Well some of us were worried that we hadn’t seen Hayden Robinson our 14th round pick from last season who was off to such a promising start in the ACL pitch since early June and it turns out he needs Tommy John. What a disappointing development for the young man.

Has this year been cursed?

I mean how many starting pitchers are going down - the big league level has been decimated; but still multiple injuries in the affiliated ball levels, including non-pitchers, but Robinson, Birchard, Shears, Waggoner among the MiLB arms. No this?

Our season was cursed day one with Quero's injury on AAA opening day. Ugh.

I don't think this year has been cursed at all. Injuries happen, especially to pitchers and catchers. It's unfortunate, but all part of the calculus.

DSL squad(s) have been insane to start the year, Carolina is in first place with the youngest pitching staff in the league and a bunch of legit prospects, Wisco is in first place with the 2nd youngest hitters and 3rd youngest pitchers in the league.

The system as a whole is possibly as deep as it has ever been (even with all the injuries), hard for me to call that any kind of curse.

I agree wholeheartedly. Injuries are just an unfortunate and significant part of the physics of the game. It stinks when they happen in bunches like this year but it's a real testament to the great depth of the system at large (and the personnel department) that the season has carried on in the fashion it has. I personally have been pleasantly surprised throughout the first half seeing many a marquis name having a ho-hum season (so to speak) while players on the fringes of discussions coming into the year really are balling out. The system depth is just such a gift for the everyday watchers and followers. It stands out. Just consider, for example, the outputs of guys like Isaac CollinsYoshwar GarciaManuel Rodriguez, Daniel Corniel, Chad Patrick, Jesus Chirinos and his big hits and big moments, Brewer Hicklen, Jadher AreinamoCraig Yoho and on and on and on. The injuries happen. They absolutely stink no doubt about it. BUT, in a season like this, we really see the wealth of depth the Brewers system contains well past the overdone Top 20 and Top 30 lists. There are really good players throughout the stateside 165 count. Their performances as a whole have helped the machine stay well-oiled, so to speak.

That looks like a return-from-injury for Colmenarez, who had respectable numbers last year as a 17-year old.

Tovar exited late; hopefully he’s not injured.

Kevin Garcia’s 3 homers are looking less impressive next to his .154 batting average. But then again, he’s still just 16 years old.

Ismael Yanez had a rough start to the first going HBP, HBP, bunt single, ground rule double to score two AZ Reds.

But he bounced back alright going line out. strikeout. strikeout to strand the runners on 2nd and 3rd and end the inning without further damage.

Zona Crew half of the first has gone..

Josh Adamczewski HBP
(only seems fair)
stolen bag
to third on an Eric Bitonti ground out
Luiyin Alastre ROE scores Josh
balk
Gery Holguin walk
Pedro Ibarguen ROE loads em up
Edgardo Ordonez 4-6-3

Score is 2-1 AZ Reds and Yanez has opened the second with a walk and wild pitch (for those playing ACL bingo at home)

Yanez walked the second batter of the second frame too and was relieved by Isaiah Jackson, who promptly struck out his first batter faced.

He then went walk, run scoring sharply hit ground out, walk, fly out to get out of the inning.

Now 3-1 AZ Reds with the 7-8-9 hitters due up for the Zona Crew bottom two - Antony Gomez, Yannic Walther and Tyler Rodriguez.

Jackson got done somewhat dirty in the third.

Three ground balls to start the inning should have been all it took, but a pair of Luiyin Alastre errors opened the door for a wild pitch and single that scored another two AZ Reds.

An Eric Bitonti walk and Gery Holguin single have a couple on for the Zona Crew with one down bottom of three trailing 5-1.

Flores went 1-2-3 in both the fifth and sixth innings picking up another strikeout along the way.

Zona Crew still trailing 5-3 heading to top of seven.

To be published in tomorrow am's Minor League Report:

Final: DSL Brewers #2 2, DSL Brewers #1 1
Box Score and Game Log

The DSL Uno y Dos squared up as foes once again to start the early week of Brewers affiliated baseball. And, the two young squads ultimately played a scheduled seven-inning 2-1 nail biter as the DLS Brewers Dos got the best of their brethren across the diamond. Ultimately, the two runs the Brewers #2 plated during 17-year-old RHP Ayendy Bravo's 3 1/3 IP proved to the difference. One might surmise Bravo was lucky to only concede two runs: 5 H, 2 BB, 3 WP, 1 K. His stablemates, RHP Gabriel Colmenarez (who returns from injury - now 18 years of age and in his first action since a respectable 2023) and RHP Ramwell Smith pitched a combined 3 2/3 scoreless frames with two punch outs apiece and very little activity on the base paths. In a game where the Brewers #1 offense managed only two hits in total we can give a nod to a familiar name in the box score: INF Luis Pena knocked his third double of his 2024 season. On the side of the Brewers Dos, we see last year's pre-season DSL darling INF Kevin Ereu caused quite a few problems at the dish and on the base paths - he smacked his fourth double of his season in a 2-for-4, 1 R day and advanced twice on Bravo WP's. Ereu is now hitting a very respectable 0.293 with an 0.852 OPS in 41 official AB. INF Jonathan Rangel had a fine 2-for-2, 1 RBI, 1 BB day himself while also hitting his third two-bagger of his summer. German RHP Paul Hoff picked up the win going 5.0 IP of 2 H, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 ER ball. His stablemate, 18-year-old Dominican RHP Johan Zapata, picked up the two inning hitless; walk-less; scoreless; 1 strikeout Save - the first of his 2024 season in his first opportunity. In 6 1/3 IP as a DSL Brewers #2 reliever, Zapata now holds a 4.26 ERA with 5 K to 1 BB. The DSL Brewers Dos move to 8-7 on their season. The DSL Brewers Uno fall to 10-6. Both squads will be back at it tomorrow morning facing very formidable foes in the DSL Orioles Orange and DSL Cleveland Goryl who own a combined 25-7 record 😳

Luiyin Alastre has hit the error trifecta tonight - one each fielding. throwing and missing a catch on a ball thrown to him.

AZ Crew now trail 6-3 heading to bottom of seven with Tyler Rodriguez, Josh Adamczewski and Eric Bitonti due up.

Posted

Nova gives up a single and stolen bag out of the gate but escapes unscathed going ground out, strikeout. line out to strand the runner on third base.

Posted

Dencer Geraldo on in the 9th and strikes out the first guy.

A walk, wild pitch, stolen base and second strikeout had him one out away from Zero Club status.

And he got the ground ball to first baseman Gery Holguin but apparently could not corral the throw for out number three allowing the seventh AZ Reds run to score.

(Anecdotally, it was also a Holguin throw that Luiyin Alastre couldn’t corral earlier, which naturally begs the question…Can Gery Holguin Pitch?)

From there it went wild pitch, HBP, walk to load the bases but Geraldo got out of it with a pop out.

Three more outs and one last chance for the Zona Crew bats.

Posted

Antony Gomez double, Josh Adamczewski single and Eric Bitonti’s second double of the game plated another run for the Zona Crew bottom of nine, but that was as far as the rally got making it a 7-4 loss.
