Random question, JJ's MPH on throws to first

Posted

I have heard them mention there was thoughts of JJ being a pitcher, and how much juice he puts on the ball throwing to first

Has this ever been measured? What is league average?

For that matter, catcher to second speed as well? I would assume this one shows up on the normal gun

I don't know, but I will bet that David Eckstein is throwing no more than 50 MPH.
That's just because he realizes his changeup is his best throw... it deceives batters into running slower.

I remember hearing somewhere about a third baseman who tried out with a major league team (friend of a friend of a friend type guy....would have played in the minors), and that they'd time their throws from 3rd to 1st, and if it wasn't at least 80mph they wouldn't even consider him.

I don't know for sure, but I know I've heard Bill and Brian talk about how JJ threw mid 90's, which is why they were talking about him pitching in the 1st place.

Yeah I seem to recall someone saying Tulowitzki threw 95mph to first. I bet JJ is high 80's if that is the barometer.

I remember the Braves announcers used to claim Furcal could throw 95-99, but I was always skeptical of that. Because if it's true that shortstops can throw it 95+ from their position to first, what could they throw if they were throwing off a mound that is only 60 feet away and with a wind-up? 110? 120?

I was just trying to verify this, and couldn't with a quick scan of his bio, but I seem to remember that when he was scouted, he could have been brought up as a pitcher. I'd be willing wager that his throws can reach the low to mid 90's. Maybe someday, he'll be put on the mound and we'll find out.

Maybe a crow's hop might give you more momentum than a windup? I dunno. it does sound fishy though. I recall someone saying Dave Parker threw a ball like 114 from right field. Not sure how accurate that was.

well..... if he was running at 20 mph, and threw the ball at 94 mph, could the ball then go 114 mph? My head hurts now.

Looks like most infielders are about 80 - 82 with some touching 85 if they're good (so may 92 isn't out of reach if you are a phenom)

I've always heard that JJ could hit 95-96 on the gun as a high school pitcher.

WOAH SOLVDD! When Escobar is ready, we can just make Hardy a pitcher.
