  1. The one-game playoff is the deal breaker for me, I agree with those who think it's terrible. It just feels way too random, and even feels sloppy and poorly thought out. If the non-divisional winner with the best record and the non-divisional winner with the second best record are close to each other in record, they're already in a virtual playoff (albeit against other teams) in the final days of the season. That doesn't need to be improved upon. And if those two teams are not close in their records, they shouldn't be playing a 1-game elimination game that risks knocking out the team with the better record on a single fluke game. Maybe they should consider doing something crazy like spotting one team with as many runs as they have games up on the other team. Too gimmicky and silly for MLB, I suppose, but I think a 1-game playoff is right up there in the gimmick department anyways. Horrible.
  2. Sounds like the minority, but I like the gold -- would go better with black/navy pants. New, clean, consistent jerseys are long overdue, so I'm up for the added cost this year.
  3. The word "technicality" really needs to be disassociated from this story. I think I first saw it in an ESPN article this evening, and then it was rampant in the article's responses and other comments I've seen elsewhere. From what we know so far, it would appear that this isn't some lucky loophole like a form that required three signatures only having two or something like that, it sounds like a legitimate issue with the testing process that very well might have been the whole root of positive result in the first place. That's not a technicality. If my car fails an emissions test, but only because the tester at the DMV ran my car at 6,000 RPMs instead of the required 1,000 RPMs (leading to 20 times the level of pollutants they've ever seen before), who on earth would call it a technicality that they let me pass after ackowledging their mistake? It will be fantastic if more news comes out to the effect that Braun's side was able to show how a test sample could easily spike in testosterone if improperly handled for over a weekend in some courier's care. It would help a little bit with the public image, although sadly not do much for the majority who have heard nothing but the words "steroids", "suspension", and "technicality" from ESPN.
  4. Makes me think of Seinfeld. "Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I'm sorry, I'm gonna have to plead ignorance, because if I had known that sort of thing was frowned upon..."
  5. John 19:30 ...It is finished... Whew. EDIT: It doesn't feel right to celebrate knowing that Braun's rep has still been trashed by this whole ordeal, but obviously that was going to happen in either outcome so there's joy in the outcome that doesn't involve suspension. And maybe some micro-fraction of public perception will be swayed away from thinking he cheated due to the exoneration.
  6. Yep, saw that. Sounds good to me. I should be renewing our team this week, then we'll hopefully do player cards and square up on fees at some practices closer to the season.
  7. Welcome back, Robin19! Puts us up to 11 guys already committed, very nice.
  8. This year's renewal paperwork from the rec department mentions "aluminum bat" in a couple places. For 2012, there are two 10-week "Aluminum Bat Leagues" playing at Wick and Juneau, looks like they're new for 2012. Then, on the renewal form, there's a questionnaire of, "Are you in favor of our leagues using only aluminum bats effective 2013?" I have to plead ignorance, what's this about? Is this referring to strictly aluminum material instead of modern composites? Safety in mind for pitchers and infielders? Or just to prevent home run derbies?
  9. Definitely ... I knew I was forgetting someone ... I'll text him. EDIT: Drick says he's in, so 10 solid commits. Just need 2 or 3 more, we're in good shape for Feb 1!
  10. Amazing comeback win for the Preds on the road tonight at the Wild. Four unanswered goals in the last 10-ish minutes to win in regulation, three goals in the last 3.5 minutes, with the game winner coming with about 20 seconds left. Probably one of the best comebacks in the franchise's history, and best of all it was televised for us fans in WI.
  11. So weird that the camera is on the same side of the court as the benches at PSU. Always like that?
  12. nullbyte, sounds good. Let us know! Schubert is confirmed "in", so 9 solid commits. I'll also ask porter. EDIT: Porter is out ... can't do every Thursday, but said maybe as a sub if needed.
  13. Tedaldtada29 is out because of another league on Thursday night. By my count, we're at 8 confirmed, 9 if Tyler's back. Who else from last year's team are we missing? It's not too early to start asking around and finding other guys so we can have a roster of 12-ish.
  14. I don't think there's been an official BF.Net Madison team for a few years. The Milwaukee team was never directly affiliated with them, so I don't know anything about their status.
  15. I always wanted a team named the Milwaukee Talkies.
  16. Deep down? Call me crazy, but I'm feeling an all-star game appearance somewhere in his fist few years of regular action. (All it takes is a hot couple of months in the first half of a season, eh?) Or, at least some all-star buzz once or twice in the next handful of years ... maybe a snub in there instead of an appearance. Deep down, I have faith in Mat the Batt. Can't wait to see him in the lineup this year ... quick hands, pure stroke, good eye ... I'm expecting to be pleased. I can envision him as a long term solution and not just a temporary gap filler. Deep down, I think the only thing standing in his way is consistent playing time, and it's not encouraging to hear that Hart might get his spot more than once a week. Deep down, I think that's a terrible idea, and I'm not too happy about it. EDIT: Italics for emphasis is much less obnoxious than bold. EDIT: Batt
  17. The wife's parents live in Smashville and are season ticket holders for the Preds. Her dad has had some really great things to say about Craig Smith so far. (Meanwhile, I've really heard nothing about Geoffrion lately....)
  18. For anyone who hasn't played with BF.NET before and is interested, below is some basic info. Feel free to post here or PM me with any questions, etc. - We play Thursday nights in the Bay View area. (Sijan Field) - Games rotate between 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30 start tomes - League usually starts around May 15th, lasts for 10 weeks - Weather permitting, we'll do some weekend practices the weeks leading up to our first game - It's a social league, not uber competitive - Fees are a tad steep since we fly the flag of BF.NET and don't have other sponsors ... usually works out to about $42 per person
  19. Tedaldtada29, I'm positive we'll have room. I'll send you a PM. Overall, it looks like we're already up to 8 or 9 players, so we shouldn't have too much trouble filling our roster up to 12 or 13. I can start working on the renewal.
  20. Predators on a four game winning streak, including two victories against the Blackhawks, and have won nine of their last 10. Tied for 5th in the conference with Chicago, one point off of 4th behind St Louis. Super tough stretch coming up... @MN, @Philly, vsSTL, vsVAN, @OTT, @BOS, vsCHI, @DET.
  21. Happy new year, fellas. The rec department has started mailing out the league/renewal information for the 2012 season. We have until mid-February to get in and renew. Shall we start a roll call below to make sure we're close enough to fielding a full team again this year? At first glance the fees and rules look about the same as usual. I can post more details later. 1. valpo 2.
  22. Yes, they've always been thugs. They always encouraged cocky, ghetto, in-your-face, smack-talking thuggery in their heyday, and later when they didn't have enough thugs their coach went on record to say, "we need more thugs". In the China incident, #21 (I think) from Georgetown clearly swings the first punch ... it was justice that he missed like a clown and then got smacked good in retaliation.
  23. It sounds harsh, but glad to have McGehee out the door. What misery it was suffering through his 2011 season. Getting something back vs non-tendering only matters if the return player turns out to help the team. If Veras is a flop and costs us games, we'll wish we had just non-tendered Casey and filled Veras' spot with either a better, more expensive player or a cheaper, equally crappy player. Guess we won't know until he's given the ball a number of times. I hope the team takes a hard look at Veras in spring training and isn't afraid to cut him to save paying a majority of his salary.
  24. Ugh. I couldn't wait to see Green at 3B and Gamel at 1B next year. Young, talented players and dirt cheap. Instead, we give a 35 year old a salary 10 times that of Green's ... and to a three year contract. Can't wait to watch old man Ramirez' decline ... gonna love that lazy attitude, bum shoulders, and slowing bat speed for the next three years of my Brewers fandom! I'm sure I'm being partly clouded by the fact that Aramis is a giant tool who I hate with undying passion for being a cocky jag and having one of the all-time worst "punch me in the face 'cos my ugly d-bag smirky face is asking for it" faces and I can't possibly imagine ever rooting for him, but beyond that I'm nearly certain I rationally dislike this deal from a financial standpoint, too. There's very little bang-for-the-buck here, a decent chance we'll regret the contract long before it's done, and all at the expense of playing time for the young guys and financial flexibility to spend better elsewhere. (And for the sake of adding an odious, off-putting tool of an MLB player!) This would be like the Packers signing Moss or Owens a few years ago. I'm sure some fans would be okay with anything that made it more likely the team would be better, while others (like me) would rather take our chances with players that didn't make us retch to support them. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.
  25. It just happened four months ago when the thugs of Georgetown went over to China and turned a goodwill basketball game into a major brawl. That was an equal disgrace.
