So Martín Maldonado accepted a one year, $2.5 million deal after reportedly turning down $12 million (two years) earlier this off-season.

The more exciting part of this story is Maldonado’s agents old (Scott Boras) and new (Dan Lozano) are feuding.

Per Ken Rosenthal:

Scott Boras: “The Kansas City deal was in place and finalized without us knowing Maldonado had switched agents.” Boras will collect commission on Maldonado’s deal.

Dan Lozano (MVP Sports Group) responds: “If a deal was agreed to a few days ago, how come the player never gave his approval? There are some agents that care more about the fee than they do the player. I care about the player.”

Not just “at Night” anymore.

If he truly did turn down 2 years $12m earlier, I have no idea what he was thinking about. He's turning 33 this season, and has made about $9m for his career so far.

If the owners and players union are honest with themselves, it shouldn't be too difficult to sleuth out where this whole collusion narrative was first ginned up. Unless you are a superstar, being a boras client is becoming less and less of a good thing for players. There have been quite a few recent examples of good veteran players getting screwed who listened to him too much.

There are definitely great agents and agencies, but it's becoming very obvious that there are too many terrible and/or overly self-serving ones, too.

Why would you turn down 2/12 from a team that is seriously contending? Being a backup at 2/12 would be a sweet gig.

This seems really odd because if he turned down the earlier deal it was a huge mistake on his part but the weaker deal was a huge mistake on the Royals part.

I've commented here before on this but Boras is basically gambling with each client and since he can afford spread the risk across multiple commissions he can play the ultimatum strategy and get burned a few times and then make it up on Harper's contract...
