  1. And just to be clear to anyone who might be confused by the weird MLB free agent rules, that means the Brewers don't lose a draft pick and that the Dodgers won't gain one.
  2. And your clever use of irony to me. It will endear him to many who would frequent a message board I imagine, but it does actually endure him to me because I HATE Star Wars. Now if he had said Dark City, that would have been a different story. He had an affinity for Memento so that somewhat makes up for the other bad movie choice in my eyes. In all seriousness he came off as a very likable guy. Oops. Nope. Just a dumb typo. Here's the link. The Star Wars stuff comes at about the 8 minute mark. http://www.stationcaster.com/download.php?file=http://www.stationcaster.com/stations/wauk/media/mpeg/Randy_Wolf_Brewers_pitcher_12_14_09_Homer-1260831245.mp3&id=38713
  3. Listening to Wolf on Homer right now. He said he's a "Star Wars nerd." I have a feeling that's going to endure him to a few posters around here. Also, came off as a likable guy who I am sure will be a go to for the media when they are looking for a quote. I'll try to remember to post the link to the interview when 540 posts it later.
  4. Disappointed the Brewers didn't have the dogs to get in on either guy, but I'm glad that they traded Lee back to the AL.
  5. Wang was officially non-tendered by the Yankees today. Definitely interested in adding him to the list of bedard, sheets, duchscherer and mulder. Can;t rely on him to start the season. But he would he could be a low-risk, reasonable reward candidate.
  6. I'm calling my shot right now. He'll replace Bill Schroeder on Brewers broadcast in 10 years.
  7. The guy who wrote this is a knucklehead, as endaround pointed out overpaying in a trade and in free agency for two overrated middle relievers surely makes them losers. On another note, it always drives me crazy when people accuse a columnist of being a biased journalist. He's giving his opinion on what happened, not reporting new material. He's paid to reveal his biases.
  8. Is this someone that Peterson could help get on the right track based on his reputation? Think that's part of the reason they made the pick?
  9. Anything can happen? Maybe, but it never happens to the Twins. Their approach doesn't pay off. All of those division titles and playoff appearances and they haven't made one World Series appearance. There has to be a better way. Falling lock step in their methods and expecting a different result is literally insanity.
  10. TH speculates on Twitter that this means Seth McClung will likely be non-tendered.
  11. I second this. I also wouldn't mind a similar run at Bedard.
  12. Yeah, except '87 and '91 were a totally different era in major league baseball, free agency and spending money on players. The point is that the tightfisted tactics of the Twins have scored them tons of division titles but literally nothing else. There has to be a middle ground between the consistent mild success of the Twins and the WS titles followed by terrible seasons of the Marlins.
  13. I so tire of the "They shoulda made this debunked trade rumor." It was a rumor. That's it. And if you think Wolf's three year contract is a risk, what about trading a decent, veteran everyday player for a guy who may never take the mound again. How many World Series titles have the Twins won with this approach? I'm not sure why the Twins are held up as this great model when they manage to get bounced from the first round every year. They do some things right, but they, nor the Brewers, will ever win a championship without taking some risks. The Wolf contract is a pretty good one. Last year's staff was so bad, they had to sign somebody besides a high-risk, high reward guy. It would be great if they could bring in Duchscherer, Sheets and Mulder and have one or two of them work out. But their track records suggest none of them will. Wolf's suggests that he will be at least in average starting pitcher for the Crew this year and next. Melvin had to make a move for a guy like Wolf and then take some shots on guys like Mulder and Duchscherer. Indications are that he will do exactly that. It's unfortunate that the Brewers had to go this route and don't have home grown pitching help on the horizon. But comparing this signing to that of Suppan is just silly based on both past performance and pure stuff.
  14. I have a feel the $27 to $31 million difference are the incentives being negotiated. The team is probably leaking that the deal is $27 mil and Wolf's camp is saying its closer to $31.
  15. It's all over Twitter right now, but no links as of yet.
  16. Well about that same time I heard that on the D-List TH posted a story that Wolf's agent is still shopping the offer, now reportedly 3 years $31 million. So who knows. http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/78794647.html
  17. Drew Olson on the D-List just said he got a text from someone in a position to know that Wolf to the Brewers IS a done deal to be confirmed shortly.
  18. Can you trade a guy that accepts arby before June 15th? Or is the rule different than signing a free agent? BTW, it very well could be MA's call on not offering arby to any of these guys considering he holds the purse strings.
  19. Considering St. Louis is blaming Keith Law and Will Carrol for this, I doubt the one win would have made a difference. I know you guys will be shocked by this but Cardinals fans and media are having a conniption fit over the vote. The entire sports page today was dedicated to Wainright and Carpenter not winning. It was topped by the single dumbest column I have ever read - and that is saying something. Literally the headline on the story: Why don't wins count anymore?
  20. I don't think those opinions are mutually exclusive, they both support my idea that it's better to sign Prince to a fair market contract than trade him for unknown quantities. 1. I think teams are less likely than they were to get rid of young guys now than they were even in 2007, so I think a trade package like what the Rangers got is unrealistic. 2. Even if you could get a package like that, I don't think it's fair value. I don't think it's worth trading a known top-tier commodity whose projectable value doesn't have much variation in it for a couple players who add up to the same value and have a lot more variation in their projections. I respect your view. I think you make a good case. I don't agree.
  21. That is a nice haul for Teixeira in retrospect, but Saltalmacchia was the centerpiece in that deal, and still hasn't produced in the majors yet - it's still really early and none of these guys have done anything yet. And that's kind of my point. I have confidence that the Brewers will continue to draft well and produce similar risk/reward minor league players. So why not lock up a guy that's a sure thing. And like RoCoBrewfan said, only do it until Fielder is 31 or 32 and let guys like Weeks, Hart and Hardy move on instead. Then fill their positions with your own young players. If, like Teixeria, Fielder turns down a big fair-market contract extension, then I would be fine with a trade like this. But I wonder how likely getting this type of deal will be like this year or next considering even big market teams seem reluctant to give up their cheap young talent.
  22. Look at the big free agents to be that have been traded the past few years. Which one of those packages would you take for Prince in retrospect or would actually be worth it? I don't think small market teams can get fair value for guys like Prince because big market clubs basically say, "Fine, we'll wait until free agency and you can get a couple draft picks instead." Certainly you can get a trade that's close in "value" with pre-arby guys, but to me there's greater risk in those pre-arby types bombing than keeping - and paying - a proven performer like Fielder. How many of those parts would be upgrades over young players the Brewers will already have in those positions and how much of downgrade would there be at first losing Fielder?
  23. An tweet from TH regarding this: @Haudricourt Brewers GM Doug Melvin has said he won't address an extension for Prince Fielder until he fills current needs. Probably Jan. at earliest. http://twitter.com/Haudricourt/status/5894268830
  24. I'm not exactly getting my hopes up, but SI's Jon Heyman tweeted this earlier today: #brewers plan to try to lock up prince fielder this winter. dont put it past milwaukee (1 of 9 teams to draw 3 mil fans) http://twitter.com/SI_JonHeyman/status/5891658493 I've been an advocate that you don't let talents like Fielder go via trade or Type A free agency because you can never get equal value for special players. With payroll flexibility of this year and the young pitching coming up, I think this would be a great move if they can actually get Prince and Boras to do an extension.
  25. I'm listening to him right now on the D-List. I didn't have a strong opinion about him either way. But I tell you what, he sure does talk a good game.
