This isn't fooling anyone, he isn't retiring by choice, MLB finally got the guts to get rid of him.  I'm guessing they said either retire with a great severance package and save face, or you will be terminated.  Way too late, but at least he's freaking gone.

He's not really retiring "immediately".  He hasn't worked a game since May 9th, and he and MLB have been negotiating a severance payout since.

I think I saw he also missed most of last year due to an injury.  Obviously I have no inside info and didn't do any digging.  But wouldn't surprise me if that was also pushed on him and all this has been an ongoing negotiation for a while.

Honestly, I don't mind umpires missing calls if they're using the data available to get better. Hernandez never seemed interested in that.

If I am the umpires union, I am pushing my members to embrace the electronic zone technology to improve their own performance. That's how you keep control because the tech isn't going away.

Technology doesn't always make things "better". Technology can easily be corrupted/manipulated. When umpires screw up as often, and as bad as Hernandez did, MLB just needs to discipline them severely. Hernandez should have been fired years ago.

I wonder who the next social media whipping boy will serve to satisfy the public's need for blood whenever umps make a bad call?

FTR, Angel Hernandez seemed like a "bad" umpire to me, too.

If you know their name they should be one of the nominees.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.
