  1. Well Geoff Jenkins was also voted in as the Fans' choice a couple years ago, and Lyle Overbay, when he carried a .330 average into the ASB, was almost voted onto the team as well. We cheer for laundry, and thus vote accordingly...like Lemmings. I am Prince's lemming, though I also follow Yo. It's not the same as being voted in to start. Jenkins was the 26th player or whatever number you can vote for online. Prince winning the fan vote is actually pretty unique considering the market he plays in...I agree with those that have posted it doesn't matter what market he plays in, but it DOES matter in terms of endorsements. Favre has never really been big into that, but if Prince is a big market will lead to a lot bigger pay day in terms of dollars.
  2. I agree with the entire divorce thing...get those numbers as high as you can...it's your only hope of keeping some of your stuff. I think it's important to remember that these probably really aren't all Shaq's expenses. I know he's been one to give back to his family and to kids so these numbers could really not be his true costs. And if they are...who cares. Shaq makes the big money and he's STILL saving $1 million a month. That's more than you can say about a lot of other athletes. Where does this monthly "salary" come from in this article? I'm guessing that's post tax because that does seem kind of low -- if his salary and endorsements are included.
  3. I think the city of Milwaukee needs baseball. It just likes to see a winning team. I think the main point I think about whether or not there should be baseball is the fact that Milwaukee can't really handle the sports teams they have right now when a team isn't winning. The Brewers, Bucks, Admirals, Wave, Marquette, and UWM are too many teams to have the stadiums filled when they're losing. I personally think the Bucks will be out of Milwaukee in the next few years because Milwaukee isn't going to support another arena...anyways back to the O's. I guess I don't think it's the worst thing in the world to go to Aquino. It's not like he was their first choice and it's not like the O's are a playoff team anyways. Maybe Aquino somehow is a good closer and they can ship him off for prospects. I personally was sad that the O's got Sarfate. Sarfate really looked good with the Astros (in a short period), but I can't blame them for trading him when he has some value -- they got him for free. I still think Sarfate ends up the closer at some point during the season and I think its a spot he really could excel. I think history proves he's not the type of pitcher who should really start, but in a relief role he can throw triple digits -- now he just has that control problem.
  4. I think Braun moving to a new position is one of the reasons they're not ranked as high. If he adapts well, I'm sure they'll move up that list. Maybe Cameron not being there for the first 25 games is somehow factored into where they are ranked.
  5. My guess is that another former Brewer gets a shot at the O's closer job -- Dennis Sarfate. If you're going to throw something on the wall and see if it sticks, I'd rather go with Sarfate than Aquino.
  6. So I think I'm screwed because I get paid under the table...which I spose is like getting the extra money straight up all the time. However, I'm also a homeowner, and maybe that can help to some extent...I might have to see if my boss can file paperwork or something for me, however, I don't know how possible that is at this point...I could do so much with 300-600 dollars its stupid, especially since every dime I'm making is pretty much goin into a morgage payment for a house I'm trying to sell, and don't even live in anymore...guh. If you're not paying income taxes, I don't see why you really should get a tax rebate.
  7. This will be based off of 2007 income, right? This is something I haven't been able to find either, but it'll be interesting to see what they base it off of. If you file an extension for 2007 your return won't be due until this October. My guess is they'll do it off of the most recent return they have -- this will force some to do their taxes sooner and in turn will force those who owe money to pay sooner.
  8. Me too.... gotsmail@yahoo.com
  9. From everything I've heard, the Brewers will probably choose to stay in the south if at all possible (should Nashville and/or Huntsville leave). They get in all the games and rarely get rained/snowed out. That's important to the Brewers in the development of the players -- get playing time and avoid cancelled games.
  10. It would stink to lose Nashville and Huntsville. I don't know what I'd do with myself in the summer?
  11. I see what you're saying in your comparison to Beckett, but Beckett is two years younger and his injuries were at the beginning of his MLB career. This isn't the beginning for Sheets and he's about to approach his biggest payday (possibly) very soon. I just see this as a tremendous risk for the Brewers -- especially if some other moves go down that tie up even more money. Part of being a small market team is avoiding the risks and getting players for those they might lose (Twins and Santana). Has anyone heard anything from Doug about the Brewers approaching Sheets about a deal?
  12. I think the fact that one injury bridged two years gives people a warped view of his health. How is it a warped view? I guess my question would be what are Sheets injuries related to? Are they related to anything or do you think it's just bad luck? I see him as injury prone because he continues to get hurt. I understand it hasn't been an arm injury, but I'm concerned with the overall injury front in regards to Sheets.
  13. I'm more worried by his peripherals being down last year than him being hurt... in fact if he had pitched 200 IP last season I'd be MORE worried right now because it would have put too much stress on his arm after two half seasons in a row. So will you be worried if we sign him to an extension and he pitches 200 IP this year? I really don't understand the logic in relation to IPs. If he's the ace, he should pitch the innings it takes and you should ride that horse. Sheets isn't getting younger and if he can't handle the stress on his arm he shouldn't be a player we give a ton of money to.
  14. When Sheets has pitched, he's been as good as the other two, and sometimes better. That is my main concern. I just don't believe he will stay healthy. I'm not saying he's a bad pitcher when he's pitching well...he's pretty darn good. I just can't picture Sheets staying healthy for a year. I remember beginning of last season one radio station was taking bets on when Sheets would make his first trip to the DL...that's not what I really want to pay a ton of money for. I think the Brewers have struggled when he's on the DL, but part of that is the fallout of Sheets. They've counted on him and he hasn't been there due to injuries. I think the Brewers should pencil Sheets in as their #5 or #6 starter (at least that kind of mentality). If he's healthy, great. If he gets hurt again, it's not going to be this big shock or hoping he comes back soon.
  15. You make it sound like you have inside information from multiple sources, confirming that Sheets doesn't stay in shape. In actuality, it was really just one guy from almost a decade ago. I see your point. They still do keep in contact with each other and from the guy it's been this way in his minor league days - in regards to internal questions regarding the shape Sheets has kept himself in. Take it for what it's worth. I think the fact that he doesn't appear to be in great shape (baggy uniform is hard to see where he's at) and the injuries that keep occuring may possibly lead to a conclusion that he isn't keeping himself in shape. I'm not saying all baseball players are in great shape, but to give a huge contract to a player that may possibly not keep himself in shape is a risk in my opinion.
  16. I have already apologized for the confusion. Sheets did spend some time with Beloit -- not on the roster, but the player that mentioned this was his roommate and played with him in 1999 in Stockton. Take it for what's it worth, but I think just looking at Sheets I feel comfortable saying he's not in the world's best physical shape.
  17. Further, it points to something that's been suggested before: it is pretty rare that top of the rotation starters are hitting free agency. Peavy was one of the names fans and writers were eyeing from the next off-season's FA class, saying, hey, Silva ain't much, but wait 'til next year when Sabathia, Sheets, Peavy, Santana hit free agency. I wouldn't be surprised if almost all of those guys were extended before they hit FA...those that do might well be regarded as damaged goods as suggested above, perhaps as Zito should have been. The fact that a guy like Peavy is unlikely to hit the market ought to make Santana (and Sheets) all the more valuable in trade. Peavy wouldn't be a free agent though until 2009, right? He wouldn't be in next year's class. Sheets doesn't belong in the same sentence as Sabathia, Peavy, or Santana in my opinion. If he gets anywhere near those deals, let him sign it...just not in a Brewers uniform. I do believe we are putting too much value in Sheets. Sheets will be traded before 2008 if he's anywhere near the value of CC, Jake, or Johan right now. His value isn't that high.
  18. This was my initial thought. If the 3-yr. number sticks, that means he hits FA again as a 30-y-o. You will still likely see a ginormous deal then - at least 5 years, and even ginormouser money than is being thrown around now. Why wouldn't you ask for more though now? This is about money in 2010, 2011, and 2012. I really don't think it's about the money -- if this is true. He will be way undervalue. As far as Sheets for $15 million a year, what stats will he need for one to justify that? Again, he isn't doing anything to stay in shape...and that's from players who have played with him. Why pay him that much? I really have a feeling his trade value isn't that high. If Sheets is so great, why wouldn't the Red Sox and Yankees be going after him? He only has one year left on a small market team. He is the exact player big market teams trade for right now...if Sheets is on the team to start 2008 we'll know one of two things... 1. Sheets' value right now is small -- ie trade at deadline 2. The Brewers believe they can re-sign him after 2008...not before
  19. From mlb.com... "I know what I can get on the open market, but if I get to the open market, it won't be about the money," Peavy said last month. "This team has given me financial security for this Alabama boy's life. I'm very comfortable to be where I'm at." He's under contract through 2009 already. So this would really be a definition of a discounted deal. If anything, it gives me hopes that Sheets would do a $12 million a year deal...the Brewers deserve a discount a lot more than the Padres do with Peavy, but I respect Peavy. It's good to hear things like that.
  20. Actually that deal makes out evenly per year. I don't think it really impacts Sheets that much since they both average out about 18 million per year. I would be surprised if Peavy only takes a 3 year deal, but if Sheets gets 18 million per I really hope it's not Milwaukee that signs him to that. If anything, this lowers Sheets value quite a bit in my mind since like pointed out above he's 3 years older and has health concerns.
  21. r.a. dickey signed a minor league contract with the twins and has been invited to spring training as a non-roster player. That stinks. He was a AAAA player, but he was really well liked here in Nashville. Best of luck to him.
  22. he just seems like the kind of guy who'll always be around baseball in some capacity. I agree. I can really see him as a baseball coach. I could see him being a roving catcher/bullpen coach in a team's minor league system.
  23. I don't know if this is posted anywhere else, but I thought I'd mention it. Melvin indicated he would not be offering a contract to free-agent catcher Damian Miller, a Wisconsin native who spent the last three years with the Brewers. Instead, Melvin said Mike Rivera, Vinny Rottino and newcomer Eric Munson would compete for the backup role. "We figure with a veteran guy like Jason on the club, we'd like to have that second spot on the roster be a competitive battle," Melvin said. "And also keep that open in case there's an opportunity to get a catcher, someone who could be a big part of the future, down the road." Link
  24. I politely disagree. If Hall si moved to 3rd, I'd put Hart in CF. He has OF experience and has played CF. I think putting Braun in CF could negate moving Hall to 3B in some ways (I'd imagine it's a big learning curve in CF compared to LF or RF).
  25. The whole thing is just very bizarre. Apparently last week someone broke into his house, went through a bunch of drawers (though apparently didn't steal anything) and left a knife on Taylor's bed. The knife thing stood out to me. That's some scary stuff.
