Maybe. But even that's questionable. 26th in starting pitching WAR per fangraphs. Compared to the Brewers, who are 4th for starting pitchers and 2nd for all pitchers.

The Cardinals must have some decent pitchers for their runs allowed per game to be basically the same as the Brewers.

Of course, there are things such as underlying metrics like WAR, FIP, xFIP, K/9, etc. where the Brewers have them beat and it's not even close.

I’m old fashioned. Scoring and preventing runs is still the name of the game and the Cardinals are very good at that.

What it indicates is the Brewers' pitching numbers are far more sustainable than the Cardinals'. Even as "old fashioned" stats go, Brewers' team ERA is 3.28 and the Cardinals' is 3.78.

STL is giving up about 0.5 runs more per game than the Brewers. That's not close.

Not true. According to Baseball Reference the Cardinals are allowing 3.86 to the Brewers 3.77. I’m more interested in runs allowed than earned runs allowed. If the Cardinals defense is better at helping their pitchers that’s part of the game too.

Pitchers can often have a role in preventing unearned runs too.

Hopefully he can find something and get through the next two innings relatively unscathed. Did a good job getting Pujols to ground out there. And thankfully, Wainwright is in just as bad of shape currently.

3 walks and almost 60 pitches in 2 innings is a pretty good indication of a pitcher who isn’t in command.

And then this ump gives Wainwright those first two pitches to Taylor, while squeezing Lauer the half inning before....Automated strike zone cannot get here fast enough.

Is this Cain's last stand? He's virtually guaranteed playing time until Renfroe comes back in a week or so. Wonder if he doesn't figure it out by then they will consider DFA'ing him...

At least JBJ is OPSing .611 right now, which gives him a WAR of .5. Can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd take that instead of what Cain is giving us.

He's actually OPSing .455 according to the graphic they showed his first at bat.
