DSL Brewers-1 vs. DSL Brewers-2 was a nice 7-inning battle, with Brewers-1 taking 1-0 and 3-1 leads, but Brewers-2 responding each time.

First homers of their careers for Irving Igualas (1.050 OPS) and Francisco Nina (.852 OPS), while Luis Lara (.992 OPS) also tripled and reached base 3 times. All three are outfielders.

The Low-A Mudcats have lost 3 games at Down East in a row, so need a win tonight with RHP Jefferson Figueroa (6.39 ERA, 1.62 ERA, 9.9 K/9 in 25 1/3 innings) on the mound to stem the tide. CF Jackson Chourio continues to lead the offense with his 1.001 OPS (190 plate appearances):

AA Biloxi strives for a 3-1 series lead at home against Pensacola, with RHP TJ Shook (4.82 ERA in AA; 2.41 ERA in High-A) making his 7th start since being promoted. LF Noah Campbell is having a tremendous month (1.187 OPS in 65 June plate appearances):

AAA Nashville has RHP Dylan File (4.50 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 7.2 K/9 in 60 innings) on the mound tonight as it seeks to even up their series at home against Gwinnett at 2-2. CF Corey Ray has homered in 2 of his last 3 games:

I heart Cam Robinson. What a first half of his season. He went another 1 2/3 scoreless innings tonight with 3 k’s  for his 16th Save.

Kent Hasler gave us a reminder he is still a fantastic pitcher when he’s on with his best two innings of work in a hot minute helping Biloxi take another from Pensacola 5-4.

This is not the series Carolina was looking for. They lose another to the Wood Ducks - 6-0. Rough stretch for the young men. Jackson Chourio with the 0-for-4 three strikeout line.

Dylan File worked around 10 hits in his six innings of work. He managed to limit the damage to three runs. It’s 8-3 in the ninth as Connor Sadzeck looks to close this out - we had scoreless innings of work from Lucas Erceg and Matt HardyCorey Ray has come off the IL with a vengeance we haven’t seen to date in 2022. 4-for-4 tonight with 2 dubs and 3 RBI’s. Let’s go, Corey!

Corey Ray was 4 for 4 on Friday. Can we hope he recently made a deal with the devil?

On a related note, Singleton was 2-4, but his average sits at  .170.  I get that it was a good idea to sign him, but when will it be time to cut bait.

ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE

Final: ACL Rockies 7, ACL Brewers Blue 3
Box Score / Game Log

Another day, another loss, unfortunately for the Brewers in Blue, dropping their record to 3-11.

20-year old OF Eduarqui Fernandez provided the main highlight, smacking his second homer of the year to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the second inning. His season slash is now .277 / .306 / .532. Just as important, he didn’t strike out in this game.

21-year old switch-hitting LF Reidy Mercado hadn’t played for 13 days, but was impressive in his half-game action: 2-for-2 with an infield single and a double. Let’s hope his fifth inning exit in favor of Luis Medina was pre-planned as part of a gradual return from injury.

20-year old starting RHP Andy Garcia gave up four runs in five innings, but his peripherals were decent: four hits, two walks, six Ks. Let’s focus on the positives. Meanwhile, 19-year old Arielbi Gonzalez was hit harder than usual (five hits in two innings of work), but struck out four Rockies.

It was 105 degrees at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

Final: ACL Royals 7, ACL Brewers Gold 6
Box Score / Game Log

All the runs came early in this one, as a 7-6 fifth inning scoreline held up for the remainder of the contest, unfortunately with the Gold men on the wrong end of it, dropping their record to 8-5.

20-year old RHP Phili Silverio pitched three encouraging scoreless innings, striking out six while yielding only a harmless single and walk. Taking the cue from Silverio, 20-year old RHP Fray Morelo and 19-year old LHP Fraudy Maldonado combined on another three scoreless innings, striking out three and probably making the manager wish he'd gone to the bullpen earlier.

Starting 19-year old RHP Patricio Aquino wasn’t able to build on a terrific prior outing, giving up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits (four of the extra-base variety) in three innings of work, though did manage to punch out six batters.

The Gold team will rue the missed chances, leaving the tying run on 3rd base in the 5th inning, 2nd base in the 6th inning and then ending the game at 3rd base on a base running blunder (registered as a caught stealing: pitcher to third baseman). The team went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position, though the opposition wasn’t much better at 2-for-12.

20-year old 3B Carlos Roa hasn’t been getting regular playing time (last hit was June 6th), but reminded us that “everyone’s a prospect or they wouldn’t be here” by going 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk and no strikeouts.

Impressive 18-year old RF Luis Castillo (1.202 season OPS) also reached base three times, going 1-for-3 with a double and two walks.

SS Jose Caballero (.997 season OPS), 2B Jadher Areinamo (.792 season OPS) and LF Eduarh Colina each reached base twice via a single and walk.

18-year old DH/INF Gregory Barrios had reached base five times on Thursday, but went 0-for-5 today. Yet he still managed an RBI and only struck out once. Again, look at the positives!

105 degrees at American Family Fields of Phoenix in this 3-hour, 42-minute tight contest.

It’s Blue vs. Gold in an early Saturday game today. Go Brewers!

Have a game, Thomas Dillard: 2-for-3 with a double and 2 walks, producing the last 4 RBIs of the contest, including a walk-off walk to help Biloxi defeat Pensacola 5-4. Great bullpen work (Hasler, Hitt, Walters) to blank the Blue Wahoos over the final 4 innings (6 innings if we include the last of starter TJ Shook's effort).

I have a feeling that the Brewers don't think much of Noah Campbell's infield defense, at least at 3B.  The fact that Yeison Coca is starting over him at 3B while Campbell is pushing a .900 OPS is not a good sign.

OPS is still above 0.700. He has walks/walked a ton, always has power, and plays a fantastic 1B. I think he's here for the season, personally. What has happened is a prolonged slump since the away Jacksonville series. He was batting back to 0.224 at that point? Regardless, it will be interesting to see what happens in the second-half of the year. I think the Brewers see him as solid insurance should anything go wrong - batting average aside. Plus, he's absolutely loved by his teammates.

The issue at large, if we're being honest, is there simply aren't a lot of 1B options in the system. Perhaps, the young man having the most promising year at 1B (in terms of upside and development) has been shelved with injury for over a month - Ernesto MartinezTyler White has gotten hot again here in the short-term and profiles as your classic bench 1B/DH if the need arises. Thomas Dillard is a likable guy and another walk machine - he essentially protoypes as a strictly Vogelbach-type of player in that he's shorter, stalkier etc. and will never give you plus defense though he is fine within his limitations. He leads the Southern League in walks and has gotten mildly hot at the plate recently - another 1B prospect who has hovered around 0.200 for most of the season with a similarly plus-0.700 OPS. Wes Clarke has filled in admirably over the course of the season and is turning into an interesting C/DH/1B option in the system. He's been a joy to watch though he is clearly limited athletically. However, he's just a very solid baseball player with, perhaps, the most supportive nuclear family fan-base I've ever seen.

All-in-all, though, we don't appear to have a stud in the wings. Perhaps, the club treats that situation like the Packers treated ILB for over a decade? I don't know. I like all these guys, however, and have to believe the Brewers see enough supportive qualities in the collective to fill-in if for some reason injuries really ran rampant.

One would have to agree with you there.

Campbell has literally almost strictly been an OF all season for Biloxi - he's played more games at 1B and DH than at 3B if memory serves. It would appear we can't be too invested in the previous 'INF' designation as it seems the Brewers now view him as a corner OF propsect. Before he was injured, and since, he played/is playing primarily LF all season. Since his injury, they have rotated him some throughout the OF during the games as shifts arise - albeit, minimally. Before Coca was promoted, it Was the Cam Devanney break-out as he has stepped in from Day 1 and played phenomenal defense and has spot-filled 13 or so games at the Hot Corner. Now, they pretty much only spot-play Cam anywhere outside of SS. The 3B 'conundrum' was more driven by Ashton McGee'early injury and consequent struggles as he was the opening-day 3B. Frankly, he was having a fantastic game and, well, it all went downhill from there. He continues to try and make something out of a rough rough start to 2022 and has had a few moment.

Was he ever really a third baseman, though? He was a second baseman/left fielder in college. I imagine the reason he played there is the same reason Gabe Holt saw a chunk of time at third last year as well: The Brewers have had, the last couple of years, a ton of guys whose best infield defensive position is second base and very few whose best infield defensive position is third base so guys were playing out of position to get them at bats.
