  1. Seems odd to promote Sanchez from A+ all the way to AAA. Olczak or Griep or any of the SP at AA would have made more sense. Wonder if this means the Brewers value Sanchez higher than we think.
  2. If they have to use Suter in long relief due to a short start, they have F.Peralta on the 40 man. His regular turn in the rotation is Saturday, so they could hold him back and have him start for us on Sunday. He's pitched well this year. I can dream.
  3. Hiura's OPS is .778. That does not seem like raking to me. I agree with FTC, I don't see him getting called up in 2018. They would start his clock way too early and have not tested his defense/arm in the minors enough. If we need infielder help we have these players to choose from - all of whom are raking (OPS): AAA Orf (.932) Dubon (.922) Blanco (.884) AA Moore (.958) CS inflates the numbers significantly but those guys have over 100 OPS greater than Hiura.
  4. Do we know what held up Perrin? Was he hurt?
  5. I find Drake intriguing. His K-rates are impressive. Anyone with his ability to miss bats is going to get opportunities. However, he is out of options and only marginally effective. He has some serious "command" issues. He has too many mistake pitches whether that means the pitch is not placed in the right spot or not enough break on the ball. When he misses, he gets hit hard. Evidenced by his 800 OPS against this year and last. He also has a high BABIP against (approaching .400) which could mean he just has bad luck or could mean that is his normal. He either strikes people out or gets hit. At this point Stearns is able to shuffle the roster around to keep Drake on the roster. I dont mind Taylor Williams and Houser shuffling between majors and AAA, because I dont want those guys being overworked too much. Both are still recovering from injury so fewer innings is fine by me. At some point he is going to need Drake's roster spot. That may happen when Boone comes back or it may be when one of these promising young pitchers shows they need to stay in the majors.
  6. There are a few names not on your eligible list. Tyrone Taylor, Missaki, Coulter, Orf, Wren. Of that I would think Taylor would at least be in the top 16 players you are considering. If he continues, he may need to be protected. Missaki would be a long shot but if he had a good year, he could be considered. I had high hopes for Coulter but at this point, he looks like a bust.
  7. Jeffress has really been impressive in this short season so far. I would not mind him getting a few save opportunities.
  8. Peralta has more to prove in the minors. He needs to harness his control. Guerra is what he is. I'm guessing Guerra will get the start.
  9. This was a bad signing from the start. Glad they realized their mistake before the season began.
  10. No surprise there. Drake next? I can only hope
  11. Have we considered that Cobb has not signed with us because he doesn't want to come here? Its amazing to me that this has not gotten done yet. I suppose it could still be the money but with the others signing so cheap it seems Cobb would have followed by now.
  12. A- 1.Hiura B+ 2.Burnes 3.Woodruff 4.Phillips B 5.Ortiz 6.T.Lutz 7.F. Peralta 8.T.Grisham B- 9.Erceg 10.Ray 11.Dubon 12.T. 13. Except that the Brewers don't need to trade him with an option still remaining. No need to just give him away so hopefully they get a couple of lottery tickets at least.
  14. Definitely short on OFs in the low minors. I hope we don't have to rely on R.Aguilar as a starter in Carolina. He was horrible in WI. I think Wes Wilson might get a significant amount of playing time in RF. We have already seen him play there this spring. Surprised the Brewers didn't sign a minor lg FA to fill a spot or two. I also think Nottingham will be in AAA. He could put up a monster year there. That will allow McDowell, Hummel and Houle to man AA and Feliciano, Ghelfi in A+.
  15. How can you tell he has elite like defense based on the few games he has played in. I've watched and he may be but that kind of evaluation takes at least a half season or longer to evaluate IMO.
  16. I think you listed the top possibilities, though a Hader-like impact might be asking for too much. That debut was amazing. I'd say Taylor has the best chance. His stuff is just nasty. Houser can really get it up there. Lopez and Peralta are probably more like solid long relievers. Bickford and Ponce could get a callup and have a chance to be dominating. Both have to be added at year's end to protect them from Rule 5, so it is not out of the question they could get a callup this year if they dominate. Longer shots are Medieros and Pennington (also need to be protected). They both have nasty stuff but have not harnessed it yet. However, once they do, look out. When you start looking at this, it is not surprising the Brewers have held off on long term pitching commitments. They have a ton of prospects that should be ready late this year or next. I have not even mentioned, Ortiz, Perrin, Supak, Derby... Best group of pitching prospects I have seen since the '80s.
  17. Seems incredibly light to me. Maybe considering they DFA'd him, its better than nothing. But Hudson is not good. A WHIP around 1.4 the last three years. That's a lot of baserunners. No Thanks. I hope this does not give an indication of what Santana's market is. Santana is the better hitter and has more years of control but still. I am underwhelmed by the return for Dickerson.
  18. I imagine the talk with Braun went something like this...
  19. I think Lutz might end up being a B, but I agree with the others. Note the 25 C+ players. That is still a very deep org.
  20. I would be surprised to see the Brewers break camp with 13 hitters. I think they will go with 8 relievers. Meaning Broxton/Phillips will likely be optioned and Aguilar will be traded. Unless Santana or Thames gets traded or the Brewers decide they only need 4 SP to start the season (I have not checked to see how many off days they have), I don't see it happening any other way.
  21. KATOH is stats driven. It does not take into account scout eval. It's just a data point just like any other evaluation tool. However, it is an important one for Brewer fans since it appears Stearns uses KATOH or something similar to it in their evaluation of prospects. They have a high number of KATOH top prospects and seem to target them in trades. That said, it is clear the Brewers don't consider him as a can't miss prospect (like Arcia was). Since they are in a win now (or win sooner) mode, it makes sense for them to look for a 2B upgrade. My guess is that they have not signed anyone yet since they don't want to sign a long term contract. With Dubon and Hiura in the minors, there is no point in blocking them with an aging vet. Personally, I think Dubon will be at best a superutility guy at best. Hiura, on the other hand, I think will be a star.
  22. With Spring Training almost here and many pitchers still available, I decided to go through the list of potential FAs to see if there may be some hidden gems to upgrade the swingman role that Gallardo was supposedly signed for. - Suffice it to say, I was not a fan of his signing. I separated out the obvious top starters and focused on the lesser known guys. I was quite surprised by the list of poor performing SPs, so much so, that the Gallardo signing is not looking too bad anymore. Well, here is what I found: Upgrade or bounce back candidate: J.Vargas, Buchholz, B. Norris, Nolasco Slight Upgrade: Cashner (not a fan due to low Ks), Cahill, H. Santiago, E. Volquez, J. Garcia, Hellickson The first four would be a clear upgrade IMO although are older. That could be a benefit if we don't have to give a multiyear contract to any of them. I have not heard many people bring up their names as possible targets. What do you think? The others would probably be an upgrade but may not be worth it if they cannot be signed to a comparable contract. You also have to compare these to Guerra, Wilkerson, Suter, and Woodruff (assuming we add a frontline starter yet). Not sure if the roster spot is worth signing any of them
  23. I guess this would test how good Arcia's range is. He is going to need to cover far more than just SS if Braun is at 2B. Can he cover 2B as well?
  24. Agreed. Lathund's post sums up my thoughts perfectly. I keep going back and forth on how I feel about this trade. It's hard to lose all that potential, but that is all it is at this point. This is really all about risk management. Stearns traded high risk (high reward) prospects for a known, young commodity. The intent is an upgrade of talent in the short term with long term stability. This is still consistent with Stearns motto of obtaining young controllable talent. The farm is still extremely deep but the top of it just got a major haircut. We cannot sustain another of these though. The Cain signing is a headscratcher though. 5 years is just too long, but obviously he sees something that I don't. But Cain is not young and while he is now controlled through 5 years, will not be cheap. And I like Cain, but still...
