  1. Small ball usually works in the playoffs, but not against the 2009 Yankees.
  2. That was an entertaining game. I'm not a big fan of either team, but I'm happy for Brad Lidge.
  3. This is clearly a crazy family, but the calls for child support to come in are predictable, yet unfortunate. On a more positive note, maybe this will give a bad name to some of the morons who storm chase without any professional background.
  4. You have to give credit to all of the division series winners for taking care of business on the road. It sure looked like all the superior teams won--no wild card winners advancing this year.
  5. I'm not sure Escobar can maintain high enough of an OBP. In an ideal world, the 1-3 would be Weeks, Braun, Fielder, but we all know that would never happen with Macha.
  6. It now looks like at least 2 of the teams that I was pulling for will advance to the next round (LAD for sure, hopefully LAA and COL also). By the way, the temperature for that Rockies game is only going to be 10 degrees warmer than tonight (mid 30s vs. mid 20s).
  7. Some of the ski resorts in Colorado have already opened. We got kind of lucky with only some flurries. Minneapolis had accumulating snow, and parts of Nebraska had up to 15".
  8. Just saw the first flakes of the year in Madison
  9. It was interesting to see several empty sections down the outfield lines at Dodger Stadium. I know the Dodgers were #1 in the league in regular season attendance, but I thought they would have been able to sell out their playoff games.
  10. It is true that all of us could look at a basic stat sheet and predict wins/losses for next year. In fact, I could just take every team's W/L record from 2009 and add 0 or 5 wins to it and come fairly close for 2010. If every GM can do that also, then there is no way to gain a competitive advantage if everyone knows the value of basic stats. However, if I am looking for free agents to sign and I only have a small budget, it might be useful to find a stat like WAR to combine with more traditional player evaluation in order to gain a competitive advantage. Maybe WAR is not the answer, but it is important to continue developing/researching statistical methods.
  11. Climate Change/Energy crisis...it'll be slow and painful.
  12. The Farmers' Almanac does look at scientific things like ENSO and sunspot cycles as well as their "secret formula" to do weather predictions. I'm guessing the sunspot minimum might be causing them to forecast a below normal winter. The climate prediction center is officially forecasting a 40-50% chance of above normal temperatures (vs. 33% if it was completely random). The Milwaukee NWS also did some graphing of previous El Nino winters and found that December was generally cold and snowy while January and February were warmer and less snowy. However, this was only based on like a 6 year sample size. I guess nobody really knows for sure, but keep in mind that last winter was actually slightly above normal, even though it may have felt colder due to the number of warm winters in the past 10 years.
  13. I am a fan of all types of "exciting" weather which includes snow. The first flakes of the season are always exciting even if it will probably be only a few flurries on Monday morning. With an El Nino winter expected, we probably will see warm temperatures and below normal snowfall this winter--although one big storm can throw off the numbers.
  14. It's that time again--models have been showing snowflakes for Wisconsin on Sunday night!!! Nothing major is anticipated, but it would not be unheard of for somebody in the Midwest to get lucky (or unlucky) and pick up a few inches. The last time we had October snow that I can remember was 2006. Milwaukee had 0.2" of snow on October 12, 2006 and Madison had 2.3" on October 21, 2006.
  15. I was really pulling for the Twins...but maybe it's because the Brett Favre mess doesn't bother me.
  16. Want Rockies/Dodgers Angels/Twins Rockies/Twins Rockies Actual (basically the opposite): Cardinals/Phillies Yankees/Red Sox Yankees/Cardinals Yankees Should be a boring postseason for the flyover region of the country.
  17. The milestones keep on falling!!! RBI #140 for Prince SB #20 for Braun Also, if we finish 80-82, that will tie 1996 as our 4th best season in the last 17 years.
  18. Suppan has given the Brewers exactly what they should have expected.
  19. Maybe this will be a message to Chicago that they need to start dealing with the important issues instead of blowing hundreds of millions of dollars on a 2 week event.
  20. Rockies. Grittiest team in baseball. I have no idea how they have that many wins with that rotation. Plus, I might be moving to Colorado next year.
  21. I've been pulling for the Rockies, so I hope the Brewers win and the Braves lose.
  22. We have a better chance of signing Roy Halladay than Ben Sheets.
  23. Piniero reminds me of Suppan. He is likely benefiting from Duncan's instruction and has an ERA this year over a full run below his career average. He's only given up 7 HR this year but he gave up 20+ in 6 out of the 7 years before that. Somebody is going to end up paying way too much for him.
  24. Not a very impressive list. I would pass on all of the above and try to acquire pitching via trades.
