  1. Marte has some filthy stuff, especially against lefties. Although Fielder is scuffling a bit, he just looked about as smooth as I would up at the plate. Hope you're watching, Doug. Next time these teams hook up, Marte needs to be in a Brewers uniform.
  2. Horrible play by Mench. Brewers are going to have to make some hay against the Pirates 'pen here.
  3. You don't bring in your long man in the fourth to pitch an inning and 2/3. If Yost was going to hit for the pitcher, he'd have relieved Cappy with someone else. Hopefully Yo doesn't fall apart here, or things could get ugly.
  4. "A bit strange to leave Gallardo in here..." Not at all. No reason to destroy the pen. Of course, if Villanueva was available... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  5. Two things I would bet my life savings on: 1) Griffey's not coming to Milwaukee. 2) Jenkins won't be traded during the stretch run.
  6. "Youman stinks and Cappy is generally pretty good." In limited action w/ the Pirates last year, Youman compiled a 2.91 ERA. 'Small sample size' me all you want, but to make a blanket statement that he stinks seems like spurious logic to me. He?s no Cy Young, but he?s gotten big league hitters out before. Have you looked at Capuano's numbers vs. Pittsburgh? They're wretched. Add in the fact that he?s coming off the DL, so we don?t know what to expect, and it's tough to like the matchup no matter WHO the Pirates are throwing. Like I said, more power to you brother, I hope you?re right. I?m just not seeing what you?re seeing, especially regarding Capuano.
  7. Doesn't sound weird at all. I don't think anyone is expecting a blockbuster from Melvin at the deadline, but I'd say it's pretty likely that we don't head into the stretch run with Shouse as our only left-handed option in the pen.
  8. Grizzled playoff vet. Hitting over .300 w/ 20 steals for a lousy Rangers team that's going nowhere. The primary problem is that he's an every day guy that the Crew wouldn't use every day, but if he'd be willing to be the fourth outfielder, take some spot starts in center vs. righties, pinch hit and pinch run, he'd be like a studly version of Gwynn Jr for the stretch run. No idea what his contract is, and the Rangers asking price would probably be too steep, aside from the chemistry/playing time issues, but hey, this is the kind of stuff I like to think about. Everyone can now pile on and tell me why this is stupid. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. Assuming Bonds has broken the record by late August, Milwaukee at San Fran isn't a real appealing matchup.
  10. Don't worry Russ, we're not going to hold you to it. This one's just for fun. Here's what my gut tells me, today. I reserve the right to completely change my mind tomorrow. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I like the way the Crew matches up with LA, and I'd take the Brewers to survive and advance. Mets sweep Padres. Angels outlast the Tigers in by far the best first round series, and Red Sox take out the gritty Tribe. Mets in six over the Brew Crew, getting clutch hitting from the heart of their order. No shame in a season like that for the young Brewers, who can now say they've been there, and start planning world domination in 2008. Red Sox over Angels in surprisingly easy fashion. Mets over Red Sox in six. The champs return to New York, but not the Bronx. Long, cold winter for the Boss.
  11. "I think this pitching match up looks very good." This from the guy who believes in the value of statistics? Sounds like a Yost-esque gut instinct from Russ. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Love it, hope you're right and I'm wrong. Would be great to find a way today, and assure themselves no worse than a split, with Sheeter still to throw.
  12. I'm pretty sure Melvin could find a spot for him, if Pittsburgh decides to give him the Aramis Ramirez treatment.
  13. "I totally agree with peavey and a few others that guessed maybe he is being stretched out for a move into the rotation." Keeping Villy "stretched out" is the only explanation that doesn't make my head spin, but even then, the timing seems really strange, with a four day layoff right around the corner. As for the guy who asked why anyone would dare question one of Yost's decisions after a win - consider this a corrolary to Russ' pitching thread. When the Brewers lose, it does not automatically follow that Yost managed poorly, and when they win, it doesn't automatically follow that he managed flawlessly. I reserve the right to guess along with (and second guess) the manager all season long. Frankly, that's what makes baseball so enjoyable to me.
  14. "Bush's ERA is basically the same as last year if you remove the 6 run 1st inning versus the Cubs in his first start." But how does it compare if you take out his worst inning from 2006? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  15. Man, the Pirates have raked Capuano. Factor in some rust, and I'll just hope for Cappy to control the bleeding tomorrow. Can the bats score double digits again, please?
  16. Late to the party here, but I'll echo the "what was Yost thinking" sentiment with throwing Villy four innings, when the final three were prime garbage time. Burned up arguably his best reliever for the final three games of the series. Work with us here, Ned, at least give rubber arm Shouse the 9th. C'est la vie, at least he's got the rest of the 'pen nice and fresh. Here's to hoping they lock down the Pittsburgh bats when called upon.
  17. Fans are so stupid. Thank God I'm not one. Uh, wait...
  18. Sacrifice a bucket of fried chicken.
  19. I don't think anyone said Ned should be fired for playing Counsell or Graffanino, especially when Weeks was out with an injury. What was the alternative? Obviously a healthy Weeks is an upgrade over a healthy Graffy or CC. I think the gist of this thread is people trying to determine if he's just slumping/pressing in the short time since his return, or if he is still having trouble playing through the wrist pain.
  20. "also... it seems like rickie is one of those guys that would rather just play through the pain (if there still is some) and try to keep it quiet rather than go back to the team and say he can't play with it." That's true, although if he's already experiencing pain that is affecting his swing after that prolonged layoff, that would be a bummer. Hopefully he's just a little rusty from the layoff. As Russ says, too small a sample to be truly concerned - yet.
  21. I think a lot of us have some trepidation about this series. PNC has been a tough place to play for Milwaukee in the past. Chance for a bit of an emotional letdown after the "big" series w/ the Cubs. Not sure what to expect from Capuano in his first game back. Facing Snell and Gorzelanny back to back. All of that said, I feel good about tonight's game. Suppan had a rough stretch in June, but pitched pretty well his last time out, and historically has pitched well vs. the Pirates. I expect a good outing out of Soup, and the offense to score enough runs to make this one a 'W'.
  22. Wear both shirts, Brewers on top. When the Cubs bully implodes and coughs up the game, peel off a layer for timely mocking.
  23. I'm not gonna lie. If the Cubs were 0-161, and they were playing a team that was a half-game behind the first place Brewers, I'd have a tough time rooting for Chicago.
  24. "I guess that's why I don't get too excited over Brewer players going. It just means those players will be more expensive to resign." What, you don't think it's important for some Brewers to be on hand to make sure we get homefield advantage for the World Series? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
