OK, going off on a tangent here.  Today, I was reading the current edition of Track and Field News.  The next issue the NCAA may face in court is NCAA athletes in Olympic sports allowed to play in professional tournaments and allowed to keep prize money.  For example, tennis and track.

That would be pretty much their only avenue to make money, since they're non-revenue sports & NIL would be non-existent or close to it. Might as well challenge. The NCAAs' record in these cases makes the '62 Mets look like the 1927 Yankees.

I wonder how this will change high school recruiting in the long run. Blue Bloods and other elite teams have always been deep, but now (at least ones with money) are going to become absolute monsters in the transfer game. Will high school kids keep wanting to go to those schools when they are deep and have a ridiculous amount of transfer talent coming in yearly?

I mean why not just go bully mid majors or even get big time minutes at a P5 school...then hit up the transfer portal for big money? I can't imagine these elite schools are offering massive money to all these prospects when they could just go grab a guy with proven production against college talent.

This reflects my view as well. If I’m a coach like Greg Gard that is not a big player in the transfer game, I’m getting into the ear of top high school kids and telling them what happens when you choose a blue blood team. You will likely sit on the bench for a year and then watch them recruit over you in the portal the next offseason a la Jaden Schutt at Dook this year

A high school girl from here got an offer of cash + entries to golf tournaments all over the world.  She is 15.  She now has to decide if she wants to play High School golf or start accepting money towards her ultimate goal of being a professional golfer.  Just a small tangent here from the WIAA turning down the NIL vote.

Outside of the possible snafu due to dealing with minors, I don't see how the result of that vote can't be successfully challenged. Hope the young ladys' parents have their heads screwed on straight--this reminds me a little of child actors in the 1950s-60s. Having a talented youngster can be quite a blessing but can go sideways in a hurry w/o planning & proper guidance. Good luck to her.

But I still can't stop beating the dead horse: Entering & playing in golf tournaments has zero to do with what NIL was originally purported to do.

Seventeen-yr-old kids----at least the top 50-75 HS players----I think will still go to the big name schools. Playing elsewhere as you alluded to makes sense for them if the current structure continues, but it's hard to find a top 50 HS kid that doesn't think he can immediately garner PT anywhere, regardless of competition. A five-star kid from Cleveland might be wise to spend a year at Wright State, but he won't think he 'needs' to. And if his destination doesn't work out there will always be another P-5 that just lost six players.

I suspect there will still be decent money offered to the elite HS kids. Kon Kneuppel is most likely getting 6 figures from Duke.

For anyone interested, Gus Yalden has committed to Seton Hall. Like a lot of other schools they've had about half a dozen guys leave, so I guess there's an opportunity there. Of course where he goes isn't as important as getting his **** together.

The WIAA Board of Ccontrol voted down 210-170 a proposal to have NIL for high school athletes.  I would be 100% against this.  Not surprised by the result, just shocked 170 voted in favor of it.  Was the thought process to stay ahead of the courts?

That would be my guess, as I think the only thing the WIAA would hate more than NIL, is being dragged into court due to NIL. It'll be interesting to see how vigorously someone will challenge it. Hoping that at the HS level it'll be primarily a case of a unique talent at an individual sport, like Stoutdudes' reference to the golfer.

Nice addition for the Badgers today.

No official verification that I can find, but there's a lot of smoke billowing around that they secured three commitments this weekend. The other two (if true) would be John Tonje, a 6'5" 220LB wing forward from Colorado State & Xavier Amos, a 6'8" forward from Northern Illinois that Virginia was going after, not a banger but a shot blocker and a 38% shooter from 3. Tonje has shown the ability to score from the perimeter & inside at the MWC level.

They would probably still look for a 4th guy & supposedly are in the conversation for Jaden Schutt from Duke.

Parents are good people - I taught the girl in 3rd grade and played ball with the dad.

I think you nailed it with what NIL is supposed to do and what it's become.

There’s Amos. Another important addition. Tonje is visiting this week per reports.

All three of the targets on my speculative post above have now been officially added as Tonje committed this morning.

It'll be an interesting exercise to try to comp the three added to Storr, Hepburn & Wahl. Lots of similarities btwn Hunter & Hepburn that I can see. A big jump in athleticism, perimeter shooting & rim protection w/Amos over Wahl, but Tyler was a strong if not flashy presence when healthy. We'll have to see if Amos can hold up physically in the lane in the B10.

Tonje can shoot it a little, & both he & Hunter show a propensity to take the ball to the hoop w/some authority. Both are more than physical enough.

Gard is toying with adding 1 more, if he does it'll probably be a big man that's either a project or someone willing to play backup minutes a la Chris Vogt.

Here’s the official X. Really like what UW was able to do with these additions

UW is looking at Noah Boyed, a 7-footer from St Lucia in the Carribean. He played the last two seasons at a JC in Nebraska.

The speculation from some circles is that he may choose Kentucky, as he previously committed to Baylor & the assistant that was involved in his recruitment there is the guy that replaced Calipari at KU. But Gard has gotten him to visit UW, so maybe a chance?

Around 11 PPG in JC with 8 RPG, but no doubt he had a big size advantage at that level..

Picked up my local newspaper at the end of my driveway today- yeah I’m old school- opened to the sports page and read the lead article which was about coach Brian Kelly encouraging LSU fans to contribute to NIL. He pledged to personally match fan donations to the amount of $1 Million. That seems crazy but a sign of the times we live in with college athletics I guess

Well, at least he recognizes that he is overpaid and needs players to win.

True. Things haven’t gone all that well for Brian Kelly down the bayou for sure.

Or most places he has been?

Give the guy a break. It's over 14 years since he killed anybody. How many of us can say the same?

True.  I can't say that...
