Undoubtedly, and I imagine someone like Barrios who combines a similar swinging strike rate with fewer walks and strikeouts has better pure contact numbers.

The patient approach has worked for him thus far, though, and the strikeout rate is reasonable given the number of called strikes he probably takes, especially with the variability of umpiring at that level. As an added benefit, I believe he sees more pitches per at bat than any other player in the Midwest League.

Would not at all surprise me if Adams and O'Rae were 1-2 on pitches seen per PA in the Midwest League. I think 33% swing rate is way too low though. I think that's probably crossing the line when it comes to the passive/patient conversation, but Adams is only 20 years old and has plenty of time to find that balance as he moves up through the system. He's cleaned up his swing quite a bit from this point a year ago, so I have a lot of hope we will continue to work things out and put up results in the minors.

I will play devils advocate here.

He knows the strike zone well. A ball pitchers are not great at pounding zone, and waiting for the mistake is a good thing for a 20 year old. Now if he doesn't change as he moves up that's a problem, but if he keeps his ability to know the zone and swing more as the pitchers are better in AA/AAA, then he can continue his success at the plate. He has the power to punish pitches in the zone. So we will see.

It’s possible to be successful at that number. Bobby Abreu lived there and Matt Carpenter visited occasionally. I agree the swing rate probably should come up a bit, though, and I expect it to as he moves up the ladder. It doesn’t have to increase much, though. Plenty of guys are successful in the 40% range.

I didn’t count the number on O’Rae, but eye-balling it I would guess he is somewhere between 10-20. His pitches/plate appearance isn’t as big of an outlier as Adams.
