Random thoughts that are pointless and too dumb to say anywhere else thread: 2012

It's awfully easy to track UPS packages that I didn't order and are being sent to addresses that aren't mine. It's even possible to change delivery instructions.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I don't suppose you can change the delivery address, can you? Boy, it would be like Christmas every day!

Yep. You can have the package delivered somewhere else. That's why I signed up for the thing to begin with. Of course, you're going to eventually get caught if you mess with other people's packages. :)

Oh, I know they are a real thing. I just still feel as though that should be a completely made up word.

I'd love to know what was going through the head of the guy who named them when he decided on scuppernong.

I'm still wondering about the first guy to eat an egg. "Hey, look what came out of that bird's butt. I wonder if it's good to eat."

When I worked at Papa John's as an undergrad, we once got an application that said "Once I learn something, witch is kwik, you can't mess with my skillz".

My best application story from when I worked in retail: Had a guy filling out the app at our counter ask me, "Do I have to fill this part out? I don't want them to know I'm a convicted sex offender." We didn't end up hiring him, go figure.

I just had my own "that awkward moment when" moment.

We live in what's considered a walkable neighborhood, so people walk by our house all the time. Just now the walking stopped and a man was tearfully saying things like "You know I'll always love you" to the woman with him. Then I heard something about separation. Then I wished the windows weren't open. They've since continued their walk, but yikes.

That's really surprising and interesting.

We tend to think of the distance of each planet's orbit from the sun. In those terms, Venus's orbit is the closest to Earth's orbit.

Average distance, however, accounts for the fact that two planets can be on opposite sides of the sun. In terms of average distance, Mercury is "closest" to every planet in the Solar System, e.g. Mercury's average distance from Mars, Jupiter, or whatever is less than that of any other planet.

I won't do it, but every time I see "range factor" brought up, I feel a desire to put the term into the cuss filter.

Someday I would like to have on my business card: Dr. Funketown, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Empirical Throwing Analysis.

Years ago I had a batch of cards printed that said: Professional card giver. We used to sell a bunch of them. Probably should make some more. Thanks for the reminder.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

The guy sitting behind us tonight at the game combined "talking a lot about baseball" with "not knowing even the most fundamental aspects of baseball."

It wasn't really annoying, just puzzling. He was in his 60s, and he just didn't know when a force out was in play, or what happened when you pinch hit for a pitcher. He couldn't understand what 1-1, RBI meant on the scoreboard, and yet he talked to his friends all night about baseball.

He seemed like a nice enough guy, but how could he have lived so long and not picked up the basics?

That sounds like many "baseball fans" in Wisconsin I've interacted with. "Baseball fans" of course meaning the 90% of the population that knows there is a baseball team in Milwaukee but only between the months of March and July.

On Friday 2 fifty year old women sat next to us. One talked all pre-game to her friend about how "nice" her 20 game pack was (in another part of the stadium) and how many games she comes to every year. At the start of the game, her friend asked about Fiers. She responded that she had never heard of him and he must be a new player.

I think people sometimes try so hard to fit into a scene that they'll just keep filling the air with commentary that might be on-topic but not necessarily accurate. Who needs quality when you have quantity?

Every time I see the Impressions of Roenicke thread in the Major Leagues forum, I think of somebody doing a Rich Little of our manager.
