I guess a tiny part of me does want to see the Brewers in the playoffs at any cost (even if it does mean a helping hand from that team down south that has nothing but dolts for fans). All of me wants the Brewers in the playoffs at any cost. I want them to play in the tournament for a world championship. The Cubs won homefield advantage tonight -- it really doesn't matter to anybody if they lose anymore games. Not one of their fans is going to feel a twinge of disappointment if they lose. The Cubs love on this board is a joke, more or less. Most of us dislike/loathe the Cubs, but I promise you I'm rooting like hell for them for the next three games because I want the team I love and adore to make the postseason. That should be the the number one or only priority. but I wonder if the Cubs are a little motivated to put the Brewers in the playoffs so that they play away games at Miller Park instead of Shea. The Cubs cannot play the Brewers in the NLDS. Should the Brewers make it, the Cubs would play the Dodgers. I can promise you they'd rather face the LA Dodgers than the Mets. Despite their woeful bullpen, the Mets have a powerful lineup and Johan Santana. And I can promise you there will be a bunch of Cubs fans at the game(s) in LA. I'm wondering if we'll see an NFL-esque situation during the Cubs-Brewers series. I can't think of a situation off of the top of my head in the NFL recently, but perhaps Lou will "try to lose" in order to create a more favorable playoff matchup. Who knows?
PLEASE Marmol ... finish this thing! Sounds weird, but I feel so small trying to knock out a big New York team out of the playoffs. I'm getting very nervous for this week!
Even more incentive to sellout Miller Park on Thursday night. Mark A. is offering a free ticket for a 2009 game to each fan attending Thursday night's game against the Pirates: http://blogs.jsonline.com...cket-for-2009-season.aspx
Lineups for tonight's game: CUBS Soriano, lf Cedeno, 2b D Lee, 1b A Ramirez, 3b Soto, c DeRosa, rf Johnson, cf Theriot, ss Marquis, p NY Mets Reyes, ss Murphy, lf Wright, 3b Delgado, 1b Beltran, cf Church, rf Castillo, 2b Schneider, c Niese, p
Save him for a game that is unlikely to be played? I don't see that as a real popular strategy. Do you mean the one-game playoff? The Padres saved Jake Peavy for the one-game playoff last season while they were in Milwaukee. If we're in a situation on Sunday where the Brewers are a game ahead, they should save Sabathia for Monday, if necessary. And as for McClung ... the Brewers wouldn't be in the position they're in right now without Seth McClung. He's been great for us this week, and he did a fine job back in late May-early July.
I'd play it by ear -- I do whatever I can to start CC Sabathia in an elimination game, but I am leery of him starting twice on three days rest. I'm shaky about starting Gallardo, but frankly, I don't want Suppan or Parra touching a baseball this week. And who knows about Sheets? That leaves Bush, McClung, Sabathia, and Gallardo. Now, I'm sure Dale will start Suppan because he's a playoff-experienced, seasoned veteran -- luckily his start will come against the Pirates. This is what I'm hoping for at this point. It'll change -- CC Sabathia should be starting an elimination game, whether that be Sunday or Monday: Tuesday: Bush Wednesday: Sabathia Thursday: Gallardo/Villanueva biggbpack Friday: McClung Saturday: Sheets (Parra, if Sheets can't go?) Sunday: Bush OR Sabathia Monday: Bush OR Sabathia Soriano's got his number big time and their other RH bats can hurt you. From the naked eye, Alfonso Soriano is the ONLY guy Sabathia has had trouble with on a regular basis. But, would he even be starting this weekend in Milwaukee?
I don't know how many people were at last night's Cowboys-Packers game, but these Brewers were on the Packers sideline for the duration of the game: -CC Sabathia -Prince Fielder -Tony Gwynn -Mike Rivera -Gabe Kapler -Rickie Weeks -Bill Hall I don't know if they were mentioned on the NBC telecast, because I saw a few of them talking with Andrea Kremer of NBC, but it was nice to see them. I wonder if they chartered a flight from Cincinnati to Green Bay.
I still refuse to root for the Cubs. I will not be watching any of the games, but I'll be hoping in vain for a Mets sweep of the Cubs, a Marlins sweep of the Mets, and the Brewers winning out. Man, I'll cheer for anyone to get the Brewers into the playoffs. The Cubs and their fans really don't care about this week - -what will it matter to them if they lose a few games this week? It's like they're on vacation for ten days. I'll put aside my hatred for that organization to will my Milwaukee Brewers into the postseason. Why make your cheering allegiances any more complicated?
Despite the gloom, the Brewers still do have a chance. Philadelphia (Blanton) @ Florida (Sanchez) Atlanta (Campillo) @ NY Mets (Martinez) The Braves roughed up Pedro in the first, and they lead 3-0. Philadelphia and Florida knotted at 2. KEEP HOPE ALIVE!
If this isn't the eighth-last game that I have to see Craig Counsell in a Brewers uniform, I quit. I get it -- the guy is good at defense, but I'm fed up with his squirrelly looking stance and anemic offense.
This feels like getting dumped ... but the pain gets worse each and every day. A win and gaining a game in the WC race would pacify me today. By the way, it's refreshing to see Rickie Weeks not leading off.
I believe for what I have heard, is that things like this are approved by MA I thought Mark A. entertained Suppan at his California home in November/December 2006. It seems like Mark really pushed hard to sign Suppan.
I'm sorry that we were complaining about the Sabathia no-hitter on the night of August 31. I feel so silly about that, compared to gravity of the recent events Seriously, here's a list of what has gone wrong since that day. It's truly unreal: -The Brewers have won 4/18 games (.222 win pct). -Only one victory has been by more than a single run. -The Brewers have been outscored 104-56. -Ben Sheets got hurt. -Manny Parra and Jeff Suppan hit the wall HARD. -Salomon Torres has blown 3 games. -We've been swept by our two biggest competitors, NYM and PHI. -The offense has been pathetic. -Jason Kendall has not received a day off. -Ned Yost has been fired (not necessarily a bad thing). -The team blew a 4-run lead with two outs in the bottom of the 9th, and proceeded to wait another hour to lose that game. -The Cincinnati Reds, without Dunn and Griffey, hit 7 homeruns in a single game. -Carlos Zambrano threw a no-hitter at Miller Park. -Corey Hart forgot how to play baseball. -Craig Counsell (enough said) And we still have 8 more games to play. I hope we are rewarded for this suffering -- the difference between two and three GB is drastic, IMO. I'll hold onto hope until then.
BCU/DJ43 - ultimately you both want the same thing for this team Exactly. Being negative doesn't make one any less of fan, and certainly not a bandwagoner or a "fair-weather" fan as some like to think. But our worst fears have been realized two years in a row now. It's very difficult to not be negative. To expect the rest of us to have Panglossian expectations for the rest of the week isn't fair, based on the past 20 days.
Ramon Ramirez owns the Milwaukee Brewers. What a chokejob. I can't believe this is happening. If you're looking for some good vibrations, the Cubs would prefer NOT to face the Phillies or Mets in the first round. Sucks for them.
I'm going to splurge on some White Sox postseason tickets. I don't care how much they are; I just want to see a postseason game in real life with my own two eyes.
Metropolitans already have the lead ... Reyes lead off the game with a HR. And did Corey Hart really make the All-Star team? The guy's been hitting worse than Counsell/Kendall. I'd rather watch Bill Hall strike out 6 times in 4 AB than watch Counsell hit. Ugh.
A day removed from yesterday's debacle, this loss is STILL eating at my core. I can't get over it; I think it may have been the hardest day I've had to endure as a sports fan. One of these years, I feel like I should be rewarded for my patience and suffering. That said, there's no giving up in me. If I tried to stop watching, it wouldn't work. I'll be glued to the TV for the next week. I love this sport, this team, and this city. This experience is making me stronger -- I'll just appreciate it more when we finally reach the promised land, whether that be a week or 10 years.
Today's loss, the July 3 loss @AZ, and the June 9, 2007 loss were absolutely gut-wrenching and stunning. In all three cases, not an out was recorded between the time the rally began and it ended. Now, that fact isn't mutually exclusive with the fact that the Brewers had a 99% of victory, but are you freakin' kidding me? I could write a book about this terrible streak. They're finding new and outlandish ways of losing EVERY DAY.
