mark mathias has his contract selected from class aaa nashville. he has two minor league options remaining, but has been outrighted to the minor leagues before.

Mathias is not the most inspiring choice. Personally I would have liked to see what Dahl can do. But I suppose if Taylor is basically going to move into a full-time role, and Cutch is going to see more time in the OF, having another versatile guy on the bench makes some sense.

bear in mind that mathias was already with the club as part of their taxi squad.

and as for him not being an inspiring choice, you may have missed this report.

He seems likely to go down in a few days once Adames is back

I would like Hiura to go down … his defense restricts him to a below average 1B & 2B

Mathias is much more versatile defensively & has an okay bat

I believe Matthias is the better choice to remain in Milwaukee

I would tend to agree that Mathis will be the one to go down when Adames comes back. If they think Adames is recovering and will be back soon it is easy enough to option Mathias instead of a DFA for Dahl.

I want to see Hiura get more ABs, he raised his OPS again yesterday. It's time to see if he has figured out the hitting again for a longer duration. A guy like Mathis makes sense if you anticipate it being a very short roster stay in between injuries.

It is probably even more simple than that: Mathias was hot at AAA, while Dahl was not. Both are nothing more than organizational soldiers. Moreover, the  Brewers are not going to be concerned about DFA'ing Dahl, he's playing for them on his second consecutive minor league deal, he probably can opt out or ask to be released anytime he wants.

IMO, he should be given the opportunity to DH against righties ahead of McCutchen.

mark mathias has been optioned to class aaa nashville, but will remain with the club today as the 27th man.

the brewers, for the time being, will go back to 14 pitchers after the doubleheader.
