  1. I just completed the Madison half-marathon last week and plan to do a full next year. I have slowly been building up my milage over a period of a year and a half. Over that time, I have suffered a number of injuries due to overextending myself which has prevented me from attempting a marathon to this point. From this, I have learned: 1. Don't increase your mileage too fast, better to train more shorter runs and only 1 or 2 long runs/week. 2. If something starts to hurt (more than normal soreness), stop right away and take a day off or reduce your milage 3. Develop a stretching routine 4. Try to run on soft surfaces as much as possible 5. It doesn't matter how fast you run or how many walking breaks you take as long as you get the miles in.
  2. Have fun in Witte! One advantage to the 10th floor is that you should have a good view of either the Kohl Center or Lake Mendota depending on which side of the building you are on. Also remember that if you have any roommate issues or decide you don't like Witte, it is a relatively simple process to change rooms or dorms. Oh, and get hockey tickets.
  3. Unfortunately, the LF bleachers tried to start the wave during Braun's 6th inning AB, but it failed when he hit a double.
  4. I was also at this one...I also really enjoyed it--my second 3-2 victory in a row. The crowds in general this year seem to be better than last year and it really showed tonight. Coffey was in big trouble with 2 on and no outs and a 2-0 count...but instead of starting the booing again, the crowd started to cheer Coffey on. After he got the double play, the place got really loud!!! Everyone also stuck around until the end of the game--probably because the game was short, but hopefully also to see Trevor Time, which is a blast. Our fans have always been great, but I think not having Yost around and the relief of making the playoffs might be leading to more optimistic, upbeat crowds. I know it has taken time for me to be optimistic about the Brewers so hopefully the average fan is becoming both more informed about the game and less harsh to the home players. Time will tell though. Oh, and my younger brother was very excited for both Corey Hart's game winning HR and rumors that he is looking at house near my parents home in Greenfield!
  5. I started saving around 1997. It is a spotty collection, but I probably have about 2/3 of the games that I have gone to. The tickets from the last games at County Stadium are the coolest ones.
  6. I was at that Burnitz walk-off HR game...first ever interleague game at County Stadium. I am 99% sure Burnitz won the game in the bottom 9th, not extra innings. I doubt this will turn things around for Bill Hall, but it is nice to know that he is capable of making adjustments.
  7. This is probably more game thread related, but this is what I got out of it... 1. It was obvious that Mauer got hit in the hand. 2. The umpire didn't seem interested in reversing the call until Gardenhire started yelling. 3. As unlikely as it was that the call would be reversed, there was absolutely zero chance of Macha getting the call reversed again. His only chance would have been to run out of the dugout as soon as there was any indication that the call was going to be reversed. 4. We got swept because we threw gopher balls to all-star hitters.
  8. I'm taking Braun because Mauer is only signed through 2010.
  9. I appreciated this comment on Deadspin:
  10. Maybe they should come up with a curse to take some of the blame off the front office. Curse of Bud Selig from 1994?
  11. I generally trust Macha, but it is still important to discuss his questionable moves of late. Gallardo didn't pitch well on essentially 10 days rest. Several starters have been removed lately with < 90 pitches. Tonight's move was exactly what the title says it is--a typical Yost decision. We all knew Bill Hall was going to strike out, there was a viable option on the bench, and Macha went with Hall anyway. It doesn't matter if they were on a 7 game winning streak or losing streak. It still counts for 1/162 and the Brewers missed an opportunity to get Braun up with a chance to tie the game/take the lead.
  12. Bill Hall is my favorite player--but that is the Bill Hall who hit the ball both ways and came through late in the game. That being said, I would also rather see Gamel in there against all righties from now on. I worry a little about Gamel because he seems to swing at just about everything, but unlike Hall, he actually hits the pitches.
  13. It's not just ESPN. The Mets/Giants game last Saturday on Fox was a brutal Mets lovefest. I'm not sure who the announcers were, but they concluded that the Mets were easily the best team in the NL East and were only struggling due to injuries. After yet another error resulted in unearned runs for Santana, they casually mentioned that the Mets had defensive problems, but said their offense would "easily" make up for it. This sequence of events made the choke to the Dodgers the other night that much more enjoyable.
  14. It's not a mug, but I could see how that Kalahari platform could be easily converted to a mug when the sponsorship ends. It already kind of looks like the top of a mug.
  15. It's just too early to tell. They started 26-15 in 2007 and only finished 83-79. Obviously, there are a number of differences between the two teams--the 2009 team is essentially the 2007 core team with more experienced players and a more experienced coaching staff. This year they are beating up on the division rivals, in 2007 (and even 2008) they feasted off of the bottom feeders. The 2007 team couldn't win on the road. The 2007 team didn't draw walks and depended too much on home runs. Johnny Estrada was the catcher in 2007 and Turnbow was still around. There will be at least one more 4-9 stretch this year, but you just get the feeling that this year is different. They might not be the best team on paper, but there is still time to make a trade if they have to. Losing Weeks will hurt in the long run, but they still have plenty of offensive weapons. The World Series talk will undoubtely come up, especially if they extend this winning streak or open up a big lead in the division. My attitude is just to ride the wave. We don't know if the great play will continue or end tomorrow. The postseason is essentially a crapshoot, the key is just to get there and let things happen. They only need to go another 12 or so games above .500 the rest of the way.
  16. As we develop a reputation for not running, it will probably give us more chances to run again in a few weeks. Corey Hart is capable of stealing bases and I like when Braun takes a base with Fielder at the plate.
  17. I'm torn about this because I really like the wild card, but ideally you would have 32 teams with 8 divisions and no wild card. There's something fundamentally wrong with naming a second-place team world champions. I guess it would be fair if there was complete competitive balance, otherwise it would be too unfair for small markets to always have to finish ahead of the big market teams to get in.
  18. The Reds are quietly making a push to be contenders this year. Once the weather warms up, it will be interesting to see if their pitching holds up at Great American Smallpark.
  19. He seems better suited to the #5 spot based on the change in numbers. I was always opposed to Hart as a leadoff hitter, but it might be time for a switch. Counsell also deserves a look as leadoff hitter.
  20. So it doesn't have anything to do with Citi Field? That place is probably going to end up being a top-5 pitchers' ballpark. Also, the rotations are still set up so that Santana is facing the opposing team's ace. He's faced Aaron Harang, Josh Johnson (twice), Yovani Gallardo, Scott Olsen, Chan Ho Park, and Derek Lowe. Finally, he only pitched 6.1 innings yesterday. If he finished his games like Greinke, he wouldn't have to deal with the bullpen blowing it. With 0 complete games so far, you are always leaving it up to someone else to finish it up. The only pro-Phillips argument that I can think of is that his slow style bores his defense, which results in errors and unearned runs.
  21. There are just some people who go to games to get drunk and are looking to start a fight--on both sides. Remember though, it takes two to tango. There are a number of ways to respond to obnoxious fans--you can get into an altercation with them, you can respond with friendly jokes, you can ignore them, or you can go straight to an usher or police officer. The Cubs fans are paying customers and are equally entitled to be in the ballpark. The Brewers fans can try to scare them away by creating a hostile environment, but this just creates a bad reputation for the fanbase. The better option is just to buy tickets to the games and not resell them to Cubs fans. On Friday night, the majority of Cubs fans were sitting in the field and loge levels. We were in a terrace section with over 90% Brewers fans. If Brewers fans are so great, why are the season ticket holders selling to Cubs fans?
  22. Seeing Chad Fox walk off the field was the first time I have ever felt sorry for a Cubs player. The look on his face said it all...a year of rehab and his season (and likely career) ends after one inning.
  23. After last night's game, I would say there is no doubt that the Brewers have officially taken back Miller Park. It was 70-80% Brewers fans.
  24. Are these the same "classy" Cardinals fans that came up with this shirt? http://joesportsfan.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/zambrano-mows-my-lawn1.jpg
