If the Brewers don't win the division I should be banned. However, they will.

I don't think the Padres plan was ever to catch the Dodgers.  It was (most likely) to lock up enough talent to secure a WC spot and have a more competitive post season team.

I totally get that but comparing them to the Dodgers shows how little their trades have helped. And it's an interesting comparison given that the Dodgers did almost nothing at the deadline and have gained 8 games.

The Padres could sneak into the playoffs and win the WS so it is by no means a disaster at this point. But it's not looking good 1.5 months post deadline..

After the game today this is what their big acquisitions have accomplished

Soto - 32 G, 3 HR, 6 RBI and slashing .218/.381/.345 for a .726 OPS

Hader - 11 G, 8.2 IP, 13.50 ERA, 2.42 WHIP

Bell - 35 G, 3 HR, 11 RBI and slashing .205/.322/.307 for a .629 OPS

Drury - 27 G, 5 HR, 15 RBI and slashing .220/.262/.410 for a .672 OPS

The 4 have combined for 0 fWAR and -0.3 bWAR. Their record since August 3rd is 17-18. The only reason they are still in a playoff position is because we are 18-20 over the same span. Preller has a pretty extensive history of buying the shiny object even if the cost is extreme. He also loves buying players when their value is the highest (Bell and Drury were both playing well above their career norms at the deadline)

They’ll never do it, but I would call up Robert Gasser and let him start in Alexander’s place next start. That would be the ultimate gut punch to San Diego if he pitched well and contributed to the crew overtaking them in the standings.

Just proof that you can be big buyers at the deadline...and it doesn't work out.

Even the Brewers the past couple years have dealt with this. Scope, Escobar come to mind once we acquired them. And some bullpen guys like Norris. This years pen guys have underperformed since getting them as well. Bush and Rogers.

Of course for the Cardinals their acquisitions worked out great....

Would be sweet to beat the Pads for that last spot. This team has to get hot in a hurry though.

Valid point, but to be fair, Escobar was better for the Brewers than he was before hand.
