  1. We have two separate issues. One, the quality of Tom's reporting. Two, the way Tom conducts himself when interacting with the public. On the first point, I think that the quality of his articles are very poor. His analysis of the team and its players is generally poor and riddled with personal bias. I don't mean to suggest that he should be using advanced metrics but when he concludes that an offense averaging over 5.2 runs/game isn't doing anything special, there's a problem. As for his people skills, I can't begin to imagine acting that way while representing my employer. Yes, he has to deal with morons but often enough, he's the biggest troll on his own blog!
  2. Wow. Vegas says that the Brewers are the slight dogs this afternoon. 51% chance of losing. home field adv + Peavy being slighly better than Sheets > Brewer off. advantage
  3. Yeh, Astro fans should really be excited. They've raised their playoff chances from .2% to 1%. If they continue on this pace, they should get that up to 10% by game #180.
  4. The historic FACT that you took the division instead of some cheesey best-of-the-rest distinction. Yeh, I can't imagine another sport sinking to such a level as to have a wildcard. It's much more fair to have an 84 win team make the playoff but a 92 win team not. Every other sport is happy to make changes if they are for the better. Why do some fans think baseball should be above such things?
  5. What is an acceptable rate for a 2B to convert double plays at? I have no idea what's average, except that it's not 100%. No, I'm not trying to suggest that Weeks is even an average defensive 2B. I've been arguing for years to move him. Of course, I was advocating starting a guy there that has since changed positions twice.
  6. I got mine August 20th last year: http://rluzinski.blogspot.com/2007/08/playoffs-are-you-kidding-me.html
  7. He's one of the worst defenders in the league at a position he's played his entire professional life. It doesn't seem like a great idea to move him to 3B.
  8. a vent thread for a team 18 games over .500, hasnt been in the playoffs since 1982, seems somewhat ridiculous complaining about something and everything just for the sake of it I think it's just as ridiculous when people have to frantically look for a scapegoat after the Brewers lose, as if a team just can't be outplayed on a given day. Pretending that everything is 100% perfect when they win or 100% junk when they lose just doesn't make much sense to me. When I vent, it's a about a situation I am unhappy with and it's independent of whether they won or lost.
  9. Unless, I am missing something it is 8% for one game. There is a 54% percent chance the Brewers would win the odd game, and there is a 46% chance the Cubs would lose the odd game. Over 162 games, the 54% occurance (Brewers winning) would happen 87.48 times (162 * 54%), while the Cubs would lose 74.52 times (162 * 46%). That is a 12.96 game difference over 162 games. I think you need to reread my first post. It had to do with the fact that the Cardinals have played 2 extra games than the Brewers, and what advantage that translates into.
  10. Their goal should be to win as many games as possible in the regular season, until a playoff spot is secured. There's a decent shot that it won't happen during game #162.
  11. I love how he lists the BA/HR/RBI totals to prove that an offense averaging 5.27 runs over the sample in question isn't doing much. Hey Tom, maybe your numbers are just meaningless? As for Weeks, it's obvious that Tom has lost all objectivity in reporting about him. And you don't have to pretend Weeks is having a good year to think that, either.
  12. rluzinski, peeing in Brewerfan's collective fruit loops since March 2003. And when I don't flip out after the Brewers lose 3 or 4 games, I am accused of not being able to take my Brewer goggles off. I'm just going to look at the facts and go where they take me. I would look at 8% as a rather significant difference, in baseball. That is like the difference between a .300 hitter and a .220 hitter. While I agree with your premise that the loss column difference is overrated, by some, it is not a trivial difference that you seem to imply. That's .08 wins, not 8%. You want to call it .1 wins and I won't object. And I'm not implying anything. I'm flat out saying that a tenth of a win is trivial.
  13. Right. The Brewers have something like an expected win% of .540 for those two extra games (are they 2 extra home or away games?). The Cardinals essentially went .500 in them. .08 extra expected wins. It matters very little in baseball, since the maority of teams are pretty close to .500 in true talent. Am I looking at this wrong?
  14. I think Al is just hoping that if he keeps making that claim, over and OVER again, everyone will eventually forget the specifics of the Hart situation. Then, can finally pat himself on the back for being "right". Seems to be his M.O.
  15. Why is the loss column more important than the win column? Is it the whole, controling your own destiny thing of just the fact that they've played 2 emore games than the Brewer? The former doesn't change the odds, while the latter does, ever so slightly.
  16. TGJ may not get on base too often, nor hit for any power, but he does all the other, SUPER important things on offense, really well. Start him over KKameron in CF, have him and Counsell bat 1 and 2 and I think the offense would be fixed. All these HRs need to stop. Get back tobasics, with some hit and runs and productive outs.
  17. So this "injury" does not explain why Counsell is starting. The whole situation is just getting odd, IMO. I'm surprised that TGJ wasn't called up to start in CF.
  18. There is some logic behind putting Craig Counsell at 3B. Our entire lineup is full of hitters who strike out or crush the ball. Utility CC adds some versaitility to our line-up and creates some disruptions in the six hole. He isn't going to produce high stats, but he will battle; which is something the Brewers have been lacking this season. They haven't had anybody up there, except Prince who will battle a pitcher. Nost probably is playing for a few more hit & runs/run & hit's for his random hitter of the week. I'm sure that this is exactly the kind of thinking Yost is using to justify all these starts but it just doesn't make much sense to me. 99% of a batters job is to get on base and hit for power. If you have a batter who stinks at both of those things but excels at the 1%, he still has practically no offensive value. Replacement level hitter.
  19. After being wayyyy behind a coupple months ago, the Brewers are only 3 HRs behind leading the NL: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggregate?sort=homeRuns&split=0&group=9&season=2008&seasonType=2&statType=batting&type=reg If you are only able to do one thing (team OBP is 19th), might as well be the best at it.
  20. ESPN is just feeding on people's ignorance to pretend this is some kind of story.
  21. bill shroeder's comment on counsell tonight, "he might go through an 0-10 stretch, but you know at least 2 of those at bats he will get the runner over" I'll leave it to someone else to comment on that For once, Bill said something that was 100% factually correct.
  22. This Counsell situation is driving me insane. Can Melvin just call Yost already and tell him to stop acting like an idiot? It's embarrassing.
  23. You are using Bill FRIGGIN' Schroeder to back up your theory? The guy also thinks HRs suck and a batter should just hack at everything with 2 strikes on him.
  24. I'd rather just forget about trying to get Sheets and/or Sabathia to pitch in the St Louis series and skip Suppan three times. Gives CC, Sheets and Parra each an extra start. CC and Sheets could still pitch against the Cubs twice. My hope is that Sheets wouldn't have to make that last start in game #162, though.
  25. If Counsell can still get regular playing time while stinking up the joint, what's going to happen when he eventually has a couple of back to back mutli-hit games? Everyday starter and leadoff hitter? Yost has no idea how to judge talent and Melvin apparently doesn't care. That has to give you a warm, fuzzy feeling while in the middle of a playoff race.
