  1. wade miley is nearing the end of a flat-throwing program with biloxi. he may start throwing from the mound next week.
  2. perhaps down the road, dave parker and willie randolph will be given consideration by the modern baseball era committee. parker certainly has a more impressive resume.
  3. except Franklin will be catching I know ... which is odd considering the team seems to have better catching depth than 3B depth in the upper minors. nick franklin is ticketed for aa biloxi, not aaa colorado springs.
  4. newly signed andres blanco will man the hot corner for colorado springs.
  5. dan jennings signing is official. he is out of options. to make room on the 40-man roster for jennings, jimmy nelson, who had been placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to 26 march, was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. ji-man choi was optioned to colorado springs. if he spends more than 20 days optioned in 2018, he will enter 2019 spring training with no remaining minor league options. the 40-man roster is full.
  6. the term optional assignment is pretty misleading. it's from the team's perspective, not the player's. had choi not been added to the 40-man roster, he could've opted out on two different dates. he'd still have a minor league option remaining, which as we saw in the case of keon broxton, can end up working against you. thus, any team that signed him to a minor league deal could keep him off the 40-man roster, and upon adding him, could keep his minor league option preserved if they did not option him, or kept him optioned for 20 days or fewer in 2018. this is obviously easier to do as the season wears on (especially in august, right before rosters expand in september). if choi ends up being optioned, i'm certain he'll be celebrating when 20 days have passed, because then he'll enter 2019 spring training without any options, which typically forces a team's hand to keep him. so, slight advantage to choi in that he gets a higher salary as a 40-man roster player in his third option year, and in that all indications are that he will burn his final option in 2018.
  7. dan jennings has no minor league options remaining.
  8. if the signing of dan jennings indeed becomes official, the brewers will need to open up a spot on their 40-man roster. jimmy nelson could be a candidate to be transferred to the 60-day disabled list. the club could backdate it, although it's unclear on how far back. (it should be noted that cleveland placed cody anderson on the 60-day disabled list on 25 february to make room for a waiver claim.) if concerned about preserving depth on the 40-man roster when it's time for jimmy nelson to be activated, i'm sure the brewers are counting on stephen vogt returning to action by that time, if not before then. the brewers are not going to carry three catchers on their 25-man roster (at least not for very long). thus, one of vogt, jett bandy or manny pina will have to be removed from the 40-man roster, which would open up a spot for jimmy nelson's return.
  9. ji-man choi has his contract selected and is added to the 25-man roster. he has one minor league option remaining. the 40-man roster is now full.
  10. adam mccalvy reports that choi has one minor league option remaining.
  11. reported here that the deadline is 10:30 am central tomorrow.
  12. the brewers have released yovani gallardo. the roster is at 39.
  13. reported here that the latter opt-out date is 15 may, not 15 june.
  14. barring an outside move, jacob barnes makes the opening day roster.
  15. bethancourt has been told that he will not make the opening day roster.
  16. nick franklin has been told that he will not make the major league roster.
  17. if gallardo makes the club, it will be as a reliever. gallardo will not be on the opening day roster for the brewers. brandon woodruff makes the bullpen but will be used as the fifth starter.
  18. brent suter has been named a starter for game three in san diego.
  19. no surprises here with the optioning of keon broxton and brett phillips.
  20. catcher dustin houle returned to minor league camp. down to eight non-roster invitees still in big league camp.
  21. keon broxton, junior guerra and brett phillips all have been optioned to the minor leagues. assuming each spends at least 20 days optioned to the minors once the major league season starts next week, they will each burn their option. broxton and guerra could be burning their final options. phillips could be burning his second option.
  22. slight groin tear for wade miley. unknown how this affects his roster status and future with the organization, as the 40-man roster is currently full and one of the projected openings via catcher elimination won't be happening before opening day.
