Report: Rodgers wants new contract (Update: May not want to return in 2021)

If he has in fact played his last game as a Packer, be ready for a return to the 70s and 80s for the unforeseeable future.

99% Sure the exact same line was said by fans 13 years ago, and here we are.

ESPN is reporting that the Packers have offered to extend Rodgers' contract. This stuff does not compute. Either that's not true, or Rodgers wants out and is falsely claiming 'lack of commitment'.

#3, Jimmy G, and a future 1st or their 2nd.

They can’t acquire Jimmy G. Between his salary and Rodgers’ dead cap hit, they’d be way over the cap with very little recourse for getting under.

Do-able, but it would require a serious restructure.

Until I see a trade announced, I'm believing all of this is drama, and possibly Aaron lobbying for the team to go a certain way with tonight's pick. Packers would have to agree to some sort of contract restructure just to trade him, if I understand the cap picture correctly.

Then I was part of the 1% that believed Rodgers was the real deal and would become one of the all time greats. I was thrilled when the Packers traded Favre.

Sorry, but I just don't see it in Jordan Love.

Packers don't have to do anything. Rodgers can either play for GB or retire. I guess he could "play" and just tank or fake an injury.

If all of this is true and the damage is irreparable, then the price for the reigning MVP is 3 first rounders.

I would be pissed if they traded him to San Francisco.

I saw a Twitter post that went along the lines of, well I'll let the tweet do the talking:

Ian Rapoport

@RapSheet

Over the last month, Aaron Rodgers had his agent Dave Dunn fly out to Green Bay for several days of meetings to work through the situation. Rodgers refused a restructure. Wanted an extension. Teams called knowing he wasn’t happy. GB rebuffed them. Offered an extension. No deal.

This seems more believable. Of course still hearsay.

So one of those things has to give. You can't claim 'they don't want me,' then when they offer you an extension to keep you, you can't keep saying 'they don't want me'.

Maybe Rodgers' family had it right.

Rodgers is more than smart enough to understand that the Packers can’t really trade him now due to cap limitations, and organizationally, investing in bringing back so much of the team and then suddenly rebuilding at QB would be unpalatable, to say the least. Basically, he understands his leverage is considerable, but not irresistible.

The question then becomes, what does Rodgers want, and what is Gute/Murphy willing to give him? Does he want to know, once and for all, that he will be able to quit his career in GB on his terms? Does he want more money? Does he want personnel input? All of the above? The only people who know the answer to any of those questions are the ones who aren’t talking. All will become known in time.

if they trade him, i don't care where he would go as long as the packers got a haul back. Part of what was rough about the Favre situation is that they only got a 3rd for him. I understand its a different situation though.

Well said. This is my take on the situation as well.

I honestly don't know how they can trade him and make the financials work.

If it truly is to this point and Rodgers is traded, there will be unrest among Packers fans like we haven’t seen. Heads will roll in the organization starting with Murphy and Gutekunst for letting it get to this point.

I'll take that bet.

Some reports saying that the Packers told Rodgers he was going to be traded this off season - and then backed off that.

Now, did Rodgers ask for such a deal? Or did the Packers volunteer that? Who knows.

I love how there's almost no accountability here. Bill Michels literally sent out a tweet claiming to have offer details of an offer made by SF. It was immediately shot down by multiple outlets, yet he just quietly keeps retweeting stuff this afternoon. Insanity.

It's also kind of funny how all these guys have "sources" confirming this that or the other thing on the same day as Schefter comes out with his news. Why the hell didn't they report that when they originally heard it?

Trade Love, give Rodgers an extension, and draft a receiver in the first round. Do what you need to do to fix this and get Rodgers and the Packers on the same page.

Right? Like if they legit had a source with info, they would have screamed to the highest levels so they'd get all the credit and whatnot if it turned out to be true. They all just sat on a huge piece of news like that all this time, just so they could confirm Schefter? Right....

If the Packers were to trade Aaron Rodgers before June 1 it would actually cost the team MORE in cap space than if he remained on the team.

$37,202,000 to play in Green Bay

$38,356,000 to be traded away
