  1. Where do most people here invest? I'm looking at starting a Roth IRA to supplement my company-sponsored 401(k), and wondering if people here have invested online (which is something I'd like to do, but would like to hear any comments/suggestions). Thanks.
  2. That's good advice that even the experts follow. Warren Buffett once said he didn't invest in Enron because he didn't understand their notes to their financial statements. A book I've just started reading is a very old one that has been revised many times over the years - "The Intelligent Investor" by Ben Graham. Basically, you have to learn to keep your emotions out of investing. And you should be looking for bargains in the stock market when everyone else is running for the hills (like right now).
  3. Kind of off-topic, but it's something I've always been curious about - the t-shirts advertised on your sites seem to incorporate or copy identically well-known slogans and images that are copyrighted. Are you paying some sort of fee for their use? I'm assuming NBC Universal wouldn't be pleased with someone selling Dwight Schrute t-shirts without being paid a licensing fee, for example. (I'm honestly just curious, I'm not meaning for this to come off as some holier-than-thou rant).
  4. If the market eventually dries up for Sheets and he'll accept a one-year deal, I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees chase after him considering it would be the least cost-prohibitive (in terms of draft picks) for them than any other team besides the Brewers. I would still like to see Ben back in Milwaukee next year.
  5. Does anyone know if there is "OOTP" type game for football? NFL Head Coach wasn't that great, as I was more interested in building the franchise than I was running my team through individual practices. I like running a franchise in Madden, where I focus most of my time on offseason, and sim the actual regular season, but would like something a little more in depth.
  6. So am I the only one who had a dad who would tie a string around his kid's tooth and the other end to a door knob and told them to "hold still" while he slammed the door?
  7. My cousin (who's not the sharpest knife in the drawer), went to Russia for a church trip several years ago. I asked her if she was planning on visiting Lenin's Tomb during her trip. She gave me an incredibly puzzled look, and asked, "Why is John Lennon buried in Russia?" Back on topic - these people are either complete racists, or attention starved. Maybe both. You don't name your kid Adolph Hitler and expect that he's going to be treated normally and wonder "What's the big deal?" Not to mention the "no one else will have that name" argument is pretty weak when you're requesting that the cake also be decorated with swastikas. By the way, how ironic is it that the guy finally gets his Hitler cake at Wal-Mart but I can't buy a CD that's hasn't been edited for language?
  8. If naming your son "Sue" before skipping town results in a drunken knife fight with him 25 years later, I can't imagine what this guy is in for when his son realizes what that name represents. I'm surprised they didn't name one of their girls Jenna Cyde.
  9. Kapler's catch has been named TYIB's top play of the year. Link
  10. Are you assuming that one of Hardy or Escobar are going to be traded? Escobar had been working a bit at 2nd base, so they might have him in mind if neither is dealt.
  11. One thing to keep in mind is that it wasn't an off-the-cuff remark. It was completely premeditated, making sure he had an audience first, and even pointed at a camera and said, "Is this thing on?"
  12. I hope Sabathia wins 30 games and the Yankees finish 62-100. I didn't read the whole thread so I don't know if this has been mentioned, but how can they offer a player 60 million more than anyone else is bidding, and then turn around on the same day and ask the city of NY for 440 million funded through municipal bonds to help pay for their stadium? It's getting really hard to be a fan of this game anymore when the playing field is so lopsided. Of the top 8 teams in terms of payroll last season, 5 made the playoffs. If the Mets hadn't choked down the stretch, they would have beaten the Brewers out for the WC and that would have been 6 of the 8 teams.
  13. You mean like a string attached to a shotgun?
  14. I really feel that CC is using the Yankee's deal to get some sort of competitive offer from a team he actually wants to play for. If he had no concerns about NY, the NY media, and was truly seeking big dollars, he'd have been a Yankee for three weeks already. We may be overrating it (as much as you over underrating it), but CC is clearly concerned about it. I really think he has no intention of signing with NY unless he fails to get a decent offer from a California team. And the way it looks now, there's still a pretty good chance that CC ends up in NY if San Francisco's best offer is less than Milwaukee's, Anaheim remains in the chase for Tex, and if the Dodgers will only make an offer if "CC wants us to." (By the way, what the hell kind of negotiating tactic is that? Or at least admitting that through the media.)
  15. It didn't take long for the Giants to move on as they are on the verge of signing Renteria at long-last: Link
  16. Zachary Quinto ("Heroes"' Sylar) is playing Spock: http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV5BMTc0NTg1OTE4MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTI3ODQwMg@@._V1._SX270_SY400_.jpg I grew up watching TNG, but never really got into DS9 or anything after that. I don't think I've seen a Star Trek movie since "Generations" but I may have to check this out.
  17. I think you're right - it was brought up in an old WTMJ thread about their contract negotiations with the Brewers. And the main thing that made us nervous about the deal was the thought of losing JP.
  18. The link below it "Swindle's first strikeout" shows the 3rd pitch (a slider) in a 3 pitch strikeout of Carlos Delgado. Hopefully that's the type of situations he's put in (LOOGY) to succeed.
  19. I vote yes also. Like JJ mentioned, the "All-Play" is pretty neat. My wife and I can have a decently competitive game of Madden now. If you're looking for educational, there are a few games like Wii Music, where you can play various instruments and have tons of "games" that teach kids about basic music terminology, and the "Lego" series of video games are pretty good as well.
  20. I liked the scene of Pam at corporate on Halloween dressed as Charlie Chaplin. "I guess nobody dresses up for Halloween at corporate. I wish someone had told me before I put grease makeup on. Plus, I can't take my hat off... because then I'm Hitler."
  21. So the fact that the Brewers have focused completely on Sabathia so far this offseason doesn't even get them mentioned as a "team that has shown interest" in this article? I'm not expecting CC to sign with the Brewers, but c'mon.
  22. To echo a comment from an earlier poster, Santana wasn't a free agent. He likely would have gotten even more had he had the chance to test the open market.
  23. I'll echo what twobrewers said. Right now, the trend is that employers value job experience over an MBA for an entry level position. Articles that I have read suggest that if an employer has to choose between someone with experience and someone without experience but with an MBA, they choose experience every time. Why? Because the candidate with experience knows how things actually work, while the one with an MBA without experience doesn't. Employers will pay for experience, they probably won't pay you more because you have an MBA if you don't have any experience. Get the experience, and then go for the MBA to make you more promotable or marketable to other companies. Somewhat related - when I was in high school, we had a substitute teacher for a psychology class. How did he become a substitute teacher? He decided to go for his Master's in Education before getting any experience. He was overqualified, and no one would hire him full time so he worked in a factory.
  24. Didn't the Brewers "promote" Jack Z. last season by adding "Vice-President" or something to that effect to his title last season? I think they did throw some cash at him last season, and I would guess he is probably one of the top paid scouting directors in the league. He might be getting close to what a GM is making now. But that still doesn't make him a GM, which is obviously what he wants.
  25. Somewhat off-topic, but isn't it common for sports teams to take money received in advance like this and invest it short-term? For example, if they got $5 million in advance for playoff tickets, they would invest it - if the games never took place, they return the money to the fans but keep any gains made? I guess my point is, given the recent economic climate, it's possible the Brewers might have have lost money by asking for payment so far in advance. Just a thought.
