The Magical Magic Number is… (part 2)

This is a picture that looks to be from his forgettable playing days with the Crew- sadly, the only picture of this man in a Brewers uniform that I could find. You'll have to take my word for it that a few short years later, this guy would rock the best perm-unibrow combo in big league history while coaching for the crew- wearing the #8 pinstripes.

I'm no Brad Pitt, but Andy Etchebarren is without a doubt one of the ugliest people I've ever seen.

That unibrow thing you're talking about was historic.

hey, that's a good picture of him. i always remember this baseball card:

Love the gold chain addition to this one. I also remember when he coached here and I would see him smoking cigarettes during bp in the dugout.

Now that's what I'm talking about. Thanks for the picture, my memory is a little faulty- I was pretty sure he was sporting the perm mullet, and not the Mike Brady. This confirms those memories.

More Andy Etchebarren...

Very cool. I bet that thing still smells of Aqua Velva and Lucky Strikes.

Not to hijack the magic number thread, but these last few posts caused me to look up Etchebarren's player page on baseballreference.com. It looks like he only played in four games with the Brewers and had six ABs after we purchased his contract from the Angels. Does anyone know the story with this? Did he just retire shortly after being purchased?

I believe that Etch was brought in by Bamberger both as a player and a coach (in his second stint). They were probably buddies from the Orioles days. Back then, the Brewers had tons of catchers- Charlie Moore, Buck Martinez and Ray Fosse- who was always hurt. My guess is that either one returned from injury and there wasn't room for him anymore.

It would sure be nice to have the Cardinals lose more often. This thread was barrelling downhill towards zero and has now reached an almost crawling pace. Cardinals winning again today, 3-1 over Pitt in the 4th.

That barreling pace wasn't highly sustainable, I suspect.

I guess if STL-PIT is a day game, I'll have that much less scoreboard watching to do at the park tonight. Let's Go Bucs! until September 26.

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I want Hawing's opinion on this since most of the rest of us are dudes: with his flowing locks and facial scruff, where does Braun rank on the sexiness scale right now? Like an 11 out of 10? I mean, I'm married with two kids and totally heterosexual, but even I'm seeing it at this point.
My wife says he looks like a lemur. So I guess she's with hawing.

Cardinals won 3-2, Pirates missed many scoring chances (leadoff double, man on second 1 out twice and second and third no outs....no runs in those innings). So the number can only go to 7 tonight if we win. Disappointing. I'm really hoping the Phillies can help us out this weekend. If the Cardinals go there and get 3 or 4, we may have something more serious to worry about. Come on Brewers, let's shave this to 7 tonight!!!

Nah.

Think of it this way. Not counting tonight (for ease of math), if the Brewers win just one game in each of the remaining series, the Cards only need to lose one in each of their remaining series for the Brewers to clinch. And the Brewers aren't going to lose every series.

I understand the math and all that. The Cards have played really well lately, so it's not guarantee they lose a game in every series. We'll know a lot more come Tuesday. This upcoming roadtrip for MIL is the last hurdle I think. They haven't played well in either city so far this year.
