  1. further clarification on removing replacement players from the 40-man roster after original active roster players placed on the special covid-19 related injured list during an outbreak are cleared to return to the 40-man: it's my understanding that in bypassing outright waivers, it does not become an outright assignment. thus, service time of five years or more and/or having already accepted an outright assignment previously should have no bearing on that player's ability to refuse being reassigned to the minor leagues again. and, because it's not an outright assignment, it will not count as having already accepted an outright assignment in a player's career. remember, when a player clears outright waivers for the first time in his career to be assigned to the minor leagues, he cannot refuse the assignment. but any subsequent attempt to outright a player who clears waivers allows the player to become a free agent if he so chooses. i'm drawing these conclusions because mlb has specifically stated that outright waivers are not required to return a covid-19 replacement player to the minor leagues. by making it a point to not call it an outright assignment, they're clearly stating that the rules are different. i'll be paying attention to the roster status of the washington nationals replacement players to see if i'm wrong on this.
  2. please read this thread.
  3. j.p. feyereisen will be in the opening day bullpen.
  4. billy mckinney makes the opening day roster.
  5. player transactions will be different in 2021, however. replacement players for the nationals are not subject to outright waivers to remove them from the 40-man roster, once the original players are cleared to return. the change to not require outright waivers during a covid outbreak is pretty significant. it basically allows a club to yo-yo any player from its alternate training site back and forth without having to worry about putting him on outright waivers to return him to the minor leagues. for example, with a brewers covid outbreak, the club could bring up non-roster players such as garrett mitchell, ray black and zack godley to replace players on the special covid-19 injured list. they get added to the 40-man, taking up the spots vacated by the covid-19 players. when the covid-19 players are activated, the club can just return those replacements to the minor leagues/alternate training site and remove them from the 40-man roster without exposing them to another team to claim.
  6. five washington nationals players will miss opening day due to one of them testing positive, and the others requiring to quarantine due to close contact with the positive tester.
  7. I think Devin Williams and Rasmussen would still qualify this year. I thought the cutoff was 130 AB or 50 IP which they are both under. you might have missed this thread, or missed the cover of this year's media guide.
  8. he has yet to be placed on optional assignment.
  9. with at least one player set to hit the injured list, any player on the 40-man is game to make the opening day roster, even if he's already been optioned. out-of-options mckinney seems more likely than an arm, given that jackie bradley, jr. and lorenzo cain both ended camp without a lot of plate appearances/fielding time after injury shutdowns, given that a 40-man spot is currently open, and given that the brewers have hinted at 14 position players given the number of days off in the first weeks of the season.
  10. interesting comment from craig counsell about getting angel perdomo in an exhibition game in a major league stadium with 10,000+ fans: "the angel perdomo situation was just what we wanted — to put him in there against a couple good hitters and get him some experience with the crowd and everything like that." i took this in that perdomo cracks the opening day roster, makes an appearance, and then a non-roster player comes in to take his place. maybe it's brad boxberger, maybe it's an outside acquisition.
  11. that already happened to accommodate selecting the contract of travis shaw and signing jackie bradley, jr.
  12. as mentioned above, any optioned brewer can be recalled to replace a player yet to be placed on the injured list.
  13. ray black was released in 2017 by san francisco after they designated him for assignment. looking at his transaction profile, they never placed him on outright waivers. this is the first time that black has been placed on outright waivers, so he was forced to accept the minor league assignment after clearing waivers.
  14. Thank god! Boxberger will make the OD bullpen then. It would seem so, but it also wouldn't be unlike the Brewers to pull a fast one and give Feyereisen or Perdomo those 26-man spots, or scour the cuts today and tomorrow to add someone. perdomo can only make the opening day roster if a player is placed on the injured list. otherwise, he has to meet the requisite stay of at least 10 days optioned, with the clock starting opening day. considering that the brewers have at least three players intended to be placed on the injured list, the brewers could opt to recall three optioned players for opening day, and then option them after game one as i've suggested above.
  15. ray black has cleared outright waivers and thus, is removed from the 40-man roster. the roster is at 39 players.
  16. ray black has cleared outright waivers and will be assigned to the alternate training site in wisconsin. if added back to the 40-man roster, he will remain out of options. he is eligible for minor league free agency at the end of this season.
  17. confirmed exhibition series at american family field against the white sox alternate training site roster during the brewers' first road trip.
  18. t-mobile tuesdays is offering a free mlb.tv subscription for a limited time starting today. probably only advantageous for fans outside of their team's blackout market--but worth it for watching other teams and getting gameday audio.
  19. i'm all for adding boxberger to the bullpen, but i suggest here why it shouldn't be opening day.
  20. to my point above, we know that marathon extra-inning games are unlikely with a runner leading off each half-inning at second base, and we also know about the three-batter-minimum rule. the brewers won't be using all of their pitchers on opening day.
  21. there's actually a way for the brewers to open with 15 position players if they plan to add brad boxberger to the bullpen. assume billy mckinney makes the club as the 14th position player. the brewers could place justin topa on the 10-day injured list, and recall luke maile to take his place (or add a player yet to be optioned, such as tyrone taylor). the brewers then opt to use other bullpen arms ahead of brad boxberger. when they decide that they need a fresh arm, they option the 15th position player (who then must remain down for at least 10 days), transfer topa to the 60-day injured list to open up a 40-man spot, and select the contract of boxberger. this could happen as soon as saturday before game two. as mentioned earlier, any player on a minor league contract isn't bound by a requisite stay of 10 days on optional assignment. i suggested luke maile because it gives the club a defensive replacement if daniel vogelbach, for example, pinch hits for one of catchers. the downside is that the 15th position player is then off-limits for 10 days after being optioned, unless replacing an injured player.
  22. lopes will remain in arizona while on the 60-day injured list.
  23. mathias is choosing rehab over surgery and will remain in arizona.
  24. drew rasmussen makes the opening day bullpen.
