The Mudcats and Fireflies play a doubleheader in Columbia today, as Carolina aims to turn a 2-1 series deficit into a 3-2 series lead. RHP Fernando Olguin (6.10 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 7.8 K/9 in 20 2/3 innings) will start the opening game, making his 6th appearance (5th start) of 2022. SS Eduardo Garcia has hit home runs in 3 of his last 5 games to raise his OPS thus far in June to .903:

Wisconsin has lost 3 games in a row in Great Lakes and turns to RHP James Meeker (3.98 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 8.4 K/9 in 20 1/3 innings) to make his first start in 4 years to try to claw back to 3-2 in this week's series. DH/C Wes Clarke has hit safely in 6 of his last 7 games:

After seeming to have Game One in hand, with a 3-0 lead (homers by Hedbert Perez and Eduardo Garcia) and starter Fernando Olguin cruising, things fell apart in a 5-run bottom of the 4th inning. An error, double and two walks (both of which had 1-2 counts) rattled Olguin, then reliever Pablo Garabitos gave up a 3-run blast.

Never fear, trailing 5-4 and down to their final out in the game, Jeferson Quero returned the favor with a 3-run shot of his own. Then Perez added his second homer of the game. 8-5 Mudcats lead, though they still need to close it out in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Jeez, Carolina needed every single one of those runs, as Columbia scored two in the bottom of the final (7th) inning and had the tying run on base, before RHP Alexander Cornielle induced the final out. 8-7 Mudcat victory in Game One.

It's looking like a good day for the organization results-wise thus far, in spite of the sadness of seeing OF Lorenzo Cain's playing career likely come to an end:

  • Both Dominican clubs won, putting up 17 runs on 22 hits, including 10 extra-base hits
  • Mudcats won first game of doubleheader to tie up series 2-2
  • ACL clubs played a friendly 7-inning contest, with solid starting pitching (combined 8 innings, 1 run, 5 hits, 8 Ks for RHPs Arielbi Gonzalez and Henrison Mota) before the OF Eduarqui Fernandez show: grand slam, double, 6 RBIs, also threw out a runner at home. The game included stateside debuts for INF Miguel Briceno, C Darlin Lora and RHP Michael Perdomo (who earned the win), as well as INF/OF Kaylan Nicasia's (16th round draft pick last year) first home run as a Brewer
  • MLB Brewers leading 7-3 late

The Shuckers have won 3 games in a row in Chattanooga and will have RHP TJ Shook (3.72 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 10.5 K/9 in 55 2/3 innings of High-A / AA ball) on the mound to try to take an insurmountable 4-1 series lead. SS Cam Devanney has an 11-game hitting streak and 17-game on-base streak:

Biloxi with a fun first inning so far Dillard, Severino and Frelick with singles Weimer with a HR and Valerio with a triple and still only 1 out with 4 runs in.

Carolina came out on top in game 1 of their double header with quite the 9th inning finish and a 3 hit game for Chourio.

Lutz and Devanney have added singles in Biloxi while I was typing.

Well after forcing Abbot from the game still in the first inning, Severino greets the new pitcher with the 9th hit of the inning to complete the hanging a snowman in the first inning.

Nashville has RHP Brandon Woodfuff on the mound for a rehab start as it strives to take a 3-2 series lead in Memphis. LF Garrett Whitley steps into the lead-off spot to fill Jonathan Davis' big shoes:

The Carolina Mudcats and Columbia Fireflies are underway in the second game of their doubleheader, with RHP Miguel Segura (4.71 ERA, 1.71 WHIP, 7.7 K/9 in 42 innings) getting the start. CF Jackson Chourio notched his season OPS back up to 1.009 with a 3-for-4 effort in today's opener:

1 - Eduardo Garcia - DH
2 - Jackson Chourio - CF
3 - Jean Carmona - SS
4 - Hedbert Perez - LF
5 - Hendry Mendez - RF
6 - Zach Raabe - 2B
7 - Jheremy Vargas - 3B
8 - Jose Sibrian - C
9 - Luis Silva - 1B
X - Miguel Segura - P

RHP James Meeker gave up a 2-run homer to the Loons' Jonny DeLuca (15th of the season) on an 0-2 pitch in the second inning, but Wisconsin responded with 3 runs on 3 hits in the 3rd inning, the key being SS Ethan Murray's bases clearing double.

Eduardo Garcia doubled, then Jackson Chourio hit his 7th dinger of 2022 to give Carolina a 2-0 third inning lead in the second game of their doubleheader.

Meanwhile, spot starter James Meeker is up to 57 pitches through 3 innings, so I assume Manager Ayrault will call in relief. Wisconsin leads 3-2.

Assuming Woodruff was removed because he hit his limit of 50 pitches. Finishes with a line of 2 2/3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1BB, 7 SO. The K's in particular are nice to see. Probably one more start in Appleton to get his pitch count to around 75-80. Anyone watching to see how the breaking balls looked?

Turang playing CF interesting

It is. He's been there from time to time this season, maybe it'll happen a bit more often as 1) the organization is more than convinced of his ability to play SS & the position is pretty well covered by others at Nashville and 2) I don't see Frelick or Weimer being promoted anytime soon.

Noah Campbell on base all four plate appearances after taking over for Lutz.  He now has a higher OPS than Weimer.

For those in the know, is Campbell playing LF because he's not good enough defensively to play in the infield, or is it because the team is higher on other infield prospects and LF is the only place to get him in the lineup?

I believe he's actually more of an infielder (second baseman), with a decent-enough glove, but he shifted principally to the outfield at Low-A Carolina in late June 2021, since but he wasn't going to supplant the likes of Valerio, Zamora, Holt, Warren and McGee in that infield.

This year, most of us expected him to play at High-A Wisconsin, but they pushed him up to AA Biloxi as extra outfield depth to start the season behind Wiemer, Mitchell and Lutz, since they chose to release Lujano and Castillo, while Ward is injured. His offensive production this year has taken off from June 2nd (.609 OPS before June 2; 1.400 OPS since June 2).
