  1. Here is how I arrived at that number: 45 total players: 40 players on roster with 5 on 60 Day DL - 7 free agents: Anderson, Boxbeger, Escobar, Norris, Pina, Strickland, and Axford - 1 Garcia declines Mutual option - 7 Non-Tender/DFA: Lopes, Maile, Mathias, Milner, Topa, Vogelbach, Yardley =30 (10 open spots) Now they have no reason to DFA pre-arb guys like Lopes, Mathias, Milner, Topa, and Yardley but they could if they have someone better. I think Maile will be non-tendered since he no longer has an option left and that was his main source of value (his Sept numbers notwithstanding). Vogelbach seems redundant on this team unless the DH is added. I think Topa gets released and resigned as a minor leaguer to finish up his rehab in a wink/wink type of contract. Milner is replaceable with a minor league free agent. I did not include Pablo Reyes, Corey Ray, or Angel Perdomo but they are on the bubble as well. They may have shown enough last year to keep them on the roster. Since they only really need to protect one Rule 5 guy (maybe a couple more) they could do some creative things with this advantage. As you say, make a trade with teams that have a roster crunch, pick up some players on waivers, and/or protect a couple of minor league free agents like David Dahl and Carlos Luna.
  2. I updated the first post of this list to remove names of released players (Derby) and made a few tweaks to some of the maybes. I still think Howell is likely to be protected with Bullock maybe next likely. Lutz was awful so I think he could slip through the draft without being protected. Hintzen and Castenada have an outside chance of being protected. Lazar, Wilson, Martinez, and Fry are the only other names I think have a chance. Brewers have lots of free agents clearing spots as well as potential non-tenders, so I could see 10 open spots on the 40 man roster. There should be no risk of losing a player with that many spots open.
  3. I also question whether Taylor could hold up for a whole season but that is really a gut feeling. None of the stats I can see provide any evidence to that. Also don't know why you say he is a K machine. Career K rate in majors is 21% and minors is 14%. I think he deserves a shot but the Brewers should not just hand him the job.
  4. Hintzen has been an under the radar prospect this year and had a nice finish to the season. His K/9 of 12.3 look great as well as the other peripherals, except for the homers. Homers have never been a problem for him in the past, but sure bit him this year. He needs to be protected from the Rule 5 draft this year so I wonder if the Brewers will protect him. I would not have thought so, but his inclusion in the AFL makes me think they view him higher than I thought.
  5. I expect big years from Yelich and Hiura now this Haines character isn't holding them back.
  6. Its odd to hear that Cohen was "frustrated" that he could not talk to GMs currently under contract. Isn't that the whole point of signing contracts? So you have stability during that period. If it does not work out and the owner has to fire the GM, he still has to pay the GM the rest of his contract. The owner should get something for that guaranteed contract. The article also floating whether the Brewers would consider letting Stearns go in a trade with the return being someone like Jeff McNeill. He's having a poor season but has a great track record. If the Mets job was truly Stearns dream job, I could see Attanasio not wanting to stand in the way. We do have Matt Arnold waiting in the wings and its unlikely both can be kept in the org for the long term. Mark could ask for a McNeill or even Dom Smith (also having a bad year). Either of those would be nice depth to replace Avisail next year. Might be too steep of an ask but if I were him, I would ask.
  7. You mean like in 1995 when we used 4 catchers regularly in the starting lineup. Surhoff in LF, Nillson in RF, Matheny/Oliver at catcher. Sadly, it sort of worked. 3 of the 4 had pretty good seasons, though they should have tried them at pitcher cause they had none that year. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIL/1995.shtmlThese mid to late 90s teams were the genesis of my user name. I think I am ready to change it now, thanks to Stearns and company.
  8. I'm sure the Brewers will retire his number and deservedly so considering his numbers and loyalty to the team. I dont recall the Brewers ever holding a grudge about the PED use. The only reason they would not do it is if there was indication that the Brewers fans were against it. I dont think that is the case at least in the majority of fans.
  9. You guys are way more pessimistic of Ray than I am. He posted the highest OPS of his career this year (.825). His K rate has dropped to 29% for the year (20% in August) so he is making progress. These are small samples and its not like he is lighting the world on fire. He also cannot stay on the field - not having played in almost a month. So he is hardly one of my top prospects, but I am not totally writing him off. He should at least still be in the outfield prospect discussion. There is no 40 man roster crunch so I so no reason to drop him from the 40. He is close though and this latest injury did not help his cause. Grisham and Ty Taylor are excellent examples of not writing off top prospects too soon. Sometimes it takes a while for a prospect to figure it out.
  10. These are the good old days of Brewers baseball. The Yount-Molitor era was pretty good too because from 1978-1992 the Brewers had several really good teams that were entertaining and competitive but didn’t get the playoff appearances in no small part because of being in the brutal AL East where there were always at least a couple very good teams. Every one of the 7 teams except the Indians won the division at least once in that period and advanced to the World Series. There were a few years in which the Brewers failed to make the playoffs despite having more wins (sometimes several more wins) than the winners of the AL West. This is a good point. How many of those teams from '78-'92 would have made the playoffs if there was 3 division winners and two wild cards. I love watching the current club but those past teams were really good they just didn't get the playoff opportunities due to no wild card and more teams in the division to compete with.
  11. Well, Wiemer has an absolute cannon for an arm. Well above Hart's arm. Overall, his fielding rates as at least average.
  12. Ha. They listed Joey as a SS. Ahh, we can dream. A 6'5" 215 lb shortstop.
  13. Not sure I follow the Fry promotion. He's deserving of a callup but my count that means there are 33 players on the roster not including Broxton. I guess the roster limits are not tightly adhered to. They have 4 catchers at AAA and 1 at AA. Maybe this means Thomas Dillard will get more looks at C (or another move is pending) I love all these promotions. Its fun to see these guys move up.
  14. The 1982 team was tied for 31st best (104 ERA-). I know it was the wallbangers offense driven team, but hard to believe we have seen 30 better pitching staffs in team history.
  15. Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man... Wow, I just watched that movie last night. Its been too long. I dont think I would have caught that quote otherwise... Dude.
  16. The Brewers LH hitters are actually not bad against LH pitchers. Tellez and Wong are better vs LH. Peterson is not bad. Yelich is not good this year but historically he's been very tough on LHs.
  17. What do folks think of Corey Ray. He has a 825 OPS and has reduced his K rate to 28%. Once a top prospect, so you never know. Maybe he can become the next Ty Taylor
  18. If we DFA Pablo Lopez I'll be pissed. Heck, I don't remember when we traded for him. That would be one formidable rotation. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lopezpa01.shtml
  19. That Wisconsin OF is loaded now. Frelick, Gray, C. Rodriguez, Wiemer. LG Castillo is also having a good season. Not enough spots to go around even with the DH.
  20. What, like signing a 3rd basemen to play RF? That would be a Stearns move.
  21. Thanks for posting this as well as the other tidbits you dig up for these link reports. I definitely appreciate the effort that goes into it. Its often tough to see who is on a hot streak and you and Mass do a great job on these Link Reports. Carlos has been an intriguing player to follow the last few years. Great hit tool and speed and I heard his defense is very good as well. But no power and previously he drew very few walks. The Brewers really pushed him this year. 20 year old skipping low A to play for Wisconsin and to no surprise he struggled early on. However, as I dug deeper, looks like they had him working on drawing more walks. His career walk rate his first two years was a paltry 3%. He has that up to 10% this year. His BA is now up to .265 and his OBP is .339. He may never provide much power but his floor is looking like a 4th OF, which still has value. His career splits are pretty dramatic, really struggling against southpaws, but a platoon bat as an occasional starter would be a nice realistic outcome. I saw him play once this year in Appleton and not much was hit to him so I did not get to see his defense. Can anyone comment on how good is his glove? Is that a potential plus tool. Fangraphs / MLB has him as a FV of 60 there so it sounds like it is.
  22. He's 5'-7" tall. Its impossible for him to be a successful major league player I put that in blue but it would not surprise me at all as to why he was left off the top 30.
  23. Why would you risk a $19M QO to Avi in an even year. Avi has shown he cannot hit in an even year.
