  1. lorenzo cain is expected to play tomorrow.
  2. Why wouldn't they keep Phillips and option one of our many AAAA relief pitchers? because the brewers really don't have that many "aaaa" relief pitchers to option.
  3. i imagine there's a sign in the visitors' clubhouse: do not argue and do not get ejected today. the brewers are very, very, very thin on positional players today, with lorenzo cain and manny pina likely unavailable, and brett phillips optioned. hoping guerra can go seven or eight in a blowout victory.
  4. j.j. hoover designated for assignment. brett phillips optioned. junior guerra and jorge lopez both recalled. if either guerra or lopez spend the rest of the season with the club or on the major league disabled list, each will preserve their sole remaining option, as they will have spent less than 20 days optioned. the roster is at 39 players.
  5. j.j. hoover has been designated for assignment. the brewers have seven days to trade, release or outright him to the minor leagues.
  6. the brewers have talked about having flexibility in the back end of their bullpen. when you look at it, there isn't as much flexibility as one would think (assuming that no players are dfa'd). when a player is optioned, he has to spend at least 10 days optioned, unless replacing a player placed on the disabled/paternity/bereavement/restricted list. thus, someone like adrian houser, who was optioned 9 april, is off limits for an overworked bullpen. if taylor williams is optioned today for junior guerra, he's off limits for 10 days. it's conceivable that the brewers could option brett phillips for guerra, and then option guerra and recall jorge lopez (the only true reliever on the 40-man eligible to be recalled barring a disabled list move). of course, that would mean guerra is off limits for 10 days. management and fans will also have to take note of this when boone logan is ready to come off the disabled list, and again for corey knebel. relievers on the 40-man and number of remaining options: jacob barnes (2) oliver drake (0) josh hader (2) adrian houser (1) dan jennings (0) jeremy jeffress (0) j.j. hoover (0) corey knebel (1) boone logan (unclear on remaining options, but if he does have an option, he can refuse the minor league assignment, void his contract and become a free agent) jorge lopez (1) taylor williams (2)
  7. gallardo was signed to a major league deal, which meant that he took up a spot on the 40-man roster that could've gone to another player.
  8. vogt is pleased with his progress in his throwing program.
  9. suter's next turn in the rotation would come up 16 april. woodruff was optioned 7 april. woodruff falls short of the 10-day minimum stay in the minors to pitch on 16 april. granted, wednesday's starter could pitch on four days' rest on 16 april, and it may be possible for woodruff to be recalled on 17 april to start. i can't recall the specifics of when the 10-day clock starts.
  10. his stay won't be long. a starting pitcher is needed wednesday. aaron wilkerson is injured. marcos diplan, junior guerra and freddy peralta are the remaining starter options on the 40-man. of the three, only guerra has major league experience. adrian houser has to stay down 10 days. so does brandon woodruff. if optioned, taylor williams would have to stay down 10 days. the only other relievers on the 25-man that could be optioned are jacob barnes and josh hader, and neither of those moves are happening. at this point, jorge lopez is the only reliever on the 40-man that could be recalled in case another guy struggles.
  11. and just like that, brett phillips is recalled. barring an injury to another player, i'd be surprised to see him stay past tuesday.
  12. adrian houser was optioned back to aa-biloxi after today's game. a corresponding roster move will be made before the start of tomorrow's game in st. louis.
  13. with adrian houser optioned today and a starting pitcher not needed until wednesday, it's very conceivable that the brewers would recall either keon broxton or brett phillips just to have more outfield depth for the next couple of games.
  14. yes. and if he were to clear waivers, because this would be the first time that a club would wishing to outright him off the 40-man roster to the minor leagues, he would be forced to accept the minor league assignment and remain property of the brewers.
  15. correct. disadvantage to williams was that he had pitched the day before. houser had yet to pitch in the young minor league season. technically, hoover was not recalled. he had his contract selected. only players optioned to the minor leagues can be recalled.
  16. per this report, vogt could be close to starting a rehab assignment. we'll know more next week.
  17. of note: after today's game, any player optioned in spring training will have met the 10-day minimum requirement to stay optioned to the minor leagues. thus, it will not take an injury to bring someone up to start wednesday's game.
  18. woodruff optioned. he must stay optioned at least 10 days, unless replacing a player put on the disabled, paternity, bereavement or restricted list. his turn in the rotation comes up wednesday, with an off day scheduled thursday.
  19. j.j. hoover has his contract selected. to make room on the 25-man roster, brandon woodruff was optioned. if woodruff spends more than 20 days optioned, he will burn his second option. to make room for hoover on the 40-man, tyler webb was designated for assignment. if the brewers outright him to the minor leagues, he will not have burned his 2018 (second option). hoover is out of minor league options. the 40-man roster remains full.
  20. j.j. hoover has his contract selected. he is out of minor league options.
  21. i would be shocked if houser remains with the club for more than a few days. the brewers are just waiting for a better option that's rested.
  22. obvious recall candidates would be j.j. hoover (would need spot on the 40-man), jorge lopez or taylor williams. all three pitched yesterday. tyler webb didn't pitch yesterday, and could be recalled for just one game, and then optioned down, with one of the three aforementioned guys taking his place. it'd be a gamble, but the brewers could also recall one of keon broxton or brett phillips just for a day for outfield depth, but that could be taxing on the bullpen--especially if brandon woodruff can't go deep tonight.
  23. six games in, and the rotation is certainly a glaring weakness. the starters need to get to six to seven innings (at least) in all four games vs. the cubs. there's no way that this bullpen can shoulder the workload.
