corey knebel sets single season k streak relief record

Who (reliever pitching exclusively in relief) holds the record for most (consecutive games with a strikeout) at any point during the season, not just from the start of the year?

for a single season, bruce sutter, for the 1977 chicago cubs, with 39.

 

knebel can do it . . . but he may have a tough opponent coming up . . . the atlanta braves has the fewest strikeouts in the national league.

knebel has two records in his sights:

 

--if he gets strikeouts in his next two relief appearances, he sets the single-season record.

 

--if he somehow achieves it over the next 12 appearances, he bests arolids chapman (who needed two seasons to get to 49).

Just looked it up and Knebel had a K in his last outing of last year as well, so he really only needs 11 more to best Chapman's overall record.

As great as Knebel has been so far this year Kimbrel & Jansen have been in an entirely different stratsosphere. Craig & Kenley are currently sitting on 0.39 & 0.43 FIPs compared to 1.81 for Corey. Only four players have ever posted a FIP below 1.00 with the previous record low in a season being 0.78 by Kimbrel in 2012. They're on the verge of breaking the model.

Yep, technically Knebel is at 39 relative to Chapman's record. Nice catch.

Yes, but Knebel is within shouting distance of those guys - heck he's within loud conversation of them. He's been elite at a micro fraction of the cost. Jansen makes $10 million and Kimbrel makes over $13 million

Only two relievers have higher K:9 than Knebel - Betances and Kimbrel. He's arguably a better closer than Kenley Jansen for 95% less money.

 

It is more likely that Jansen has been the best closer in baseball than it is that Knebel has been better than him.

 

Jansen's season is just crazy. At one point in June his FIP was negative.

He's doing this while not pitching all that great. Last nights relay play and Arcia up the middle play have saved him from two more blown saves.
