HBO's Game of Thrones

I know i am loving it. Different from most shows because the people who you think are the "stars" and cant die keep dieing. Im assuming thats because its from a book. I am really enjoying it

Yup, it's from the book. I didn't want to give that away but by now I think everybody realizes that anybody can die at any time.

I kind of came around on this series. After the debut, I was sort of like, "What is really the big deal?" Then I just sort of stuck with it, and the story got much more interesting after the first couple episodes. Last night's finale definitely had some interesting twists and turns (and I never expected last week's episode to end like it did). They've done a good job making you really care about basically every single character, even some of the lesser ones.

Are the books as good as the series? I usually stay away from this genre, but the series has me hooked and I want to know what happens next.

I just started reading "Game of Thrones." I'm about 250 pages through and I think I like the TV show more thus far. It's definitely a quick and fun read though.

I have a friend who read the books through the 5th? I don't want to give much away but he said later on the books get scattered and the story jumps all over the place constantly. In book 1 the Starks were the basically the central characters, I'm not sure that will continue to carry through, but I really like little Arya. She might be my favorite character.

 

I'm not sure if I want to read the books or not. Typically I do, but in this case, I might just let the series unfold.

It really jumps all around. It has been a few years since I read the books but the story gets sort of fractured. Almost like it should have been made into a couple different series. Good, good series though.

Reviving this thread as I just finally manned up enough to stop crying in the fetal position and go into work. Even after seeing what happened to Ned in Season 1, that wedding was just insane.

I sent a similar email this morning to my buddy who had the read the books. Apparently he's been waiting for me to react to that scene for a quite a while now.

 

I'm rapidly running out of people to root for in the show. I'm pretty much down to Arya Stark, John Snow, and Daenerys Targaryen.

I'd add Tyrion to the list of who I root for. I've read the books though and his character plays a little better there. I also find Jamie much more likable as a character as he struggle with the loss of his hand.

Well, I just watched last night's episode, which was an appropriate break from tonight's Brewers game.

 

I guess I don't know at this point where this show is going. I kind of saw that ending coming but figured someone would escape. Crazy stuff.

Anyway, I think she is easy to root for. Hates slavery, becoming stronger, overcoming a lot, ect, ect.

 

I'd add Bran to the list of people to root for and I may come around to Stanis...sort of a similar enemies thing.

 

You've got to remember that at the start of the books Dany is only like 13 or 14, whereas in the show she's portrayed much older. So, in the books she can come off as a whiny and flighty teenager at times while in the show she is quite a bit older and is generally portrayed as a strong young woman type, cherry-picking her best attributes from the books to make her more appealing. She was still kind of whiny and melodramatic in season 2 with the whole "where are my dragons" thing, but it wasn't so bad.

 

I like Stannis a lot. This isn't a spoiler, really, but I'm glad we'll be seeing more of him in the future(maybe starting in the finale?). And his right-hand man Davos. I love me some Davos.

I look at it this way, all these characters are fighting to rule Westeros. In the end only one is going to win so pretty much all the major players save one are going to die at some point.

 

I just wonder how HBO is going to handle the fact that not all of the books in the series have been written yet and the gap between the last two was ridiculously long. After this season there are two more books finished, I've heard HBO is planning on splitting the books into multiple seasons but I also know there are at least 2 more books yet to be written to finish off the series. Even this season is only covering half of book 3. The books are quite lengthy, 1000+ pages, and the author has hinted at splitting the books further to cut down their size. Even without splitting the last books there were 7 books planned and this HBO season is only tackling the 3rd book so it isn't half way through the planned storyline.

As someone has already alluded to about the books is really why I don't like her.

Just a question from a guy who hasn't read the books and didn't get involved in the show until last year: are the books that different from the show? I am always looking for a new book to start so I am wondering if it pays to start reading them after knowing all that I know now from the show.

They are a great read, regardless if you've seen the show or not... if you enjoy Tolkien, you'll enjoy G.R.R. Martin.

 

There are enough differences, and tons of subtleties that the show (obviously) cannot fully capture.

Right, I know, but I was just thinking that they're finishing up a largely Robb-centered season three so Stannis will be more of a focal point for the show in season four I'd hope.

Yeah I agree. I was expecting a bit more. It's going to be a long wait until the next season I guess.
