  1. MLB Trade rumors is reporting Lo Cain has multiple 4 year offers on the table and narrowing down teams. That's a lot for 31 year old who is already on the decline. I'm not sure how I feel about this. If we sign him it means a number of other things have happened (santana / Brinson traded).
  2. It matters to the fans. They are putting on a product. They should be trying to win. I realize we dont have to show up to prove a point, but that is just bad for baseball.
  3. I'm not a fan of a "hard salary floor", but I think we need to discourage teams from tanking. What about penalizing teams that are below some team salary threshold AND have a low number of wins. This way young teams with low payrolls (like the Brewers last year) are not forced to go sign free agents they don't need (and block younger prospects) as long as they are winning. Or if a team has a low salary and are not winning they are encouraged to trade for more established players (with higher salaries). The penalty for not doing so could be a loss of draft picks or a drop in their draft order.
  4. While I'm always happy when we sign low risk minor league players, it seems odd that Ji-Man would choose the Brewers. While not superstars, Thames and Aguilar both had OPS > 800. You would think there were better opportunities for him.
  5. I would have preferred him over Gallardo, but this is this consequence of that signing. Ohh well. Probably not a big deal.
  6. Not sure if anyone saw this but... Dillard sings... in Spanish? He brought down the house. I didn't realize he was so popular.
  7. Why wouldn't Cleveland just sign Cain? His bat is not as good as santana but he plays CF with pretty good D. They would not lose any prospects as well.
  8. Great news! Nick was the minor lg FA I wanted to resign the most. His signing makes Wang/Webb more expendable should we need a 40 man spot. With those two Boone Logan and Hader and now Nick (in the minors) we finally have some LH relief depth.
  9. I think you guys are just reading into this too much. Its likely just a depth move. No harm in adding a minor league FA.
  10. Harrison is a guy I cringe when he is mentioned in trade talks. He has the potential to be a huge star and we will regret if we trade him. There is still a lot of risk there and He could also be a bust but I love the upside. Brinson is still a better prospect in my mind, but because he has a higher floor. But I think Harrison has a higher ceiling.
  11. The only reason to trade Braun is to make room for the up and coming OFs. This does not really solve that (except in 2020). Kemp is far worse of a player than Braun (especially defensively). I dont think the Brewers would bench Kemp. Even with prospects, I just don't see the Brewers making that trade. Braun is still a good hitter, better than either Phillips and Brinson will likely be in 2018. And those two will get their opportunities when he goes down for is annual injury.
  12. Gallardo is not better than any of those four. Drake/Webb are close, but they are younger than Gallardo and at least have some peripherals that give hope they could be useful. At least they have a high K/9. Gallardo was just bad the last two years. While a SP has a higher value than a RP, a bad SP is far more damaging to a team than a bad RP (in terms of pure innings and runs allowed) I don't mind losing Drake/Webb/Baker (I'd like to hang on to Wang), I just don't want to lose them to obtain worse players.
  13. Gallardo is a low floor, low ceiling type of pitcher. I don't know why they would give him a 40 man roster spot. If he was a minor league FA, then I would have no problem with this. But if they want to sign any other FA, they are going to have to DFA someone and quite frankly no one is worse than Gallardo on our 40 man. So this is not a low risk sign. Someone better than Gallardo is going to be exposed to waivers or released to sign anyone else.
  14. Nice strikeout numbers last year... and I loved him in Monsters inc.
  15. [sarcasm]This should quiet all those who were being impatient with DS. Here is our big free agent signing. Our new #1 starter[/sarcasm]
  16. I'm hoping Dubon is the future 2b. However he has a good chance to just be a good utility IF and not a starter. It is prudent for the Brewers to see what is out there and what the cost is ($ or players in a trade) for an established 2B. No reason to not see what is out there.
  17. It appears to be for Starlin Castro, who had a great year last year at 2B. Would he be our new trade target? He'll only be 28 and had a near 800 OPS last year. Not exactly the leadoff type hitter we need, and is somewhat strikeout prone but is signed through 2019 for $22M which is not too bad.
  18. Maybe he can play catcher. All that kneeling has strengthened his knees
  19. I seriously don't think Hughes will be the difference maker. I agree that non-tendering Hughes is a bit of a head scratcher. I would have non-tendered Vogt and Jeffress before Hughes. But Hughes is on the wrong side of 30 and maybe on the downhill of his career. This seems like a low impact type of move, not something to get too excited about. Maybe this means more opportunities for younger players or room for a better free agent.
  20. I'd offer Broxton, Harrison, and Ortiz. They could some outfield help and Ortiz is a good SP prospect. I'd hate to lose Harrison/Ortiz but you got to give up talent to get talent. Stroman is primed for a year 27 breakout season.
  21. Obviously if we have the Kershaw's, Sale, etc then that is the way to build a rotation. But if we are going to try to make Arrieta or Lance Lynn that #1 starter and pay through the teeth, then I'd rather try something different. Those guys just scream Garza all over again. Say we go with Hader, F. Peralta, T. Williams in multi inning roles with SP's that give us 4-5 solid innings. Assuming those relievers are effective, that could be the type of thing a small market team is going to need to do to be successful. There is a lot of IF's in that and probably asking for too much for all those guys to be effective right away, but it would be interesting to try. The Brewers have a ton of pitchers that fall under the "#4 SP or really good reliever" label. This may be the time to try this out.
  22. Depends on the perceived value of Bandy vs Susac. IF DFA's now, I think Susac would clear waivers but Bandy would be claimed.
  23. I don't think the bullpen can consistently go 4-5 innings every game and be effective over a 162 game season. You need your starter to get into the 6th inning or later occasionally to give the bullpen a break. Unless CC starts to use the bullpen differently with a lot of multiple inning outings be the bullpen (like Hader did). That means we need a "really" good and unique bullpen.
  24. I'm really surprised they kept Vogt. His defense was really bad, though Bandy was not much better. I guess the lefthanded bat was really valuable to the Brewers. Gotta believe this means Susac is gone. I'd be surprised if they go into the rule 5 draft with a full 40 man roster. They will want to clear a roster spot for either other waiver claims or a rule 5 pick. My guess is either Baker or Susac goes.
  25. If a team really wanted Wren they could probably trade for him. I doubt the Brewers would ask for much and they have excess OFs. If he was traded and then added to their 40 man they would have 3 option years. Much more flexibility than having to carry him on the 25 man all year.
