In my memory, Sabathia pitched a complete game shutout and hit a so home run to provide the only offense in a 1-0 victory like 5 times. I suppose it was probably only once or twice in reality...still. that dude.

Seriously man, cool off a bit. There's no reason to dismiss that comment.

Because that's literally the way I understand "control your own destiny", too.

Brock. You know as well as I the history there. I'm not inflaming things further. I'm just recognizing the fact that the conversation is unlikely to go anywhere productive and trying to put an end to it. We obviously have different interpretations of control your own destiny. I take it to also mean you don't have any deficit to make up, which the Brewers don't right now by virtue of the extra game and the tiebreaker. That poster is entitled to their interpretation and I'm entitled to mine.

Maybe focus more on all of the literal trolling/garbage that goes on here and the name-calling....The # of users (and your bottom line) may be fine, but the quality of discussion is in serious decline...Seriously, man.

That's my understanding of control your own destiny as well

If that's the case, then "control your own destiny" shouldn't really be used in baseball. Unless you're the Braves or there's like 15 games left in the season...

Plus, under either interpretation, the Brewers still literally control their own destiny.

Anyways, I feel like there's more meaningful and productive conversations to be had here...

That’s it.

in my experience the phrase isn’t used in baseball (or really any sport) until later in the season when winning out is realistically possible.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I think I've seen it most when a team is trailing but they have games against teams above them with not many games left, in other words "they're behind, but they control their own destiny"

Love a great discussion on vernacular

Or in a tiebreaker situation.

I think it’s most common in the NFL where the tiebreaker procedures can be so convoluted. A team could be behind one team in the standings and out of the playoffs in one of those “If the season ended today” presentations. But, if the trailing team has a game remaining against a team with a better record, and would hold the tiebreaker over them, they could still “control their own destiny”.

We could hear it this year with the Brewers and Reds or other teams, but probably not until much later in the season, like the final week.

Also, the Brewers xBA last night was .263, the night before .309. Both times comfortably ahead of Washington (xBA of .166 yesterday). That Peralta inning with three runs was ridiculously unlucky on his part with the contact made

The hits have been cheap, but Peralta is digging himself into a hole with walks and piling up,the pitches to ensure a short start.

The offense has a big hole to climb out of now.

I couldn't watch the game last night but Freddie nibbles too much at times.  I'm just glad they won.

Crazy how many innings seem to come down to Monteserio delivering or not.

I really like this guy.  He at least puts the ball in play.  You don't have to swing for the fences every time.

But to be fair, I admit I don't have the hatred for the Cubs that many of you do. I'm weird that way. I ******* hate the Cards but the Cubs are "eh, okay". I think it probably has to do with me spending quite a bit of time in Utah - a baseball dead zone, particularly in the early 90s - and the Cubs were literally the only team I could watch on the regular. I grew up watching a lot of Sandberg, Dawson, Grace, Dunston, etc.

I don't cheer for the Cubs but I don't wish death on them, either. They're just kinda... there.

I'm with ya there.  The Cards are #1 on my hate list.  Cub fans drive me crazy but the Cards have been a pain since our AL days.

Just go to a Cubs-Brewers game at AFF and you might change your mind. Be sure to sit directly in front of Cubs fans.
