  1. ariel pena accepted his minor league assignment and remains in the organization. he had the right to refuse the assignment and declare free agency.
  2. khris davis leads the majors in strikeouts. he has 13 in 23 at-bats.
  3. pena was outrighted to colorado springs. he has three days to accept the assignment or elect free agency.
  4. fans should take note that junior guerra started tonight's game against aaa memphis and pitched six innings, surrendering two runs and striking out eight. it's a curious move to see him stretched out as a starter, but it makes sense when you consider that the brewers bullpen only has two players with options, whereas three of the current four-man rotation can be optioned (and likely four of the five if zach davies takes the fifth spot).
  5. from browsing the 2016 media guide . . . ramon flores got his first major league hit on 31 may 2015 in oakland with a single off jesse chavez. scooter gennett got his first major league hit on 5 june 2013 vs. oakland with a single off jesse chavez.
  6. freeman is in the same boat as pena, as he's out of options and has been outrighted to the minor leagues once before. if the brewers try to send freeman to the minor leagues, he has the right to declare free agency also.
  7. anyone getting wtmj feed via brewers.com? i can get knbr, but no wtmj.
  8. expected formalities: sean nolin and yhonathan barrios to the 60-day disabled list to open up spots for blaine boyer and chris capuano. the 40-man roster remains full.
  9. one has to wonder if the options game will work against taylor jungmann, chase anderson, michael blazek or corey knebel in 2016 if the brewers intend to give pena a long leash. any of the former can be optioned; pena cannot . . . and he has an advantage of being able to step in to the starting rotation.
  10. rymer liriano transferred to the 60-day disabled list to open up a roster spot for the newly signed carlos torres. the 40-man roster remains full.
  11. when boyer is added to the 25-man roster, he will have a base salary of $950,000.
  12. tom haudricourt reports that middlebrooks could've opted out now, but chose to accept assignment to colorado springs. this varies from what heyman reported above.
  13. So by that logic, Brew4U, is it right to think you're saying they should keep Nieuwenhuis? brew4u likely mixed up minor league assignments and optional minor league assignments and likely intended to state: if presley can be assigned to the minor leagues more easily, then pick nieuwenhuis. presley can indeed be easily assigned to the minor leagues. he signed a minor league contract, and that's how minor league contracts work. because he has less than six years of major league service time, mlb did not mandate that his minor league contract include an opt-out date. presley could have negotiated an opt-out date on his own that we are not aware of, but a player of his caliber likely couldn't leverage that.
  14. one has the wonder if the main reason why capuano made the team is because the brewers are concerned about the poor showings of wily peralta and chase anderson this spring. an early exit for either starter (they will be back-to-back starters by game 5) puts a huge toll on the other projected long guy (ariel pena or tyler cravy).
  15. presley has no minor league options remaining. if the brewers add him to their 25-man roster and then try to outright him to the minor leagues, presley can refuse the assignment (as he's been outrighted before) and declare free agency. nieuwenhuis is in the same boat. out of minor league options, and he's already been outrighted once. if the brewers try to outright him a second time, nieuwenhuis can declare free agency.
  16. perez remains in the brewers' organization, but he will start the season without a spot on the 40-man (and 25-man) roster.
  17. walsh has been told he's made the 25-man roster. looking forward to seeing what he can do.
  18. despite being released today, the brewers could try to re-sign morales to a new minor league deal. he could've been released to avoid paying him a $100,000 retention bonus.
  19. young likely just fell short of six years of major league service time; otherwise his contract would've mandated an opt-out date. he's ticketed to colorado springs. it should be noted that if he appears in the big leagues this year, he'll likely get that service time bump and would qualify as an article xx(b) free agent for 2017 (and thus would earn an opt-out date if signed to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training). this, of course, could be all moot if article xx(b) is changed in the new collective bargaining agreement.
  20. so much for that. zack jones made his cactus league debut today. any backdated disabled list appearance would have to start 25 march.
  21. not sure if we'll ever learn why jimenez didn't make it to arizona. it looks like he won't be part of the brewers' plans moving forward . . .
  22. after being shut down, the brewers announced that jones was finally going to see action in a major league game, but then had him pitch in a minor league game instead. if a player appears in a major league spring training game, his disabled list assignment cannot be backdated prior to that game's date. one has to wonder if the brewers are planning on having jones open the season on the disabled list, but taking advantage of backdating it and placing him on the 60-day disabled list to open up a roster spot?
  23. article xx(b) free agents that sign minor league deals are automatically granted opt-out clauses. to be an article xx(b) free agent, one must have at least six years of major league service time. will middlebrooks does not have sufficient service time, so if there's an opt-out clause, it wasn't mandated by the collective bargaining agreement. middlebrooks would have had to negotiate for an opt-out clause when he signed his contract.
  24. ahhhhh . . . we had such high hopes for this guy.
