Tailgate police?

Anybody have a story of the "tailgate police"? Has anybody seen a "police" in the lots looking for non-game (checking for tickets) people?

i heard that people either have to leave, or go in by the third inning, which is great, what is the point of going if you aren't there for the game. i'm glad they are doing this, now the real fans can have a better experience...

Plus it might help lower the number of break-ins that were occurring during the games last year.

That's debatable. If they came to drink and party - I would prefer they stayed in the parking lot instead of sitting behind me.

 

Honestly, I think the "tailgate police" are just hollow threats. I can't imagine the Brewers ever doing anything to really impede tailgating (even those who don't attend the game) at Miller Park. It is just too hard to enforce. Sure you might stop a few rowdy tailgates in the parking lot - but you are also going to upset at least a few quality fans as well.

 

Let's face it, in the Brewers down years - tailgating is what brought people to Miller Park/County Stadium. Should the Brewers ever falter again, they would really miss those tailgaters.

They should increase revenue by selling "tailgate tickets" or passes for games that aren't sold-out. There could be a designated tailgate area where those people have to be, so security would be minimal.

So far they have just given warnings, but I agree this is something that is overdue with the large crowds we have been drawing.

I don't see how this could upset anyone. The extra $8 they get for a carload of people without tickets is nothing. And if you do have tickets you can get there THREE hours before the game. That's plenty of time.

The Brewers don't even get the entire $8. The parkers get a cut of that. Tailgators that don't buy tickets are not a big concern for the Brewers (especially seeing how they treat ticket holders). But I do agree that I'd rather see them stay outside than bother me in the park.

I understand peoples frustrations with opening day, but beyond that, I don't think it's a big hastle most of the games. (Until the post season, I'm sure Tailgating will be up so people can get into the post season vibe. I plan on selling a few tickets to make up for the money and listening to the game in the lot).

 

Anyways, how can you logistically enforce checking tickets at the lot.

 

What about walk up ticket people?

Will call ticket people?

Meeting a friend who has the tickets?

Lost the ticket and they re-print it at the ticket office?

Buying tickets from Scalpers?

 

Right now there are zero signs about tailgate policy. How do they expect to enforce any "tailgate" rules when it's not posted anywhere? I think I'd be ok with a post X inning, required proof of ticket or pay a surcharge (like 5 bucks per car or something to help pay for cleanup) to continue staying.

 

Tailgating is part of the culture here, lets stop pretending that it's a bad thing.

I saw some tailgating police on Friday, they were riding around in sets of 3 on their bikes. I didn't see them actually do anything, but they were out there, at least on the edges of the General Parking lot.

I agree there is no way to stop people from getting into the lots without tickets. I have used will-call myself many times or have met people there who had my ticket.

They were there all last season as well. I think they are just cops on bikes looking for public urination and general police enforcement. They carded me in the past (What the heck, i'm 30! silly cops!)

If you want public urination cut down on then you should be rallying for more toilets in the lots. The number of portajohns per person is ridiculous and I don't fault anyone for not wanting to wait 45 minutes in line for one.

 

But like Sgt says... there is NO way to enforce a ticket requirement to get into the lot. It really is only a "problem" on opening day anyways.

My step-brothers copied a printed off ticket from one of their buddies on opening day and photoshopped the seat number, so if anyone walked up to them while they were tailgating since they didn't have tickets they would be fine. They didn't even get approached so it was all for nothing. Opening day is its own entity though.

I was in the parking lot all day during the Opener with a big group and the cops never said anything to us once.

Its really only an issue on high capacity days...

 

Personnally I think its all bark and no bite. The may try to enforce something next year, or when the Brewers make the Playoffs.... but really nothing can or should be done about it.... (yet)

How do you define a real fan? I think someone that can't get tickets to a big game but still shows up with their friends to party with everyone else and listen to Jim and Ueck on the radio are pretty big fans. I did it once when we showed up to a game that was surprisingly sold out and it was a pretty good time. I never got what the big deal was about letting fellow Brewer fans show up and have fun. Either way they are all real fans to me. Sounds like you might be interested in the creation of a family section parking lot with similar rules to the family section seats. Maybe not, I don't want to put words in your mouth...just an idea.

Maybe they should have like a dozen additional lots, to add to the vast field of parking they already have surrounding the stadium. They could have a "Family Section" lot, a "Tailgating Only" lot, a special "College Student Party" lot, and a "Visiting Fans" lot. Maybe they could pave over that stupid river if they need more space.

I was thinking maybe just change an existing parking section to family section since so many people have a problem with people "excessively tailgating". I don't care one way or the other as the current system doesn't bother me at all. Nice response though I actually chuckled a little.

If some of the concern may be from ticket holders expressing frustration from not being able to get into the lot during opening day, how about limiting the group blocks? Maybe it's just a perception because they seem to be right near the main bridge-walk, but sure seems like quite a bit of space is taken up by the radio stations or bars that put up the party tents, bring in bands, setup private porta-potties, etc. (Assuming that is still happening, since I am in the group that gave up opening day since the crowds have grown beyond control the last two years.)

I completely agree. I waited in line for 10 minutes on opening day in the general lot and moved maybe four steps in a huge line.

 

Needless to say, I was one of many who used the hill across the street as a secondary-portajohn.
