  1. Just curious endaround. On what are you basing that statement? His .367 career OBP in the majors or his .316 career BA? I know you hate guys with little or no power, but we're talking about a guy to fill in on the bench for a couple weeks, not be the next starting CF. What good would it be for Cain to come up and sit anyway? What is your fascination with quoting career stats for guys that are either 50 years old or have 50 major league ABs? Hopper hasn't had a "career" in the majors.
  2. What is Macha's identity, exactly? Looking at Pretendastronaut's quote, managers are always spouting off cliches like that. Well yeh, swing at the strikes and not at the balls. Great. Macha doesn't show much emotion, which fans hate but I don't see how the Brewers will win more games if Macha starts getting fired up. But I don't think Hoffman is blowing games and the offense is stinking because they aren't emotionally motivated either. I just think fans get mad when their team struggles and want to see the managers get mad as. It's the same thing when fans like to read their team's beat writer tear into the team after a bad game or games. Solidarity. It's comforting.
  3. On average, pitchers lose something like 1/2 MPH per year (I don't recall the exact number). I would chalk up the 2 MPH difference to it being early but it's certainly worth keeping an eye at. I would think that you have to be a pretty special pitcher to have success with a 86 MPH fastball and Bush isn't.
  4. Are there any 40+ year old relievers that Melvin could sign next year?
  5. He hit a weak grounder that hit two infielders. It was dumb luck and I loved it.
  6. As a New Year's resolution, decided to lose some weight. Started at 6'0", 220. I'm now 180. I used the Weight Watchers method of tracking my diet, which really isn't anything special. You just keep track of calories, fat and dietary fiber. I made a spreadsheet in google docs if anyone is interested. Anyway, just eating right, walking, pushups and pullups. I'm sure I'm not in great cardio shape but I feel much better.
  7. Sheets' fastball is over 5 MPH faster than Zito's.
  8. Just follow my link. He's lost a couple of MPH over the last half decade. That doesn't appear to by the smoking gun. And Sheets has gotten away with being a two pitch starting pitcher because he has always had TWO plus pitches. He throws over the top more than most pitchers, which is why he has a 12-6 curve and why his fastball rises more than it runs (relative to the average fastball). Looking at Fangraph's run values by pitch type, it looks like his curve has lost some of it's effectiveness over the years: http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=710&position=P#pitchvalues Obviously, one compliments the other but it's interesting nontheless.
  9. Do you think the Giants were just going to give up Barry Zito for Bill Hall and Jeff Suppan? What other "crap" did you have in mind as a toss-in?Zito is 32 years old. He's something like a true 4.25 ERA pitcher right now and is obviously on the downward slope of his career Here is the guaranteed money remaining on his contract and in parentheses, my quick and dirty estimate of his projected worth): 2010: $18.5 mil ($8 mil... basically assuming he's average now) 2011 $18.5 mil ($7 mil) 2012: $19. mil ($6 mil) 2013: $ 20.0 mil ($5 mil) A person could argue that he's worth less than that but I'll be nice. So Zito's contract overvalues his projected performance by something like FIFTY MILLION DOLLARS. How much talent do you think you could buy for negative $50 mil? I would say that Vegas would happily give you 5,000+:1 odds on Zito winning the Cy Young ever again. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  10. Ha, the first hard hit ball for the Brewers in the 9th results in a double play. So funny.
  11. My goodness, it's the Dodger's turn to get dinked and dunked. These things sure do even out over a season...
  12. Enjoy a good game! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. Wow, Loney is not nearly good enough to walk here, even when you consider the platoon advantage.
  14. Good strategy or not, I just hate watching batters trying to make an out.
  15. So far, he's lost 1.3 MPH from 2008, according to fangraphs. Losing that in 2 years wouldn't be surprising for any pitcher. That doesn't help him, obviously, but your claim that he should be expected to get hammered because of his 91 MPH fastball is a huge assumption, IMO. His walk rate is way up, so if I had to guess, his location is more of the issue. http://www.fangraphs.com/...yerid=710&position=P
  16. Since I think the average slump is just random, I predict they all get out of them at the same time. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  17. The pitching staff is in no position to complain about anyone. http://espn.go.com/mlb/st...0/seasontype/2/league/nl
  18. I must have a far lower expectation for the Brewers than most. A good GM can be a huge advantage but cold hard cash simply can't be beat. With three teams in the NL Central alone being able to outspend the Brewers every year, expecting the Brewers to perenially compete for a playoff spot seems like a pipe dream to me. The Brewers have an average payroll with maybe and average GM and the smoke clears, they'll probably have close to an average record. That seems to be the reality of the situation. Once in awhile they'll win 90 or 70 games. It just seems like many MLB fans are in denial about how much cash plays a roll in who wins and loses.
  19. Hey, I went to the final 2 games of the Cubs series as well. First and last time I'll attend 4 of 5 games. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gifBasically, I just hope this team finds its swagger soon, whatever that may be. I appreciate you don't think it's so simple but I'm guessing they will the moment they start winning again. This sucks.
  20. That's not even close to true, but all the same I did miss one this week, and am late getting it up tonight. Life happens sometimes, but that does raise this post well; One of the goals of this new format was to make it easier to set up than in the past. We tried to make them easier to edit, and have had a few people do it so far without breaking it. Setting up new ones would take some HTML know-how. A couple of big work deadlines got completed this week, so I can probably find some time this weekend to make more templates ahead that people can use, and write up an explanation. Thanks for trying. Sorry, the 10 minute comment was a gross exaggeration, obviously. I'm used to having the IGT created many hours before the game starts. I'd like to be able to start one if, 8 hours before the first pitch, I'd like to complain about something. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  21. How does a team have a heartful losing streak, exactly? It feels like this team has lost their swagger. It doesn't seem like they're having fun and the offense looks lethargic. And what team looks like they are having fun while losing? Hell, fans destroy any player who laughed it up and was having fun in such a situation. Am I wrong?
  22. Pretendastronaut, is there any way for us to use your template to start an IGT when you aren't around? When I try to copy the source code, the tables get all messed up. Graphically, as long as the Brewers have played a particular team, all that is missing is the opposing pitcher's photo.
