  1. What the hell IS luck then? Uncertainty is not knowing something. Luck usually refers to a positive random event. That would be good luck. Luck itself simply refers to unanticipated events or circumstances that operate for or against an individual.
  2. I don't think this will end up being a good deal by any means. I don't blame them for doing it though. If Hart wasn't already on the Brewers, and we signed him as a free agent to this contract in the offseason, I think most would dislike the signing. We'll get some production out of him, but we'll wish we could spend that $10 million elsewhere in 2013.
  3. Does Brewers management have any understanding of probability? At all? CoolStandings.com has our playoff odds at 0.3%. We are as out of the race as it gets. It's one thing if the offers aren't right, but if the official position of the team is "we are competing" then my opinion is finally waning on them.
  4. Just kicked the crap out of Charter over the phone. Got some fees waved (~$150), earned a free internet upgrade for the troubles, and kicked a bunch of channels included in the "2-year promotional deal" we had to cut our monthly bill by nearly 40%. And we deserved it. They just suck as a company, in my experience.
  5. It is impressive, of course, whenever a 20 year old is doing well at Double-A or higher. But I think the boards are a bit too bullish on Lawrie. He definitely has the talent to be an everyday starter in the majors eventually, that's not a question. But a "hitting savant"? That sets the bar extremely high. Lawrie has a lot of work to do yet. Minorleaguespits.com and FirstInning.com has his LD% at an anemic 11%. That's not how you overcome a very average .2 K/PA rate. That combo normally puts your batting average in the low .200's. Not to say that he won't improve, but he doesn't appear as over-advanced for a 20 year old as it seems on the surface. I think Weeks definitely had more potential coming up through the system. Weeks looked to be a .300+ hitter with consistent 30-to-40 HR power. His wrist injuries zapped a lot of that potential, unfortunately. I would put Lawrie's bat's ceiling at about Corey Hart. A higher .260-.290 hitter, with a decent eye, decent power, and 20+ base stealer. That's a rough description of what Weeks is now as well, but Weeks has a better eye than both. So I think Lawrie will be better as a #5 or #6 bat than a #3 or #4. Hitting .270 or .280, with an OBP about 60 points higher, 20+ HR power (maybe a peak year or two with 30-to-35) and 20+ steals. An All-Star appearance or three. Not bad at all, a great asset. But some seem to be expecting even more than that. He's not Ryan Braun.
  6. Was this supposed to be in blue? The guy can't bunt. He is a HORRIBLE bunter. He's only had 8 bunt hits all year, and probably had 100+ bunt attempts. Yes, once in awhile is fine, but he can't bunt the ball fair even half of the time, so it's really not worth it for him to be bunting unless the IF is playing back. He's 8 for 20 on the year in bunt attempts. That's a .400 / .400 / .400 / .800 line when he bunts. And that's in line with his minor league numbers. So bunt away, Carlos.
  7. I also don't understand the defense issues...I know around here Edmonds was ripped over and over before the season regarding his bad defense. Now somehow he's good at defense? I don't get that at all... It's a product of sample size, I believe. His UZR shows that of the balls hit to him, he has done an above average job. But, it could be because of lucky positioning, the balls hit to him having less spin than normal, or more balls being hit near him where's he's better than most, rather than on the fringe of his range where his age really shows. Those are all things that would even out and drag down his UZR. The opposite of all those factors could have been true last season, resulting in a worse than true-talent UZR. Most likely, he's somewhere in between.
  8. Made this: http://www.wordle.net/show/wrdl/2235249/Milwaukee_Brewers Size of name correlates to the players' runs created with the Brewers.
  9. Wow, great purchase.
  10. I'll jump in before the lock... so you agree that the US should pull out of Iraq, Afghanistan, and everywhere else we occupy? I mean, we aren't a part of those governments, we don't have a right to influence their affairs.
  11. I disagree completely with Cano, and I think he has a crappy attitude about it. In this country, everyone's opinion matters, and it will make a difference.
  12. Here's a great picture of the park out to CF. The tree in question is the one slightly to the right of center, but as you can see there was simply no CF fence... fair territory goes all the way back to that barrier that guards a railroad track. http://www.digitalballparks.com/SouthAsc/Ponce_-_Behind_The_Net_V2T_-_Ted_Jones.jpg Source -> includes more pics
  13. Crap, maybe I shouldn't have given the type of tree. My next hint was all queued up, too: Everyone agreed the tree was very fair, and while some probably thought unfair was a better description, nobody would have called it a foul tree. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Nice work, trwi.
  14. It's a Magnolia tree, but that probably won't help you.
  15. This tree is notable for its location. I would say former location, but the tree hasn't moved, just everything around it has changed. It used to be located somewhere trees are almost never located, in fact this might have been the only one, at least in the 20th century.
  16. It is this specific tree. There is a plaque underneath it.
  17. BTW, "I'm famous for something" might be misleading. In fact, it's not very famous in the present time at all. It isn't known because of an event, that will be my hint.
  18. This one might be tough. http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d175/sbrylski06/1.jpg I'm famous for something...
  19. As a reminder to everyone, there's a budding fantasy football forum for this BrewerFan community over at the football sister site, LambeauLeap.net. Also, my league needs some new blood. Almost all of the people in the league are from BrewerFan. It's a little different and more in depth than your average league (contracts, auctions) but we stressed simplicity when creating the rulebook, so don't worry about being overwhelmed. We are entering our third season. Here's the link over at the LL.net forums, where you can find more information: Contract Fantasy Football.
  20. Prediction... The Dutch sneak a goal in during the first half to match Spain's early strike, but Spain gets another one early in the second half and hold possession for much of the second half, winning 2-1 and appearing to dominate for much of the match.
  21. It is possible to stop playing Civ at a reasonable time of night with some self control. (Thank god they added a clock to the interface...) I've never played Civ on the console before so I can't compare directly, but for the PC, they do a great job of allowing for multiple strategies to playing the game. What I mean by that is there are a lot of different ways of running a successful nation, with the catch being the simpler the method the lower the difficulty level you need to play at. So you can approach Civ for the PC with a a real simple strategy, a lot of micro management things running on auto so you don't have to deal with them, and still have a very enjoyable game on one of the lower to mid difficulty levels. But as you play, you will find ways to unlock a little more commerce here, a little more production there, a little bit more optimization everywhere... and gradually climb the difficultly levels. In other words, you shouldn't be overwhelmed, at least after playing through a game or two.
  22. Or the Sacramento River Cats.
  23. Yeah, I can't believe people celebrate the HofG. If that was a defining moment of my national team, I'd be extremely embarrassed. I'll be pulling for the two nations still left that haven't won a World Cup yet - Netherlands and Spain. Though at the same time, I'd like to see a final match between two teams from different continents, so I wouldn't mind a Uruguay-Spain final either. The team I don't want to win is Germany. I'm still mad about 2002 -
