Brewer interest in Baldelli? Now Crawford?

Posted

Rotoworld posts some possibilities of deals that could be seen at the meetings, they have the brewers as one of the possibilities for baldelli with us shipping them capellan, carlos villanueva and greg aquino.

has anyone else heard this as a rumor or is it something that rotoworld just made up?

Plenty of other brewer tidbits throughout the article as well.

Wow, would that be a big deal for Milwaukee.

Also would leave us really looking for a 5th starter.

Baldelli has had some injury issues the past couple of years, but he certainly can hit and is only 25.

I'd prefer Crawford, but Baldelli is attractive as well.

Also, with shipping off Capellan and Aquino, it definitely implies that we'll be either exploring bullpen arms like Weathers or trading some of our glut of OF's and IF's for a starter and a reliever or two.

But I think the offer is just rotoworld speculation, rather than something that is actually out there. Definitely would like it to be true, though.

I think I like the Horacio Ramirez for Matt Wise rumor in the article a lot more. Horacio was a damn good pitcher a few years ago, and he has to be atleast as good as Matt Wise is.

Plus, then I no longer have to worry the Brewers are going to lose whenever I see Matt Wise on the mound.

Are the D-Rays more interested in trading Crawford or Baldelli? I'd always understood from previous threads that the D-Rays actually liked Baldelli more.

Either way, I would make that trade in a heartbeat. He would definitely help us more than a good 5th starter would. Besides, isn't that what we have ZachJack for?

I agree with Peavy, though, that trade doesn't really seem ligit. TB could definitely get more for Baldelli.

I'd make this deal and I'm one of the biggest Villanueva supporters around.

I wouldn't mind losing Capellan and Aquino. I would assume they could be replaced in deals involving the crowded outfield.

Baldelli is young, has a favorable contract situation, is a natural CF, hits for average and some power. The only negative is his OBP, but I see him more as a number 3 hitter than a leadoff guy.

It does leave a fairly gaping hole in the rotation that hopefully they can fill somehow or do it by speeding up the Gallardo timetable.

I really don't want horacio ramirez...his k/bb rate is like 1...the last guy we had that did thta was jamey wright...

ramirez is a time bomb...someday soon, he'll go from being ok, to being unbelievably bad...and i'd prefer it not be for the brewers..

I wouldn't want to lose Capellan and Villanueava for any CF not named Carl Crawford. I see them as being key elements to our future.

Baldelli's good, but he was injured last year. That package as proposed seems like overpayment (maybe Villanueva + Aquino, but not also Capellan), not to mention a heavy drain-off of pitching. Give 'em Turnbow instead of Villanueva and something else to sweeten the deal, balanced by a mid-grade A or AA guy coming back from TB, and it'd seem a little more logical.

Then again, it'd seem apropos to make that deal AFTER clearing a few more current Brewers OFs from the roster.

espn is reporting weathers is close to signing with the reds

I dont want to deal with Baldellis injury history.

I would make the baldelli trade very quickly myself...he's still really young---25 or so and he's flashed brilliance in the past...getting him for a that group of pitchers would be pretty fair...thought he brewers will desperately need another SP after the trade...

I like Baldelli and would do this trade. Moreover, Baldelli's contract is attractive, he could be under Brewers control until 2011at a reasonable salary if the team options are exercised.

That is the best part of this trade. The D-Rays had to deal with his injury history and we get a healthy Baldelli going forward.

Assuming we can find a home for Jenkins/Mench/Clark I would be all for making this trade....and I wouldnt even think twice about it - Ninja Style!

As of right now I would not make the trade only because we have too many outfielders and not enough bull pen arms. That doesnt mean we can't trade a few OF's, get some arms in the pen and I would be all for the trade.

This would be a GREAT acquisition. He has a very nice contract.

Courtesy of Cot's Baseball Contracts:

  • 2007: $750k
  • 2008: $2.25m
  • 2009: $6m club option ($4m buyout)
  • 2010: $8m club option
  • 2011: $9m club option ($2m buyout; 2010 and 2011 options must be exercised together)

Additionally he is only heading into his age 25 season. For comparison/fun sake, here are baseball-reference's similar batters through age 24:

  1. Gary Matthews (969)
  2. Ellis Burks (968)
  3. Carlos Beltran (965)
  4. Garry Maddox (962)
  5. Vernon Wells (954)
  6. Augie Galan (953)
  7. Bruce Campbell (953) Groovy!
  8. Juan Encarnacion (950)
  9. Vic Wertz (949)
  10. Steve Kemp (948)

Baldelli's power really jumped last year...which is a great sign going forward...

I'd love to have this guy, and i think the price suggested is not a bad deal at all...plus, if he carries an .870 ops and hits .300, his contract will make him one of the best deals in baseball

seriously, 2011??? What was his agent thinking?

i think the bullpen would sort itself out nicely if cappellan was gone...

villanueva would be a pretty big hit right now, but there are defnitely other prospects who could succeed as well...we've gotten a really small sample of Carlos V.

Garry Maddox (962)

Sorry, couldn't help but wonder if this is Greg and Mike Maddox's brother or cousin?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can let me know.

I'd love to accquire Baldelli and the price tag mentioned in this thread seems low. I'd think the Rays would be looking for a more proven young pitcher, someone like Dave Bush.

...except that it's Maddux, not Maddox, for Mike and Greg.
