My impressions:

  1. I didn't know Murphy was retiring
  2. Looks like Policy was instrumental in Titletown development around Lambeau
  3. Muphy gets a lot of grief (perhaps for good reason) with the Rodgers communication stuff that blew up, but otherwise has done well running the organization.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Murphy is forced to retire on his 70th birthday per board of directors rules. Ed's father Carmen was the 49ers president back in the 90's.

That's immediately what I thought. You can't have the name Policy and not be involved with the NFL in some capacity. If he's half as good as his father was, we're in great shape.

He has put it in time. 12 years in the organization and past commissioner of the arena football league.  Murphy is leaving with things on really good shape and setting him up for success. There was no reason to hire from the outside with things being so good.

I looked at my Shareholder packet and noticed a Green Bay News Anchor is being nominated to be a director.  Any idea why he is being nominated?

I probably should read those...

Murphy did a great job at securing the Packers on the business side, the draft, maybe the SB, Titletown District.

I didn't like how he became more involved in the personnel decisions and the coordinator decisions. I'd like to go back to the Harlan way of handling the team. Gute has earned that. Give him complete autonomy.

It's not really worth going into, but I have to wonder if Fashanu is a Packer right now if not for Murphy talking about how much we wanted to trade Rodgers, but on balance, his regime was successful.

As for the retirement announcement, I thought there was an age at which they stepped down? I just remember it being announced this time last year that he'd be out in 2025.

Packers are in a great place...whatever issues you may have with him. So...hard to really complain too much.

Yep, age 70 is the mandatory retirement age for Packers' Presidents/CEOs. I've been putting that out there for a few years now whenever people talk about wanting Murphy fired or just wanting him gone in general that the wait wouldn't be long either way.

I do think he's been a good caretaker of the team overall. Like you I'm not a big fan of giving himself "more power" on the football side of things but let's be honest, he already had the power anyway. He just made it a bit more official. I think there are pros to go along with the cons to that. He continues to leave football decisions to the football people and if he just wants to be looped in and be more of an informed overseer on that end ultimately it's fine. I do think that head coaching hiring & firing decisions should be handled by the GM though. Honestly, until we see a head coach fired or replaced we're not going to know if this is a real hinderance of the power structure or not.

Only time I had a true issue with Murphy was when he continued to back Ted Thompson even when it had become obvious Ted had fallen off in the quality of his team building decisions. Ted's ongoing avoidance of the media was also a big issue for me, to me the guy had been given too much free reign with no public accountability. Once that problem got fixed I felt Murphy did fine. Was he my favorite guy? No, but the Packers are a thriving franchise and their financial future feels really solid. Overall job well done.
