  1. "Welcome to Minute Maid Park, where tonight the Milwaukee Brewers will take on the Round Rock Express!" Pence out, Berkman out and possibly being traded to the Yankees. Needless to say, if Manny struggles again he can't blame a strong opponent.
  2. Regarding Jackson apparently being close to going to the White Sox, it's being heavily speculated that Chicago wouldn't be keeping him. The Nationals are apparently enamored with him, and would prefer him over Daniel Hudson in a possible Adam Dunn trade. It's one of the reasons why the Nats, ChiSox, and Diamondbacks were rumored to be working on a 3-team deal with Jackson and Dunn involved, but if there's any truth to this Kenny Williams may just prefer to cut out the middle man.
  3. Capps will close, Rauch moves to the 8th inning, says ESPN. I really can't wrap my head around this deal. It's so unlike the Twins to make a trade like this, and I would've thought if they were going to trade Ramos, it would be for a starter.
  4. Maybe it's just the fact that we're less than 48 hours away from the deadline now, but Melvin's comments in that blog post sounded to me like blatant posturing. Yeah, it's possible he means what he says and he's turning his phone off until after 3 on Saturday, but it's equally possible that he's just trying to gain some leverage. He's right -- he doesn't have to trade these guys, which is probably what he's been telling everyone who's been calling about Hart, Fielder, and everyone else. To me, this isn't any different than any of the other GM-speak we've heard over the years -- "I'm not motivated to move Lyle Overbay," etc.
  5. J. A. Happ's career MLB stats: 47 games, 31 starts, 217 IP, 84 BB, 159 K, 14-5 W/L, 1.29 WHIP, 3.11 ERAIf that's total junk, then I think we need more junk on our team. He's been getting good results, but he's not a top of the line pitching prospect, and he's certainly not going to be a "Cliff Lee type" like Astros scouts apparently think he'll be.
  6. The pieces of this deal were rumored for a couple hours, but it looks like it's official now that Florida's game against the Giants has ended. Ken Rosenthal with the pieces: TEX gets: INF Jorge Cantu FLA gets: RHP Evan Reed RHP Omar Poveda Reed is in AA, Poveda is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Ian Kinsler recently went on the DL for the Rangers, so it's conceivable that Cantu could fill in at 2B until Kinsler returns, then slide to first base.
  7. Per Ken Rosenthal, the Astros are flipping Gose to the Blue Jays for Brett Wallace. Jeff Fletcher notes it's the third time Wallace has been traded in the past 12 months. Interestingly enough, Wallace has been tangentally involved in three of the biggest trades in the league during that time -- went from STL to OAK in the Matt Holliday deal, and from OAK to TOR for prospects the Jays got in the Roy Halladay deal. Now, he's getting traded for a prospect received in the Oswalt deal. Wallace still doesn't really have a position on an NL club, so maybe he's Lance Berkman's eventual replacement at first?
  8. I love having Ed Wade in the division. I hope Houston gives him a lifetime contract. I know the starting pitching market is a bit different than the market for hitters, but after seeing the kind of returns the Diamondbacks and Astros got for Haren and Oswalt in a year where there seems to be fewer pitching options on the trading block than bats, I'd almost rather see Melvin stay away from dealing anyone than accept a deal like this.
  9. The Passan tweet is a bummer, but hopefully it's just the Rangers posturing to see if they can get out of giving up less. There's going to be a lot of that going on in the next couple days.
  10. And this is the guy that writes up the Brewers' Top 10 Prospects for Baseball America. I cringed when I saw that, too.
  11. Villanueva down, Hawkins activated, says McCalvy. Definitely sooner than expected, but the bullpen has been taxed and ineffective lately, so I can't say I'm too surprised.
  12. At no point has Prince's FA been about winning. It may be the way he plays the game and feels, but his contract will NEVER be about winning. Follow the money, it's ALWAYS the money. You're going to find very, very few free agency decisions that were made purely with championships in mind. Prince is far from unique in that regard.
  13. Scheppers has some ridiculous stuff, but I'm worried about just how many people think he'll eventually end up a closer due to injury concerns. If they could pry Scheppers and Perez from the Rangers I'd probably feel better about the situation, even if they had to add more players to the deal to get it done. It does seem pretty clear that the Brewers would have to pay the rest of Prince's 2010 salary due to the court's bankruptcy ruling, but if it gets the Brewers better prospects because of it, I'd be all over it compared to some of the other deals that were rumored.
  14. If gameday's hit thingy is accurate at all, I could believe it.Haudricourt mentioned that the announced distance was 450 feet. I can't wait to see the Hit Tracker "true distance" for it, assuming they knocked a few feet off for being a visiting player.
  15. Arguing balls and strikes. Slammed his helmet down, which was probably the big no-no that got him tossed. Also, apparently Brandon Phillips' grand slam either landed in or hit Bernie's slide, according to reports from those who saw it live. I need to see a replay of this.
  16. Buster Olney: "It looks like Ben Sheets may have torn his flexor tendon." That would be the same injury he suffered at the end of 2008. Nothing official yet, but you'd have to think it's a career-ender.
  17. McGehee apparently gets spiked, but luckily stays in the game. Counsell is still the only bench player that's really "available" -- have to wonder how long they can continue to walk the tightrope with such a limited roster. It really stinks that the trade deadline is Saturday, otherwise I think we would've seen Hart put on the DL already.
  18. Can we hit the reset button this game? Yo not looking right early on...hopefully nothing is wrong.
  19. I always get excited for great pitching matchups. Wouldn't mind another speedy 130 minute game tonight. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  20. So, who had Wolf giving up 2 ER in 7 IP after seeing him load the bases with nobody out in the 2nd? Nice bounceback effort for him tonight. Let's steal a late win, guys.
  21. Nice to catch the Reds while the Brewers are playing well. It'd be awfully nice to get this one with Yo going tomorrow.
  22. I've got plenty of friends who are Mets fans, and they'd take this deal in a heartbeat. They don't even really care what they get in return, they just want Perez and Frenchy out of town. For whatever reason, Jeff Francoeur playing for Ned Yost seems like it was just meant to be. He's already got the folksy nickname that ends with a -y and it seems like they'd have a lot of fun hunting in Georgia in the offseason or something.
  23. Keith Law speculates that the PTBNL could be Tyler Skaggs, who the Diamondbacks almost picked in last year's draft.
  24. No reason for the PTBNL to be Trout -- he was drafted over a year ago and can be traded now without having to be a PTBNL. It sounds like the Diamondbacks will be able to choose from a shortlist of players, but that better be one hell of a shortlist for this deal to be worth for them. Rodriguez is a reliever and Corbin was ranked as the 21st best prospect in the Angels' system by John Sickels before the season. Joe Saunders is basically Dave Bush. Edit: Just for comparison, the Diamondbacks gave up Chris Carter, Brett Anderson, Aaron Cunningham, Dana Eveland, Carlos Gonzalez, and Greg Smith to get Haren from Oakland. They just traded him to the Angels for a mediocre starter, a AAA reliever, and a guy described as a C+ prospect.
  25. Angels get: P Dan Haren (stats) Diamondbacks get: P Joe Saunders (stats) P Rafael Rodriguez (stats) P Patrick Corbin (stats) PTBNL Wow. That's definitely not a package I expected to win the Haren sweepstakes. Confirmation from Jeff Fletcher of AOL and Buster Olney.
