Per TH:

Veteran infielder Craig Counsell is at third base for the Brewers today, not newly recalled rookie Mat Gamel.

Here is the Brewers' lineup as they try to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the first-place Cardinals:

2B Felipe Lopez

3B Craig Counsell

LF Ryan Braun

1B Prince Fielder

RF Corey Hart

CF Jody Gerut

C Jason Kendall

SS Alcides Escobar

RHP Jeff Suppan

If you're not going to play Gamel in September when you're out of playoff contention, then when are you going to play him? The way this organization has handled our prospects this year is mind boggling.

Even though Gamel's not playing (haven't been able to watch most of this series -- has he even had an AB yet?), at least Patterson's not starting and leading off, and Escobar is starting over Hardy. So the Brewers have that going for them, which is nice.

This series really reminds me of getting swept by the Cubs in September 2003 at Miller Park...the Cubs were clearly a team on the march to bigger things and the Brewers were just playing like muck, trudging towards to the end of the line.

I think you're right SF, but that Cubs series was much more extreme. I'll bet the final game of that series was filled with 95% Chicago fans. As far as this series goes, at least I can look back at last year and smile at how we absolutely destroyed the Cardinals playoff chances.

well thankfully this season is comming to an end and we see how many losses this team will have by year's end.

The one good thing we should be picking within the top 15 next year draft pitching and plenty of it and pray one or two pans out.

You can't be serious. Gamel is finally going to get an at bat, but then LaRussa comes out and brings in Miller and then Gamel is replaced by Bourgeois!?!?!

You can't be serious. Gamel is 10x the hitter Bourgeois is with no noticeable platoon split. Macha is infuriating.

Are you guys even surprised at this point though? I mean, the decisions all year have been as perplexing as can be.
Hardly. But this particular one was.

I could even understand it if there were men on, but what the...

I can't possibly be supportive of Macha coming back next year. He is the anti-progressive. He has shown over the past month that he has no clue as to what he is doing. I can clearly see why Beane had enough, even after winning seasons and playoff appearances. Blech.

I feel bad for Keith Law, who's watched this entire series in person. From Twitter:

Really, Ken? We can't let Gamel face the lefty, down 5-0 with no one on? Not that I want to see him hit or anything. #brewers #thebitterness

Can we finally now start seeing Escobar, Gamel, and Rivera, in the lineup every day? At least 5/7.

Please.

And no more Patterson.

Please!

And don't feed me this "since we are playing playoff teams, we have to put our best players out there", the "integrity of the game", "still have to play to win" garbage. You can't sell me Kendall/Hardy/Counsell is that much better than Rivera/Escobar/Gamel.

Please!!!

Last night I'd begun to wonder if maybe Macha is passive-aggressively doing these things on purpose. It does add another layer of disappointment to the latter part of the season.

I'll just go back now, to my "happy place" from Sunday.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I don't think Gamel being switched out in the 8th is why we lost today, and I don't believe Gamel not being played enough in June or Hardy playing now is why this team is gonna be sub-.500. I'm not 100% on-board with any of these lineup decisions, but I'd be surprised if Macha got canned because of them.
