#DBacks getting Luke Weaver, Carson Kelly, Andy Young and a draft pick from #STLCards for Goldschmidt, sources tell The Athletic.

St. Louis Cardinals

@Cardinals

The #STLCards have acquired six-time NL All-Star 1B Paul Goldschmidt from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for C Carson Kelly, RHP Luke Weaver, INF Andy Young and the club's Compensation Round B selection in the 2019 MLB Draft. #TimeToFly

Seems like a reasonable return. A relatively highly rated defensive catcher that hasn't hit yet, a young, soft tossing pitcher on a down year, and an interesting flier, and a comp b pick. Definitely not as much value as some seemed to be expecting.

What would be the Brewers equivalent package? Davies, Nottingham, and Tucker Neuhaus maybe? Seems really underwhelming for an MVP candidate.

Davies and Nottingham were exactly who I thought off too. I figured they would get much more in return. Arguably best 1st baseman in baseball.

Wow, that’s a GREAT deal for the Cardinals. I expected a better haul for Goldschmidt, even for just one year of control.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

Meanwhile, Carpenter moves to 3B and threatens to break Ryan Braun's record for the All-Time worst defensive season at Third.

Huge bummer. I just submitted my 2018-2019 offseason plan in the transaction section and one of my big ones was trading for Goldschmidt. :( I apparently was way off as I included Corey Ray, Eric Thames, Domingo Santana, Marcos Diplan, and Tre Supak. Probably why I am not going to get anywhere close to a GM job. :) I was drooling over having him bat cleanup for the crew though.

Don't the Brewers have a Round A comp pick this year? I could easily see that being a difference, not wanting to give that up. Giving up the Round B comp pick not as painful.

Carson Kelly is a solid defensive catcher, profiling better defensively than Nottingham. But the values shouldn't be all that much dissimilar.

As I said in the trade forum: The return here does seem light, and with how our offense went cold at times last year, his bat would have been a more than welcome addition.

Pretty confident we weren’t chasing Goldy.

I'm pretty confident is saying that if the Brewers wanted Goldy, they could have EASILY beaten this crap Cardinal package. If I'm a DBack fan, I'm disgusted by that return for a franchise icon.

Brewer equilavent offer would be Woodruff, Nottingham, Dubon and a Comp Pick.

Factor in that the Cardinals will 100% offer Goldschmidt a qualifying offer and get a better draft pick then the one they just gave up and this is an absolute steal IMO.

Woodruff has more upside than soft-tossing Weaver. I think Davies is a better comp. I agree that the Cards made a terrific trade, and Goldy is a guy in my mind that would have looked great in the Brewers lineup. Swing and a miss from our front office :(

Woodruff > Weaver by a very wide margin. Kelly > Nottingham, but not by much. Kelly is seriously terrible at hitting right now. Dubon is much more highly rated than the prospect, so that's not a fair comp either.

I like the Davies to Weaver comp. That's much better than the Woodruff comp.

Count me in the camp that would've preferred to beat this offer. But keep in mind we would've needed a much different structure than the comp ones being proposed here because Jesus almost certainly would've been in it, so that would've changed the whole dynamic.

Did our front office even step into the batter's box to take a swing?
