Is it time to get a 2b?

Weeks looks fine for a few games after a rest or the DL and then resumes his poor approach. This makes me think he still has a decent amount a wrist pain that flames up with use. So its time to really doubt he'll get there without a decent amoutn fo rest. There are two rental options out there that could easily split time with Graffy (of course this assumes Yost realizes that Counsell is a bad option). Grudz from KC and Loretta from Houston would seem to be two decent options that would seem to come fairly cheap.

I'd take Loretta and I don't think we'd have go give up too much to get him, but it might take a little more to pry him away from a division rival though.

Nope, not unless were talking about a blockbuster type deal for Orlando Hudson. Would the Brewers have room for Graffinino / Counsell / Weeks / plus one?

Weeks would either be DL'd or optioned down, likely the former.

I'd like to think that if Weeks is injured they'd sit him. As is I'm inclined to let Weeks work through it. He's looked better the last week or so.

I don't think any move made to get either of those guys would make much sense. The upgrade would be negligible or non-existent, imo. Giving away more talent for such a small upgrade would not be a smart use of resources, I don't think.

Thing is right now Weeks stinks. So yeah both would be a rather cheap upgrade. Actually either would be more of a part time role with Graffy likely taking over full time. If there is a great 2B out there to be had sure, but with Belliard signing an extension, there doesn;t look to be too much out there anymore.

You know, we could also get a bopping OF and move Hall to 2B for the rest of the year. Might be easier to get an impact OF than a 2B.

Braun really needs someone in front of him getting on base.

I think Loretta would be a great guy to have in the lineup. The Brewers need a contact hitter who can hit around .300. This team strikes out too much and relies too much on the homer.

 

Problem is, we already have enough middle infielders, unless we dealt one of them.

 

EDIT: Chase Utley got hurt today. If he's done for a while, maybe there is a chance to deal one of our 2B's to Philly?

I'm starting to think the Brewers may have to consider that Weeks is not their 2B of the future, at this point, much as I hate to say it. He just isn't living up to his hype and potential. I know he's been hurt, but it's not like this is his first season either.

I'm giving Weeks a mulligan THIS year, but Graffy is looks like he's starting to hit so I say start him the rest of the way. No need for a trade.

Weeks is still too young to give up on, considering how talented he is. The Indians faced a similar situation with Brandon Phillips a few years back, and look how he's turned out in Cincinnati.

 

Weeks has improved dramatically on the defensive side of the game - he's truly made himself into a viable 2B, when all the talk a few years back was how he would need to move into the outfield in order to stay in the lineup.

 

Though he's not hitting .300 and lacing frozen ropes all over the field, he is still getting on base at a pretty good clip. This year, the Brewers have enough guys that can hit home runs, right now they need players who can consistently get on base in front of them. There's still 2 months of baseball left in this season, which is plenty of time for Weeks to start hitting the way he's capable of, and really give this team a boost.

He isn't getting on at a good clip. He's getting on 100 points higher than his BA, but when you're hitting .214 that doesn't help much.

Weeks unfortunately has just showed brief glimpses of himself an then has reverted to the guy that just doesn't seem able to get good wood on the ball. If he got back to the player he can be, the Brewers are in great shape. But it's almost August and can they take that gamble?

 

Graffanino has done a lot of nice things since becoming a Brewer. But what he offers, occasional power, decent defense, low OBP, doesn't fit what the Brewers need which is a higher OB guy who can hit around .300 with occasional pop.

Besides, the Brewers lack RH bench punch when Graffy starts.

 

That guy is out there and available and his name isn't Mark Loretta, its Ronnie Belliard. If the Twins ever got realistic and waived the white flag being 9 back in division and 7.5 in wild card, Luis Castillo is another guy who would give the Brewers what they need.

The Nats recently extended Belliard's contract.... I'm not saying he's "untouchable", but I think he figures into the Nats future plans.

Really don't care for Belliard at all. I can only bet he'd revert to his Brewers-form if he came back to Milwaukee. I just don't care for the guy.

Wrist injuries obviously take time to recover, as we have seen with Brad Nelson. It seems like a good idea to me to give Weeks plenty of rest as things continue to heal. Maybe have him and Graffanino start every other day.

Now with Utley out for a while the bidding on any decent 2B might be a bit too rich.
