What can we realistically expect in return for him? As bad as his early numbers were he's had a great July to the tune of a 2.09 ERA, and this after a solid June (3.27 ERA) and May (3.09 ERA). And now that he is closer again, if he can have a successful two weeks is it too much to ask maybe a mid ceiling prospect back for him? Teams tend to trade heavily for relievers. Obviously his contract situation won't help but a solid bullpen is a necessity for a contender. Has anyone heard of any teams tied to KRod?

Most teams could handle the $2.67 million that would be left on his deal, but I doubt they'd give more than a low to mid level prospect back. Still that's money saved.

I would do back flips if we got someone with anywhere near that upside for KRod. I hope you are right.

His value can't be that low can it? He has had an amazing career and is pitching very well right now. He could easily step into a closer's role but now he also has 8th inning experience. I have to imagine somebody would want him.

How much of his contract did we have to eat last year? All we gave up was a no name, no upside arm. So I guess I am not expecting much. I would be very happy with potential utility IF or a young bullpen arm

I'd accept cash. It'd be great to get him off the books and save for the future. He could be traded after the deadline though too to get us some flexibility.

K-Rods value is totally different this year compared to last. A year ago K-Rod had a clause in contract that would make his 17.5M option vest if he had a certain number of games finished.

That is true. I forgot about that. But even set up guys (remember Linebrink) normally fetch a lot more than a no upside arm

Linebrink was a type A Free Agent to be so whatever any team gave up had to be roughly equal to two comp picks. The Mets were just petrified of his option vesting and the only teams they could trade K-Rod to had to have an established closer in place so they couldn't be picky.

You put him ahead of Wily Peralta? I'd like to see Nelson perform a little better in Huntsville before I proclaim him the top pitching prospect in the system.

 

All I said was that I was hoping to get a #3 or #4 type pitching prospect like Nelson. If you think Nelson can be a #1 or #2 that's certainly your opinion but I think he has a ways to go before he meets those expectations.

I don't know if it's reasonable to expect even a guy who (legitimately) projects as a mid-rotation or back-end SP for half of a season of a RP. I'd have to agree with jjfanec -- if we got some other org's "Jimmy Nelson" for K-Rod, I'd be thrilled.

 

(I also agree with paul that Nelson isn't the Brewers' top SP prospect... he might be top 5, but the Brewers have a pretty weak system)

I wouldn't expect much for K-Rod. Sure he's been playing decent of late, but it's not like he's shutdown. He has a 3.59 ERA - the league average for a reliever is 3.66. And while ERA is just one way to judge a guy - it's very average. His 1.43 WHIP is not good either. Too many walks - especially earlier this year. This is not K-Rod of five years ago.

 

And let's not forget he's owed $3.5 milliion or so the rest of the season.

 

To me you're lucky to get someone who projects as nothing more than a fringe player or a relief arm. Perhaps if we pick up some of the salary, that will improve things.

 

But who knows. Maybe someone will bite on his 'name' and overpay. Also, by letting him close the next couple of weeks, maybe he'll put together some nice outings and convince a team he's worth something decent.

if we have a chance to contend, we need 1-2 relievers. I support moving K-Rod if we can get some other arms, or if we feel others can help. Can Rogers help? Nelson? Thornburg? Stetter?

KRod's last two outings, despite hanging on and getting the saves, have been awful. That last out Nyjer caught yesterday was at the fricken warning track.

 

I don't see how another team can look at KRod and see him as being an asset to their bullpen, seriously. He has so many pitches hit the friggin dirt it's sad. If Maldanado wasn't a good defensive catcher the cards would have gotten the tying run in yesterday off of wild pitches.

 

I'd like someone to take KRod, take whatever they offer in return, but I just don't see how any team gives up anything worth a lick for him right now. Hopefully he can have some clean outings between now and the deadline to up his value.

Never underestimate how much credence some people give to "proven closer."

 

I don't like seeing Axford struggle, but this recent string of events has allowed K-Rod to "prove" he can still close, and that's a good thing for his trade value. Assuming, of course, that's he converts his saves.

Anyone who watches him knows he is playing with fire every time out there.

 

He has only had 7 clean innings this year out of 40ish chances for a full inning. He has a WHIP of 1.6 which is just brutal. The guy has been bad. I said earlier in this thread if we got a prospect with any sort of upside I would be happy. Heck, I would be happy to just not have to pay him the rest of the year
