap. Luckily woke up in the eight just in time to witness the double-take out heard around the world. Oh Germany, why? On the PP, all they had to do was control the puck and run out the clock. Why dump it in the zone? Finally, I know it's been nine days but I'm still intrigued by Ester Ledecka. How often is there a two-sport athlete in the Games? Why didn't the media cover it from Day 1 (O.C.). Because she isn't American? Doing some digging I see the NYT ran a story on her back in November. Also, from the American media coverage one would think that was the only Alpine race she did. I see she also raced two days prior, taking 23rd in the slalom race Shiffrin won.
  10. Totally worth staying up until 1:30 this morning, even though I start work at 6:30. I thought they were outplayed from the first intermission until the tying goal, then they woke up and played like winners.
  11. Watching the women's downhill live last night was pretty cool, especially the extended shot of Vonn in the starthouse and broadcasting 25 of the 39 starters. It's nice NBC is showing more live coverage this Olympics. Tonight is *the* hockey game everyone is looking forward to. I believe seven ex-Badgers on the ice. The only drawback is we're getting Marv Albert as opposed to Mike Emrick. And as always, bobsled's John Morgan is my favorite analyst in all televised sports. On edit: Kenny, not Marv. Although they do sound alike.
  12. Watched the third period of the USA-OAR men's hockey. It was watching men vs boys. Did anyone watch women's Super-G Friday evening? Dan Hicks and Bode Miller saying the contenders were in the first nineteen skiers, so they sign off and I went to bed thinking the Austrian won, only to wake up this morning to find out some unknown in Bib #26 won. Anyone know if NBC went back to coverage (after 10:30) to break the news? Lindsey Jacobellis failed to win gold again. Didn't know she was still active until I saw the Toyota commercial Wednesday. I thought it was Vancouver she crashed while hot-dogging, but it's been twelve years already!
  13. I'm always stoked about the Winter Olympics. I was out of work during the last two, so had time to watch everything. This year my viewing will be limited. My interests are bobsleigh, alpine skiing, XC and biathlon, long track speedskating and women's hockey. Too old to get into the X-Games stuff. Attended the speedskating trials here in Milwaukee.
  14. So, was he walking around with this stuff in a suitcase? Twenty kg is quite a load to carry around, three or four bowling balls.
  15. I don't think Milwaukee will get/support an NHL franchise based on my observations moving from Madison to Milwaukee many years ago - youth hockey is extremely popular in the Madison area and the Milwaukee suburbs are just a fraction of it. They start 'em young. Attended an Ads game soon after moving here and noticed many people were there primarily to see the fights as opposed to watching the technical aspects of the game. Been to just one other game since. A Milwaukee NHL team isn't even on my radar.
  16. Four games this weekend which I had zero interest and I saw one play. Never seen anything like it. Bigger than Brandon Bostick. One pet peeve I have is when people say :Prevent defense prevents wins." Today was Exhibit A. My brother moved to JAX six years ago and went down last year to visit and catch the Packer game. Curious to see how they do on Sunday.
  17. Mid-major college basketball has good value because most people prefer to wager on big name teams/games on TV. The bookies won't put as much as effort into analyzing the lesser interesting games. Baseball is the most difficult due to all the variables that go into a game (lefty/righty starter, home field, bullpen availability, etc.)
  18. Does this have something to do with the whole collusion thing back in the 80's? Paul Molitor was a free-agent after the 1987 season and no other teams showed interest in signing, IIRC.
  19. Interesting. I didn't know he was still in coaching. The guy MM replaced. https://www.montrealalouettes.com/2017/12/20/mike-sherman-nomme-entraineur-chef-alouettes-de-montreal/?c_rid=67yf0cqp019O0L29aDg2094097076%7C27828442&utm_source=Master&utm_medium=email&utm_term=Site+Officiel&utm_campaign=372182_ANNONCE_NOUVEAU_COACH_FR_2017-12-20&utm_sourcenew_parameter=Carma
  20. The most important football game since maybe the 1993 game against Michigan State. Too bad they couldn't pull this one off. Just had the gut feeling the Ohio State was going to take it..because they're Ohio State. The only silver lining is the Buckeyes still couldn't make the playoff. Disappointed in missing out on a Jan 1 bowl game, but a Saturday evening game in prime time is the next best thing.
  21. I have two friends who work in HR who told you take a job with a company, you owe them two years and that's it. We just had a guy in his early 60's who was here three years, who had the no loyalty philosophy, got jerked around a bit but stuck it out, then was let go when we re-located and re-engineered the workforce. It doesn't take two years to train an experienced employee. The honeymoon lasts a couple of months, most. Unfortunately, it took many years into my career to realize employers only pay you enough to keep you from leaving, while the gap between what you earn and your market worth widens.
  22. For several years now. I believe the explanation given for going away from the corner-coffin approach is that corner coffin kicking made it susceptible to having it blocked.
  23. I haven't followed the qualifying this quadrennial as closely as in past years. I knew the USA's position was shaky but assumed everything would work itself out. I'm curious to see retroactively what the odds were of the planets lining up for USNMT's elimination. On another note, NED ouster should be an even bigger stunner.
  24. That sums it up for me as well. Two chances at a WS run is better than one. Sure you could lose the 1 WC game right away, but you could just as easily be a quick out in the one series as division winner. I don't think I could name all of the division winners over the past couple years. Winning the division doesn't matter either, no one remembers what a team did unless they make the WS. 2 WC's gets you 2 shots, 1 division title gets you 1 shot. An interesting thought. It's always good to know that you're the best at what you do (ie division champions), however with things being watered down with six vs four divisions and five vs seven teams, a division championship doesn't seem to have that same value it used to.
